What's up my brother Broke.... We were talking about Milky Spores a few weeks ago. I didn't want to make the video too long or too nerdy but this is the same bacteria used in Milky Spores. As the bacteria is ingested by the caterpillar it causes it to stop feeding and die. Once dead the spores are released. Absent the UV rays from the sun it too would continue to reproduce each time it comes in contact with the caterpillar. The Milky Spores continue its life cycle because it is in the ground. We shouldn't have to reapply. The things I missed in school....

I did this method last season. I also took marigolds, steeped them in hot water like a tea, let it cool and sprayed my plants with it to help mask the smell of the squash plants. It works, but the spray must be applied every few days. I got annoyed with having to do that lol so this year, I kept my squash in my greenhouse.
@growingoutthebox2 жыл бұрын
You would be correct. Squash require more attention than most any other plant. Pruning and growing vertical make a great difference but for me the game changer is the injections. Masking with marigolds is a good idea also. Thats "Growing Out The Box". 💪

"The Black Box" - how ominous, I love it! I've been doing Bt treatments for the last few years, and that is the #1 thing that has allowed me to grow any squash at all. But this is the first time I've heard about the benefits of turmeric and cinnamon - I'll be adding that to my own "black box" of squash plant treatment techniques. Some great details compared to the other videos I have seen. I too have given up on growing Zucchini because just as it starts to bear fruit the plant dies. I tried the BT injection that did not work but I think you have added details that lead to a greater chance of success. I am trying to grow a variety that does not need the flowers to be fertilized so I can cover my plants with netting to keep the bugs off of them. But I still will try to do as you suggested. This is the first I have seen from you and I will agree with others that it is among the best. Very detailed, showing examples but not drawing it out to a long video. Just the facts. Good info to have in the toolbox if needed. Luckily, we've never had an issue with vine borers. Now, if you have some organic magic to deter/kill Japanese Beetles, 1, your fortunate. 2, we could put that to good use. TYFS
@growingoutthebox2 жыл бұрын
Hey Mark. I hope all is well with you and the wife. Actually, Milky Spores which is also bacillus thuringiensis BT is a one time soil treatment for grubs.Just as caterpillars are susceptible to treatment with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), Japanese beetle larvae are susceptible to treatment with milky spore. It's feeds off the larvae of the grubs and continues to spread sores. It's also organic. Control the grubs you control the Japanese Beetle. It's not a overnight process but it is from what I have gathered one, if not the best long term treatment.

Yes I have heard of wrapping the stalk but the vine borer will lay eggs on leaves as well. If you are allowing them to crawl just bury the stalks as the plant grows and remove leaves from the area where it has already fruited and bury it. No sure way but that increases your chances.

@growingoutthebox sometime this winter if you can do a vid on sweet peppers that is a general tutorial and one that deals with disease and pest threats and protection,I would love that. I had only one pepper plant grow and it also looked fabulous! It bloomed but never produced pepper. Then I saw black fugus it appeared, on areas throughout the length of the stem. I researched and believe it is Black Leg virus or fungus. Can you elaborate on this disease and how to combat it? I thought that my solo pepper babe was all good...sadly, she succumbed to it.
@growingoutthebox2 жыл бұрын
Sweet peppers are pretty much straight forward. but I just may do that because In my #TNOG2022springgardeningwrapup a few people didn't know why their sweet peppers were dropping leaves and not producing during this heat spell we have been having. That's normal because sweet peppers don't care for temps over 85 degrees. Hot peppers are a little better in heat up to maybe 95 and then they will slow as well. I talk about it in the #TNOG2022springgardeningwrapup video on my channel. Let me know if that helps?.

My squash did nothing this year. I just bowed to the borer.
@growingoutthebox2 жыл бұрын
The moth that lays the eggs for the squash vine borer is now gone back underground so if you still had a plat that made it this far you would be in great shape. Right now my plants are thriving with ease. "We have to get you a black box"! LOL🤣I also tried using grafting tape around the stalk of the plant. It also worked so do give up, we just have to be more creative. Beautiful day to you.

I am currently growing my squash in large self wicking tubes. I was hoping to reduce the invasion by planting radish along with placing fresh mint stems in the foliage.

I had 6 beautiful zuch plants as my first crop attempt. Harvested about 3 small zuch and although I examined and intensely attended to my zuch, disaster struck with Vine Bore. I had no clue. Now I will use BT in the stems early as a preventative. I LOVE your black box. Brilliant 👏. I am an organic cook and gardener so I value the natural and less intrusive therapies. I binge YOUTube vids for gardneing and YOU are now at the top of my play list. If you have any suggestions about spinach, I appreciate. For some reason mine have sprouted snd growing but so minimally. Also, any vids on bush beans. Again, I have two sprouted and only of of the two appear to be advancing. I am so in for that black box. Please send me info on where I can purchase!!!! THANK YOU @growingoutthebox

Spinach I'll be growing this fall. I'm no professional be from what I have found, they like total darkness for better germination. What I'll be doing is placing a sheet of cardboard over the seeds after planted - checking for germination everyday after day 5. From there you should be fine. Funny you would mention bush beans because the deer just came in last night and took the tops off all my green beans, black beans and sweet potatoes. In this video I'm going to be talking mostly about building an invisible fence around the garden for deer protection. those jokers got me good but I was able to salvabe a lot and even better.... Save seeds for next year.

That’s some impressive, surgical technique!! I’m not sure I’m that committed, though. I will plan to grow vertically in at least half of my zucchini and squash, carefully prune, cover vines with foil and use BT injections. But, in the end, I plant more in my greenhouse after my first round have started growing in my beds. This way, if I lose the battle, I’ve got backup plants. 🤞🏻🙏

Every tip you touch on was excellent. I will upgrade my needle and will use only rain water and add the cinnamon and tumeric to mask my pruning of leaf. I only injected the BT and I sprayed. Did not do the rest. Thank you brother. Can’t wait to do battle with that vein bug.
@growingoutthebox Жыл бұрын
Thanks for stopping by. Also, where ever you suspect a hole from the vine borer inject the BT at least 4 inches above. Where there is evidence on a leaf cut it back to the stalk. Growing vertical allows for better inspection so you can stop damage sooner. Happy growing and if you come up with something with better effect please let me know.

Is that Mainstays a small enough needle? Also, we are past the rainy season in my area to collect rain water. For my house plants, I fill a 5 gallon bucket of tap water and let is sit for 24 hours to evaporate the chlorine, but it still has chlorimine. Will that also kill the BT?

BT only works when the larvae ingests it. It disrupts the digestive system causing them to no longer eat and that is what kills the larvae.
