I don't have any experience with old CAT's but I occasionally dig into an old International tractor from time to time. The lesions I've learned from watching you and the advise you give, give me confidence to do things I would have been too scared to do my self. Thank you for taking the time to show the rest of us what is possible, and thank you for caring about old iron and the stories it has to tell. I hope one day to have my Farmall M working as well as Senior's.

Thanks for another educational video for those of us that don't own or work on Cats, but find it interesting watching you. You are never going to be the only dork, I hadn't seen a seal like that until now and thought it was neat to ! Kinda wondering if somebody had the hubs apart before did they beat on the center with the puller on to shock them off, it looks like they had a real good try what ever they did. I hear you on the gear oil stink, I pulled a hub on a 20 year old FWA tractor a few years ago. I don't know how old the gear oil was, but man there was some pressure in the hub. The stink that came out was just like standing next to a full propane tank and the hose burst. The stink was so bad in the shop that day I had to quit and leave the doors open , the next week it wasn't bad but there was a hint of it still floating around. If I was a rich man I'd take a hint and send you an M18 impact wrench kit , maybe somebody might take pity on the air impact and sponsor you one L.O.L, I know it's not your aim for getting one but it'd be nice for you . Take care.

To pull the sprockets I made a flat plate 1" x 4" x 12" with a 1 1/4 hole in the center. It has many other holes some tapped some not, for various machines to adapt the hollow ram cylinder to use hydraulic pressure. I bolt the plate on the sprocket, and then I can use the H-Bar puller. Great vid, keep up the good work! Herb

Those bull gears, are they reversible? I.e., if you have the one that is starting to shell material off the teeth on the drive side, can you swap it to the other side of the tractor and have a fresh side to drive on (except in reverse gear)? Those brake bands look like they have al LOT of material left in them too, it will be interesting to see if they can be saved. I'm assuming the drum that is all shiny on the outside is the one you were dragging the brake on to help release the stuck steering clutch. How long did you have to spend in the shower to get that rotten oil smell out of your nostrils? lol

When you mentioned the lingering aroma of the old gear lube I remembered that whale oil was used in some gear trains. I remember working on an old Cadillac axle and getting some of that lube on my corduroy pants and yes, you cannot get rid of that smell. I still have some of that ancient used oil, makes for some nice cutting oil.

Great Video!! Amazing what the Engineers of the past could design and make. As a gassed mac, I knew theory of diesels, but had no practical experience in working them. You talked about the "Grove/Orchard" Transmission set up in a past video. I have seen a video on KZbin in the last few days, showing it. The "short" gear shift assembly you displayed, is the one that was installed on the crawler, and you could clearly see the steering levers installed in the "other" position. Those knobs must be a problem, as it was missing...

@bobuk57223 жыл бұрын
Hi Andrew, I know absolutely nothing about this but I can't see how it could be caused by use. My guess is it's either an assembly error or a design flaw. The later would not be surprising - all these clearances had to be worked out manually in the drawing office back in the day - I'm amazed by what they could do back then. Cheers. BobUK

Are those bull gears reversible? I was wondering since there was wear on the forward drive face of the gears if you swap them left to right so the with sides are on the reverse side. You won’t be pushing in reverse so less chance to chew into it further. Those oil cups look like they were made to get really close to the bull gears and possibly scrape oil off of those raised points on the gear side. Am I wrong in what I’m asking or seeing
