Great walkthrough. Surprised the purple spacing mode was not shown.

I have a very small system which doesn’t yet have env or vca, and only 8hp available, I could grab a doepfer A-142-2 to solve this, but it appears this might be a more interesting way to achieve a similar thing and give me 2hp and a great filter, what would you suggest or think?
@CinematicLaboratory7 ай бұрын
In a very small system I guess The SD will give you way more sonic textures and stereo processing, but not having an envelope is a bit of a problem. However, you can still play the filter cut-off manually. I'd go for the SD.based on your description.

I choose for the WMD Overseer as stereo filter. It has this 'tilt' function where the filter sweeps can be panned... Besides being a 'DJ filter', you can still use Frequency and Resonance independently. It was either the SD or the Overseer, but I decided before the new 'noise reduction' firmware for the SD came out. Of course the Overseer is analogue and doesn't have all these other filter options.
@CinematicLaboratory4 жыл бұрын
Overseer is a great choice. I remember reading noise problems with the SD but forgot about those. I've been thinking about the Instruo tràigh ladder filter but it was out of stock everywhere so I almost accidentally ran into the Grand Terminal's digital filters and noticed SD used the same firmware. Endorphin.es made serious progress with all version 4 firmwares (Shuttle Control, Milky Way, SD). These modules get better with every update. So I decided to take the 'noise' risk with SD and noticed it's dead silent with raw oscillators (which you expect to drive through it).

Awesome video! Which module is providing the JP 8000 supersaw voice?

That's good old Plaits, top red mode. Braids has one too, but the Plaits version is totally awesome. It can only do one lead voice, but it's great with a lot of reverb and echo.

Thanks for this it is amongst the most comprehensive musically useful, enjoyable and informative Sqwk Dirty filter walkthroughs that I have seen and heard to date. The feel of knobs are particularly important to me when I use a filter. I have Make Noise, Noise Engineering and Electosmith filters amongst others and the feel of the knobs have a tangible effect on the perception of how you are sculpting the sound. How do the Sqwk Dirty knobs respond and feel to you? Is there an emotional almost haptic connection?
@CinematicLaboratory4 жыл бұрын
My version of the Sqwk Dirty has the old knobs. However, when you look at the Queen of Pentacles and the new Running Order, you can see Endorphin.es is using new ones. I am not that picky about knobs but these new ones actually trigger the emotional response of feeling great. I already asked Endorphin.es if they will be available separately and seriously thinking about replacing all Noise Engineering knobs. They're fine, but they blink too much in creative light so you can't' see the white stripe. The new Endorphin.es ones are matte which is perfect.
@dodecaodr7064 жыл бұрын
I don't mind the knobs on the SD, and I think it sounds great. My complaint is with the placement of the knobs... when the module is fully wired up with ins/outs + modulation, the knobs are physically hard to get at. If they'd used the new knobs like the Pentacles, it'd be worse as there's no "grip" on those ones since they're smaller and smoother.
@CinematicLaboratory4 жыл бұрын
@@dodecaodr706 Totally agree, but that's the downside of any 6 or 4 HP module packed with functionality. I just can't work with the 2HP and Pico stuff either. The Fx-Aid is only four HP uses the same endorphin style old knobs. It's unworkable so I fitted the small WMD ones. You may be right about the grip!
@dodecaodr7064 жыл бұрын
@@CinematicLaboratory -- absolutely... I've got a pair of the Pico DSP modules and can only really use them as set-it-and-forget-it modules. I reealllly like the sound of the Endorphins stuff, but the jack placement just throws me off... with a Milky Way, Squwak, Airstreamer, and Godspeed altogether, the zig-zagging jack pattern makes it hard to get at anything since it sorta boxes all the knobs in. But I love working with their sound. In contrast, I also got a WMD C4RBON last week which has a ton of functionality in 4hp, but isn't all that fashionable... but the jacks cluster at the bottom which makes it easier to get at the knobs. I hadn't thought of replacing them, tho -- maybe I'll give that a go! Or perhaps use tendrils instead of standard cables... although I sorta feel like cables are the printer ink of the modular world, lol.

@@CinematicLaboratory agreed, the Noise Engineering knobs are tragic. I wish they'd use sandblasted aluminum knobs, or matte plastic. They can be tricky to replace too.

How do you feel about the SD using the knobs as attenuators rather than offsets for CV? I find this to be a weird break from convention and don't know how much it would affect my workflow. Not sure if I'm into using an extra attenuator to add an offset.
@CinematicLaboratory2 жыл бұрын
I prefer CV offset which makes it easier to dial in a 'starting point' but Endorphines works different on all modules and I am OK with that. I got used to it.
@CinematicLaboratory2 жыл бұрын
Also, what I feel is irrelevant. If a module doesn't feel right, don't go for it.

Common compliant is that it’s a noisy design, thoughts?
@CinematicLaboratory4 жыл бұрын
I dare to say that the latest 'Total Nightmare' firmware takes care of this. I noticed noise when I patched my 1010music bitbox but its output level is low so I had to add some gain. Then I patched a raw oscillator (Loquelic Iteritas) and noticed it was insanely loud and had to turn it down to decent listening levels. Obviously this also lowered the noise floor to near-zero. SD has trimmers on the back to switch between modular and line level so there's a lot you can tweak to get it right.

Cinematic Laboratory this is good news, that said I’d have to boot something to make room, ever the Eurorack struggle. 360 HP of sources and modifiers and 208 HP controls and clocks skiff, various 104 and 60 skiffs where does it stop 😭
