Hey everyone, welcome to another video from Rich King Coaching!
Today, we're diving into a crucial skill for squash players: getting the balls out of the back corners of the court. This is especially valuable for intermediate players aiming to compete at the club level, but it's a necessity for every squash player looking to regain control of the T after their opponent hits a deep shot.
In this video, we'll focus on the straight length or straight drive, covering essential tips and movement patterns to help you succeed. Let's break it down step by step:
- Begin in a good T position with your feet hip-width apart.
- Push off your right foot, turning your hips and shoulders towards the back corner. This helps you move smoothly and adjust your tempo.
- Keep your racket up, lunge low with stability, and ensure your racket head is high while moving towards the ball.
- If space is tight, use a two-footed squat to get under the ball and come out effectively.
- Maintain an open racket face to get underneath the ball and achieve lift.
- As the ball bounces off the back wall, get low with your legs to align your body for a successful shot.
- Wait for the ball to come away from the wall before hitting. Finish your swing and follow through completely before moving back to the T.
Key Tips
- Trust Your Timing: Understand that you have more time than you think in the back corners.
- Focus on Lift, Not Power: Prioritize getting the ball past your opponent with height and width.
- Stability is Key: Maintain a stable lunge and complete your swing before moving out of the shot.

Nice tips..do you find shortening the grip helps to get the really tight low balls as well? I see some players shift their grip further up as they’re running toward the rear backhand side.

Thanks for your message and yes I mentioned on one video that a shortening of the grip can be beneficial on both sides particularly in back corners where space is limited. It will also transfer more feeling into the fingers and add a bit more balance in the racket head you have limited swing space and predominantly using your wrist. Hope that helps and best of luck with your training 👍🏼
