Laughed out loud at "Preparation H" as you asked "Why are you laughing? Good on you Squatch for keeping your family legacy going. I go to a Clam Bake yearly where the "old farmers" in the group talk about either buying back their first tractor or looking for one just like it to refurbish. Since you have kept yours in site, it will make for several good videos. I look forward to following along. SIT Christine, SIT! ...

All right! I’m looking forward to another build! Hope Christine doesn’t get jealous seeing you working on the H. This video looks like it was filmed in the middle of January. We’re gonna hit 86 degrees this weekend in southern New Hampshire. Still it must feel good to have made all that progress on X231, a major turning point in that project. I can’t believe the H started with that super slow cranking speed.

No surprise to me. I used to hand crank an M. The coldest weather that I started her in was at about zero. She was a bit stiff so I blocked the clutch pedal down and she started pretty much like she always did. I had to let the clutch pedal up slowly to keep it from stalling and I had to let her warm up a little while before I could get the shifter to work but she ran just fine. She had the same points in the distributor for at least 10 years. I would clean them up every Spring with an emery board and check the gap. I miss that old girl.

I can't wait for this series! Improviing the first tractor you ever drove is special, no matter what model. I am in the process of doing the same. Can't wait to see the work on the H. I still have my great grandfather's 1941 M which I operated on steel wheels in my youth and then restored decades ago but is now in need of pretty much all the same things as your H. In fact it was flat belt drive trouble and your work on the Super M belt pulley that brought me to your channel.

@Squatch253 the numbers you gave there are from the '49 year list I have, bud. Whose list do you use? For 45, the numbers I have are 88085 - about 105563. Rather, 88085 is the first '45 and 105564 is the first '46. I typically use Guy Fay's IH Tractor Data Book for my numbers. And found the info on the Wisconsin Historical Societies IH DATA information.

Production of the M never really stopped, it just slowed down due to lack of materials. Actually there were more units produced in 1944 than there were in 45 and 46. Its my understanding there were waiting lists for tractors at that time. Production really went crazy during the post war boom in the late 40s and early 50s.

@Squatch253 simple mistake. I'm not sure why I didn't think to check the H list myself...lol. IHC is my color of choice, but it's not hard to slip up on the various models. I've decided, like you with the D-2, that my focus is on the 4-series. Specifically, the O-4. That alone takes up enough brain cells to memorize every feature, variation, change s/n, etc.

Preparation H!!! I thought I would mess my pants!! Best laugh I've had all week. Toby, with your exemplary workmanship, and attention to detail, that Farmall H will be just as much a "Queen" as the Super M. You know, International rear ends always had an inherited Whine about them, every International truck, (large, single axel, or tandem) that had in house International manufactured rears, whined like crazy. I grew up in southern wva, and a block company in town had 5 old R-190 International tandem dump trucks that hauled sand from a sand quarry back to the plant. You could hear them coming a mile away both loaded and empty, didn't matter, from the gear whine of the rears. Like you said earlier, you may not get it all out, with newer gears but at least you tried. It's just the nature of the brute's. Good luck, I will be watching!!

You do a good job with your work but you need to realize that some original things are junk mainly that 6 volt electrical system, I grew up with a 8n Ford and forever it barely would start and when I got old enough a old mechanic showed me how to convert it to 12 volts and we left the 6 volt starter on it and put a GM alternator on it and we never had to replace the starter and from that day on weather it was 10 or 100 degrees when you barely touched the starter button and bumped the choke it was running. period, that old 6 volt junk was pure junk, original or not, even with a brand new battery it was still junk.

Have you ever thought of using an 8 volt battery (4 cells) for the tractors? The only modification you have to do is to kick the old adjustable voltage regulator from 8 volts (for 6 volt battery) to 10 Volts so the battery can charge , all other components can handle the voltage increase (as long as the battery terminals are clean and tight) and it makes it easier to start and the battery lasts longer as well. We have had quite a few 6-volt electric cars and a 4-cell battery makes quite a difference in starting.
@erik_dk842
@erik_dk842 Жыл бұрын
I read about the 8 volt battery upgrade some years ago, and it makes perfect sense. Most of the old stuff has huge voltage drops to the consumers, so the lights and horn will actually work as intended, when they no longer need to run on less than 6 Volts

You maybe didn't need to swap the battery 1 of the times. Some of these generators will power the distributor above idle, so once it was running the battery could come out. With a magneto I wouldn't think twice about running without a battery. Speaking of magnetoes, this was probably a magneto tractor originally and maybe even had steel rears in factory form. Not all vertical Delco distributors are for an Allis. Delco marketed replacement distributors for IH and other tractors that originally had magnetoes. In the 50s the higher compression pistons and upgraded replacement internals to match the super and numbers series in current production required a distributor with modified advance curve compared to the mag. Also the labor ($) to tune up a mag was frowned upon and the operation didn't make sense to some people so distributors were a welcome upgrade purchase.

Delco-Remy sold the distributor kits back in the day, the advertising proclaimed better economy with a better ignition curve. A lot were bought to replace the original magneto ignition, popular option on war tractors, so they would run without a battery , as you know stuff has to be in pretty good tune to start on a 6volt system when it’s below zero!

Serious power and gears .. Dad ran that till he sold the farm in 95 - only one motor and one TA and I fitted a turbo to it which upped the neddies for the same fuel . He ran a 234 two row harvester in it picking sweet corn , then cribbed corn with it till a new idea 4 row came along ..

Things that I like on a farmall H that doesn't bother me . The extra clamp on each side next to the drawbar one , Usually left over from cultivator, weather you need it or not I like them on it. The seat I favor has the shock absorber in the rear instead of in the middle. I favor the battery ign. distributor that go straight up over the straight forward ones ( the hood doesn't bother much in my opinion) the roller drawbar obviously better. I also don't mind 6 volt system. (although the batteries need replace more than twice as often as a 12 volt battery) & you need the very heavy battery cables. I'm still not sure about adding a solenoid, one of mine has one works out fine. the newer H or proceeding farmalls have the keyed amp meter box. The 1945 h"s are my favorite also with the steel shift knob. As long as someone changed it to the easy ryder seat and it has tight steering and good tight/ straight sheet metal. here's a couple topics on farmall letter series that would make a good video 1. take a farmall H transmission cover and show where every spot where there is not a blind bolt that could leak water into the tranny when left outside & 100% fix seals to add to bolt or or a not ugly way to add flat plates to cover the troubled areas with silicon& flat plate. #2 find a way to paint the hood with a stencil to equal the factory paint on tractor name . JUST AN IDEA

Project Preparation H commence 😂. The old girl reminds me of riding around in the back of my grandads van in the 60s and 70s. Good honest trans without syncs.

Great that the H has stayed in the family 👌 the cosmetic restoration if it's anything like as good as the M you will have an awesome pair of Farmall tractors 💪👍

I would have left the Ford running, removed the battery, put it on the H and moved it to the final location. Then backed the Ford, without a battery, into its place.

Nice to see the correct Ball special fruit jar on the precleaner. It's been a while since I pulled the cover on a rear-end. Thank you.

hey when i was 11 dad gave me a 51 tricked out H with plow disk and cultivator. it was mine for 6 years. you dont need to do that wheel switch on the little genius plow you only need to readjust the tongue on the plow. the operators book shows how to set the tongue up properly.. if the plow was set up for a tractor on steel the tongue had to be set different than if it was on rubber. check this out before you do all that changing.. i had to do this on my plow i also changed out the slow speed mow-boards for the long high speed mow-boards that let me plow in 3rd gear

This new project sounds excellent! This is the type of project a lot of people need or want to tackle on old equipment. I hope you can provide a little how to tutorial on the painting. Thanks for all the work!

My O-4 #706 also has the Delco-Remy vertical distributor on it. I'm not saying it is original to the tractor as it was 68 years old when I got it, but patina wise, it is correct. I think it was either a dealer or early early modification to the Ole girl. I like to leave my tractors in their work clothes. But there was enough work needed done and tinwork replacement needed. I couldn't blend the looks, so 110% restoration will be done. The right bolts andactory original everything. The only thing not from IH will be the tires, tubes, air in the tubes, spark plugs, gaskets, oil, filter, primer, and paint.

I have an old 2 bottom 14 in plow that was converted from horse-drawn to 3 pt. The guys that did the conversion didn't set it up right. It never has worked right. I will never get rid of my great grandfather's plow.

Have a '63 Massey Ferguson 101 Industrial...beefed up version of the TO 35. Got it in early '14 to help w/ the slowly progressing property cleanup as it has a loader bucket. It has scars from previous ownership...mostly from a life prior to the PO which was clearly harsh in a road dept w/ asphalt that got painted over...damaged & repaired loader frame. As the lift rams were shot & getting OEM replacements was out it ended up with reinforced pivots to allow the use of the heavier cylinders I was able to grab. Eventually found some slightly skinnier ones better suited for my needs that actually gave enough lift to clear the sides of a 77 IH Loadstar dump. The RH brake barely grabs & likely saw next to no use as the pedal has little wear while the LH brake almost buries & does work if you put your weight into your leg. The clutch pedal needs adjustment. I really need to park the ole MF & give it the attention due.

I have an H I would donate to your cause. It has the correct seat. The rear half of the tractor is complete with very little wear on the pedals. Missing the front bolster as it was used on another project. The engine block is complete with the correct distributor. Not sure if the engine is free. Located just east of Davenport, Iowa in Illinois. I can set it on a trailer.
