Definitely a good match to use as a refereeing exercise. Both of Rodriguez' earlier calls (1st Yes Let and 2nd No Let) should have been Strokes, but otherwise good reffing for a relatively stop-start match.

This match up is a good example of squash being about a lot more than the quality of shots. Both great players, and take a look at that backhand exchange starting at 12:53. Matthew v. Willstrop this is not.

11:52 massive stroke to Rodriguez, the ref calls NO LET?? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I see Rodriguez reaching that ball easily, it was nowhere near the side wall or nick!

Yeah, agreed. Ng is not able to provide a direct path there, and Rodriguez most likely would have hit a winner given Ng's sluggish movement. Rodriguez didn't help himself with the precedent set at 6:38, where he was close to a No Let for a very lackadaisical effort to play the ball (that's the explanation for Joey that Lee didn't provide).

I think there was room behind Ng (although there probably would have been sufficient interference for a let in that case if Rodriguez had taken the more correct line).

While we're talking decisions, I think Rodriguez got screwed by the foreshortened camera at 20:00. It's clear from the front wall camera that Ng ran right at him, unless Ng's plan was to run directly into the sidewall and then slide up it to where the ball was 6 feet in front of him.

@@watching99134 I think you're right that Rodriguez could have gone behind Ng and still gotten that ball, but I would say if Rodriguez is given direct access to that ball from beside it rather than behind it, he most likely hits a winning drive (either down the rail or crosscourt, depending on which way Ng clears). He doesn't have to go so far out of his way to avoid interference that he gives up that winning advantage.

For someone playing in this league, I’ve always thought Rodriguez is a bit of a one trick pony compared to the other top players, whose games seem to have a few more arrows in their quivers.

Why do the commentators keep referring to Ng by one syllable of his given name, rather than either both syllables of his name or his family name?

Maybe he's confused about which name is his middle name, which name is his surname given the reverse (by [non-Hungarian] Western standards) listings of Asian names, etc. (but they should do their research beforehand).

Not sure if they know how to pronounce Ng? The referee did a good job pronouncing it when she awarded a stroke to Ng near the latter part of the game.

Yes I thought Rodriguez stepped back early around 7:10 to prevent Ng from clearing rather than to play the ball (Yes Let).
