On installing the plungers, I take one at a time engage the yoke and align with rack timing mark then put the barrel down on the plunger, can use a wire to hold the plunger in rack when putting barrel down on it!!! But your way worked well, so great job!

Takes me back to the old college days and using the spill timing method. Still strange to me, seeing the pump assembled on the engine rather than on the bench with phasing and calibration adjustment carried out on a pump test machine. In UK, these used to be Hartridge back in the day. Really love the way this old kit was so beautifully made. Thanks Squatch!

I was humming a cute little diddy while walking down Craigslist Lane minding my own business one day and was mercilessly accosted by several 955 Caterpillars (a ' C' and 'E' series) Traxcavators. I must admit, I did have an old can (quart) of RPM Delo 30W in my back pocket. Well they followed me home. What I thought were two D4's I soon found that the C series has a D4 undercarriage but the E series has a D6 undercarriage. I scrambled quickly to secure another C series for parts - Without thinking! Now I have three (count them; one, two, three that's "3") Traxcavators; a 955C 1957, 12A03563 D4, a 955C 1958, 12A04040 D4 and a 955E 1960, 12A08263 D6 . This channel has been invaluable to me as well, I have been able to adapt and transfer a lot of the information here to my rigs with the added benefit of learning a new language - Caterpillar. Thanks to Squatch253 and SquatchSenior

Ok I think I see what the tracking bar and gear in the high pressure injection does when at idle the gear is turned to where the fuel can bypass back to the tower and the gear turns a little more and more with more throttle until full throttle and max pressure, full power. Wew I just spent several hours watching these videos out of sequence because I found #32 first and thought that was the one I needed to understand it all. question do I really understand. Yes I think so. Thanks again Toby you lead me I just had to figure out what and where to follow.

I really enjoyed the explanation of how fuel metering is done. None of this piezo stuff for these guys! It would be interesting to know how closely each cylinder matches the others in fuel quantity delivered per cycle. Obviously it’s close enough. An ingenious system. And now that fuel pump is ready for a coat of late 30s Cat engine enamel! :)(Honestly I couldn’t care less if you paint any of it but I couldn’t resist some good natured ribbing after seeing how adamant you were about it and how many people expressed strong opinions on it.)

Great video again, it is amazing the detail in the older Caterpillar Manuals, I worked in the oil field some years on Land Rigs using Cat D399s for power generation, those manuals allowed the Rig Mechanic to cover most eventualities. As #5J1113 wont be used anytime soon do you use any form of corrosion inhibitor, or is the assembly Lube sufficient to keep internal corrosion at bay?

The plaques look neat in the shop. I see this Caterpillar (and other American ) diesel fueling systems are different than Bosch or CAV. My guess is its to do with patents, where US manufacturers like Caterpillar, Detroit Diesel etc went their own way and made slight changes to the fuel metering section.

You answered some of my own personal questions, including one about the grease Zert on the flywheel for the pilot bearing. Anyways I wanna check my injection pumps and see if any are out of adjustment since my 41’ engine is not running as smoothly as I would like it compared to my 59’ dozer. *Do you know what the collar on the injection pump is for? I noticed that when I replaced my plunger it did not come with a collar or lock pin on the top. I had to use the collar off the old one. I could send a pic or video of what I’m talking about for reference if you would like. Anyways good stuff my friend!! Keep up the good work. I’m sure your sharing much insight and giving inspiration to many of us blue collar folks. I look forward to your videos. Good day Sir!!

Toby, since you know the thread size shouldn't you be able to determine how many turns on the yoke it would take to put it in the range necessary?
@KStewart-th4sk4 жыл бұрын
@Mark Gillett Why go to all that bother! He'd have it done by the time he is measuring and ciphering!
@markhgillett4 жыл бұрын
@@KStewart-th4sk I was kinda of kidding but it is very simple. All threads are expressed in number of threads per inch/mm. A simple example, we will assume 10 threads per inch. So for each revolution that would 0.10 of an inch. Going further each quarter turn would be 0.025 inches. FYI 10 threads per inch would be a very course thread Just the way I think. BTW;; I think Toby is doing a really excellent job, way better than I could do and his video skills have come a long way and he is also at the top of that game.

Quick question for something possibly easy to answer, sorry if it doesn't make sense. How do you tell that you're on the compression stroke without having the head on? As far as TDC is concerned- doesn't that event happen only at crank, or is there something else somewhere that signifies tdc of compression stroke?

I'm working on a d4400. In a d42t. Still waiting on my service man's manual to come. 1st one got lost in the mail. It's real sluggish like it has no power. Got my depth guage and was gonna check the pump lifter yolks. Are the lines in the pumps gears supposed to be lined up with the straight tooth rack lines with the half moon shaped cutout at the line. Mine were all 2 teeth off. From those lines on the rack. Thinking if so. This is probably the problem.
