bow speed is the primary cause in beginners. Pull too slow and you get a screech, pull to fast and it whistles. Finding the correct bow pull is what we call "getting the cat out" ;)

I noticed that I can get that whistle most easily when crossing to the open E string from 1/2 tone below E on the A string. It feels related to whether the E string is more or less harmonically stimulated sympathetically by the preceeding note. So playing C (2nd string) crossing to open E, less chance of a whistle. However, playing Eb (2nd string) to open E string will get that whistle. You hit on this topic lightly. Thanks for your advice.

Yes, open E is the very worst. It happens to me crossing to an F-natural too.....but I've learned to eliminate that...mostly.

It also happens with me going from A to E, and more specifically, slurring on an up bow (eg A-B-C-D-Open E), and in quicker passages. It’s very frustrating because I’ve eliminated the things you mention in the video... I think it may be either something to do with my bowing technique or the fact that I live in Taiwan where the humidity is a lot higher than in the west. It also happens on the other strings to a lesser extent. (More A than D & G). Sometimes it’s a full on squeak/whistle, sometimes it’s just a kind of grinding sound.

That's not unusual. But watch your e string and make sure it's not digging into your bridge.

In another of your excellent videos you recommended a Corelli medium light 'e' string. I was having just a little bit of a poor tone so I bought a Corelli 'e'. Fantastic! What an improvement right from the get-go, even before it is properly broken in. They are cheap and made in France where I live. Thank you for making my playing so much better!

My E string sounds fine unless I play G sharp. It just started yesterday that every time I play a high G sharp it gives an awful scratchy sound but as soon as I move on to a different note on the E string it sounds okay again. I've checked the bridge and rosin build up and have rosined my bow but it hasn't changed

Check to see if your violin has a wolf or possibly a suboptimally placed soundpost. You may need a luthier or more experienced violinist to help evaluate this.

I had the same experience with gold "E" strings whistling so I don't use them. Changing back to a standard "E" string fixed it. Check out the Warchal Amber Violin E that prevents whistling in a unique way. Nice video. Thanks!

Your videos are just full of helpful hints and exercises for me to use in addition to my lessons. My teacher is very helpful but naturally she cannot devote a lot of time to me privately. Also, I'm learning to read music, this has been a real struggle for me. Just a hint for people, you can get a special prescription to help you see music on the stand better. I didn't know that before.

+Red Desert Violin I had cataract surgery so I don't need correction except for reading and now for music so my Dr. had me measure the distance to the music stand and he gave me a prescription just for those. They really are a big help. I will look at your website and the reading music class. Thank you By the way, there is a great site called Zenni where you can order eyeglasses at a fraction of the cost of some stores and it is really good. You might want to look at it.

Thank you, this was a very helpful video. It turns out the tube for the e string was far ahead of the bridge which made my e string sounds annoying. Now that I adjusted the tube, it sound mellowed out and feels really good in the ears.

Thank you! My experience has been that some brands are squeekers (obligatto, pi, gold) on both my violins but others (Larsens, Eva's, Perpetual & Goldbrokat) don't. My favourite is Hill special E ♥️😊

Red Desert Fiddle One other thing that I don't think was mention is the slurred bowing passages like D# or D on A crossing to E back and forth. I find that choosing the right part of the bow combined with speed and weight helps to avoid the squeaking E. I happen to use a heavy gauge Gold E because on my violin it actually mitigates against the squeaking E so my experience was opposite to yours.

Thanks Laura. Nice to know the odds are in our favour. :) Another reason the E string (or any string) squeaks is if you're not "dropping and lifting" your left hand fingers fast enough, right? Or if they're not landing squarely on the string. (In essence, creating slight harmonics each time you drop and lift.)

Great information from you and RD Violin, as usual! I have been experiencing a squeaky-E since I put new Dominant (medium) stings on my violin. I was happy to hear that I could move the sleeve up to the bridge to both protect the bridge and possibly reduce the potential for squeaks, but I find that the sleeve does not budge. I don't want to mess with it too much, but shall I loosen the string and try some more or just leave well enough alone? It's a considerably longer sleeve than the one you show on your instrument. Hi Barbara, I would DEFINITELY loosen your E string, and gently INSIST that the sleeve move back. It's probably sort of mooshed onto the string, and with a little encouragement, it will loosen. I have had strings with really long sleeves too. (the long ones I've had were light green).

I tried the Kaplan as well and it stopped the whistling but had a far too 'dead' sound for me - not very powerful and no resonance. I heard that all the 'non-whistling' E strings are wound. Recently this problem has got so bad that I've stopped playing certain pieces in public if they feature a lot of open Es. I'll try the tips suggested here, but I've also just ordered some pure gut E strings to see if that makes a difference; maybe it'll make it worse :(

Mr Cheese . the sound was so different from what I was used to. the volume and penetrating aspect of my 'then' particular sound was gone . it was a softer sound. Correct for the Baroque oeriod. i am not a good violinist, so my impression is that of an ignorant person. that is not said unkindly. merely honest.

I mistakenly picked up 'Heavy ' strings. I normally use 'medium' tension strings which apply approx 65 pounds of pressure on the bridge. The heavy strings apply approx 75 or 80 pounds of pressure when tuned. my question is "What are the pros and cons of these two types of strings ?"

Gregory, different violins sound better with different gauges. Medium is the starting point....get medium unless you have a specific reason to get light/heavy. Light, thin gauges are quicker to respond, but they will have less depth and will be brighter. Thick heavy gauges will have slower response, are a little more "work" to play on, and could sound muffled or dark. (not necessarily a bad thing...but still....) Go with medium unless you wanna experiment in achieving better balance across your violin.

But what can you do to prevent surface noise??

A certain amount of surface noise is normal for all violins. And in fact, some really GREAT violins have more surface noise because the violin body is so extremely resonant. If you stand 5 feet away from the violin, the tone overpowers the surface noise, so it's not a problem. BUT, if there is excessive surface noise or if it's really unpleasant, it could be that the violin needs a soundpost adjustment. It could be an open seam, or a change in weather, all sorts of things that a luthier could help you fix. Other than that, I'd maybe experiment with different strings. Find out what you currently have on your violin....are they synthetic, steel, or gut? Find out as much as you can, and then try something totally different. ALSO, you might have too much rosin on the bow, or it might be too light. (darker rosins will be less scratchy). FInally, if the bow is brand new, or if you just got a rehair, it needs to be broken in, and will be extremely crunchy until then. Good luck. Let me know what you discover so we can all learn!

Thanks for your sweet comment! YES, the bridge absorbs humidity, even in the case, as does everything else----our horsehair, the instrument, everything. I once read that in high humidity a violin can absorb enough moisture to dampen a paper towel (if it could all be extracted and put into the paper towel)

Well....do you mean how to know when the bow you are using is no longer any good? Or how to know when you need to upgrade to a better bow? So, with good bows, we just replace the bow hair at about $75 per re-hair. With cheap bows.....they are often cheaper to replace than to re-hair. If your bow has lost lots of hair, it's time to replace or rehair. Wood bows if they are neglected (or made of bad wood) will warp....so it curves in a wonky way. It is expensive to fix the warp.....and again, cheaper to get a new one than fix a cheap one. If you buy a synthetic bow (carbon fiber being the most popular), they are way lower maintenance....but I just don't like them as well as a fine pernambuco bow. The pernambuco is more responsive, lightweight, balanced, finer workmanship....but alas....expensive and more worry to protect from getting broken or warped. So if you are a student, a carbon fiber might be a great bow to get you from student to high intermediate, and then I would probably advise you to look into a pernambuco bow. Does that answer you?

A Larsen Tzigane E string (medium gauge) is very resistant to whistling and sounds beautiful. It is not super expensive either.

+Dorse Sears GREAT to know. I recently learned that the Goldbrokat is also resistant to whistling. I thought Goldbrokat was the gold plated E......(those whistle horribly)....but those are NOT the Goldbrokat brand. I was confused. Thanks for the info on the Larsen.

I like the Goldbrokat as well. However the Tzigane E is even more resistant to squeaks than Goldbrokat and it produces a more singing, "prettier", response over Goldbrokat, in my experience. I like both of them actually, but I prefer Tzigane.

Oh, good thought. I would think LACK OF ROSIN would be #1. Dirty and Old would not be huge triggers for squeaking if there is lots of rosin. (but of course it could make it worse if the hair is old or dirty, BECAUSE old dirty hair doesn't retain rosin well. Good thinking. Thanks.

I can't move the tube on the E string. It seems to be stuck :/ I've always thought that it had to sit on top of the bridge, oh well! you learn something new everyday

It does sit on top of the bridge, to protect it, but it shouldn't hang over the front....instead, it should hang over the back, toward the tail piece. (and if you have parchment on your bridge, or an ebony inlay, you don't need the tube at all.

Hi Lora, great video and I love that blouse on you! I see the violins hanging on the wall. I have a music room that I practice in and keep instruments. When I finish practicing I safely hang my violins as opposed to putting them back in their cases. Can this create an issue. I live in Louisiana and the room is AC and heated so humidity is somewhat controlled. Thanks again love you stuff!! David

Hi David! As long as humidity is somewhat controlled, I do not see a problem with hanging the instruments. The only issue would be dust build-up. The advantage of hanging them is that they are exposed to light, and most destructive bugs avoid light, so you can avoid wood-eating hair-eating bugs. Plus that keeps you 1 step closer to practicing!

Yes. First, I would try to improve your accuracy and technique in regards to playing on your A string. Teach your bow arm PRECISELY the elevation you need to hit only the A string. (in your case you will need to RAISE your arm so it moves away from the E string level) Second, try bowing a little closer to the bridge. Last resort, you might need to put a "parchment" patch under your A string to raise it up a little. Try the first 2 ideas first, and use this as a last resort.....because if you raise your A string, then it can make you start hitting your D string on accident, and it can set off a chain reaction. If you have a luthier nearby, you can ask him or her if your bridge curvature is correct....but I would try #1 and 2 first. Good luck!

When in higher positions, play the bow closer to the string, with extra bow weight, and extra firm fingers on the left hand (to make sure you pin the string firmly to the fingerboard)

Any tips or exercise that you recommend for finger placement, especially for the E-string? I struggle with my finger placement, particularly for F# and G. First finger (F#) is OK. But for the second finger, either I unintentionally make my hand flat or if I am conscious about my hand movement, I invariably shift my first finger, resulting in playing a wrong pitch. How do I correct it? I have naturally short fingers. My hand position seems to be OK (self examined in mirror). I am a late beginner (just 45 years) and into my second year of learning!! Pl. help me.

Wonderful video. Just a quick comment; I've noticed that sometimes the e string will whistle when the bow happens to land on one of the harmonic partials. When I play the Bach chaconne I have to watch for that.

Can you clean the strings with alcohol? remove excess rosin?

YES, that would definitely contribute to squeaks. And yes, alcohol will do it. Just be careful not to drip it down on the varnish anywhere. (don't over-soak the cotton)

I’m experiencing squawking on my strings. Almost like difference resonance - from warm tone to weak. This tonal fluctuation occurring that no matter what I do, is ever present. I’ve changed my strings, watched where my bow lands, tried harder and lighter finger pressure, harder and lighter bow. It’s SO FRUSTRATING! What’s happening?

Hi Amy, yes, first we must exhaust the possibilities of "operator error". After you do that, then it's time to consider a luthier's help....sound post adjustment, bridge height, tailpiece, action height, or open seams, even finger tapes can all cause those symptoms. But also, you can be a detective: is it on one string? Is it on a certain finger? Is it worse on a downbows? I always had issues with gold E whistling. But others LOVE the gold E. Try changing the angle of your left hand slightly...sometimes we assume it's our bow hand...but it could be your left hand.

I played one day... sounds fine, then 2 days later...My strings have all suddenly gotten a flat "nasally" sound...not resonating like B4. I tried moving and even removing the chinrest and still...so I'm pretty sure it's not that...my strings are less than 2 months old. Sounds post hasn't moved, don't see any open seams,and I'm pretty sure I didn't forget how to bow in 48 hours. Help?

Gosh, did you get this figured out, Cris? My first guess would have been open seams. Check your bridge, make sure it's straight. The tailpiece cord can sometimes build up pressure in it, and if you press your thumb sideways on each side, sometimes you get a "CLICK" when it releases the pressure. Try that. Other than that, if you are a student.....you are changing SOMETHING in your approach on those bad days, and you need to be very observant to figure out what you are changing. Maybe the angle of your shoulder rest? (pay attention to every millimeter or take a picture on a good day) Clothing can change things. The room your practice in. Fingernails. A hangover, LOL....these can all change your success. Let me know what you discover. I love hearing what people figure out!

Posting a question and would really appreciate your response. :) I am playing "Adoration" by Felix Borowski. The last note of the piece is the very high "D" on the "E" string. The note is only a few cm from the edge of the fingerboard and it is held for two measures. I have reasonable tone production and use Simon Fischer's "Basics" book to improve my technique. However, I am having a bit of difficulty producing a nice tone on that very last high "D" note. I can play the rest of the piece reasonably well. Any hints on playing very high notes on the "E" string and producing a beautiful tone? Your advice is GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!

Where the heck did this question come from? I just saw it just now!!!!!!!! ANYWAY, yes, I have great ideas for you, but you probably already worked it out. First, when playing up in high positions, move the bow as close to the bridge as possible. Higher positions should be closer to the bridge, lower positions don't have to be so close. Second, that note ending Adoration is not loud, so you will want to cushion the note and ease up on the bow weight. Light bow, close to the bridge, and turn the hair on the side, so it's just a clean edge of hair on the E string. Those 2 tips should set you up nicely.

So, in 3rd position, you play a C#, and Bb, as in low 4 on the E string? (just trying to be clear). I would suspect a couple things. 1) it could be that your action is too high. You need to have it checked, and maybe get your bridge and nut lowered, or maybe your fingerboard is warped. 2) it could be your finger pressure just isn't firm enough. you need to really pin the string to the fingerboard firmly. Check those things. And of course, your bow needs to be in a good sounding point, but you probably know that. Keep us posted with what you learn!

Why is my D string Squeaky? All string is good. Well, the G is difficult to get to the ring out. Realy clean strings. Maybe a cheap bow? Maybe to much rosin? No build up on strings.

It can be any of those things! I would first check: condition of the string, get a high quality string (Pro Arte or Dominant is good), make sure the bridge notch isn't pinching the string, make sure the bridge is standing straight up. Next, make sure you don't have too much rosin, or make sure your rosing is high quality, like a nice amber, jade, or dark green/black. (the light colored rosins are crunchy and can wreck your tone). As for cheap bow....I doubt that is causing the problem just on your D string. The other thing about D......is that it is harder to play on, because it has a string to each side of it, so the bow control must be excellent. (A string is the same thing, but it's easier because it is a thinner string so it cooperates more)

New strings never hurt. Also, check the bridge. Make sure it is standing straight up. If you can get it to a violin shop and have them take a look it would help you alot. sometimes, if a vioiln is in bad shape, we think we can't play....but it's not even our fault! Good luck.

Yes, it could be excessive rosin. A tight bow is unpleasant, but it shouldn't cause shrieking or horrid sounds, just a tiny harshness, and a ton of bounce. MOST LIKELY, your "action" is too high, from a bridge or a nut that is too high, so the strings are under too much tension. that is the most common cause of what you are describing. You can look up what mm the action should be. And maybe you can take it to a luthier. Good luck!

No, that wouldn't work, Rodney. The E tuned to an A would sound incredibly weird and soggy. Instead, why don't you try getting a different A? (also, check the same things in this video on you A string....often the A string can get pinched in the bridge wood too) I would get like a D'Addario Prelude A string...they are nice quality, but affordable. If price isn't a big issue, then I also love the Dominant A.

It could be that the "action" of your strings is too low. Your bridge might need to be raised, or your fingerboard might need planed. A good way to test this out is to put a small piece of paper under the E string on the bridge. (I fold up a gum wrapper several layers thick) Also, finger tapes have sometimes caused this problem, but again, the underlying cause is action that is too low.

Lots of things can cause that, Simon. Here are a few ideas: 1) Cheap A string. Thin strings often sound harsh. 2) Old worn out string 3) Bridge might be crooked or "leaning" instead of straight up. Carefully check, and if it is crooked, put it straight up. BUT BE CAREFUL....bridges can break or fall over. 4) String notches on the bridge might be too deep and be pinching your A string. To fix this, put a piece of paper or parchment under the string until you can get a new bridge. 5) Violin might have an open seam, or it might need a sound post adjustment. 6) Weather might have changed your violin......see #5 I'm pretty sure it's one of those things. LET ME KNOW what you discover.....I love hearing how people solve these mysteries!

Quadruple stops are a big culprit...especially certain keys and intervals. (I can't recite which ones) You can experiment with your bow angle...if it is straight, try approaching the E string a little bit crooked....usually, I pull my frog toward me slightly rather than away from me. Also, you can experiiment with breaking the chord so that you really hit the E string firmly, so it "graps" and doesn't have a chance to go into a whistle. Let me know how these work for you!

Elliot Jarvis Hi Elliot I don't have any new suggestions. Wound E's tend to whistle. Is the Pirazzi wound? Also, sometimes when we change strings, it amplifies existing problems, like a crooked bridge, or a "slit" in the bridge that is pinching the E string, or the little "sleeve" that comes with the E gets placed too far forward..... Those are the main things I would check. OFTEN, I order a DIFFERENT E string than what comes with a set. I have had AWESOME results with the Corelli Crystal E, medium. But that's just me. Check the stuff listed above....I bet it's something mechanical.

I barely bought a Stentor 2 violin and my violin seems it was out of tune, then I recently bought a tuner device and every time i thought it was in tune it wasn't and i felt it was off. Charline Gee Hi Charline, man, sorry you had this trouble! It is intimidating to work on a violin if you are not familiar with it. Here's my advice: 1) take it to a shop or to a violin school and plead for some help getting it back together. Usually, it is a simple fix for someone who is familiar with violins. 2) If your bridge really broke, then you will need a new one PROFESSIONALLY made. If you get one online, it will work, but it will not work very well. The bridges you buy online are just made from a template, with average wood, and poor workmanship. A GOOD bridge is cut by hand and is CUSTOM FIT to YOUR violin exactly.....and the difference is HUGE. So, if you can afford it, I highly advise you to get a bridge professionally fit. If you can't afford it, then get a bridge that says it has "adjustable" feet, which means the feet swivel just a little bit, so that they "mate" perfectly to the top of your violin. 3) in the future, never take all 4 strings off the violin at a time.....only 1 or 2. 4) To get the bridge set back correctly, again, take it to a shop if you can. If not, then you need to position them around the f-holes.....but please research the exact placement before you do this. 5) BE VERY CAREFUL not to knock the sound post down.....you are very vulnerable to the soundpost falling down when the strings are all off! If your sound post falls down......you would have to take it to a shop to get it put back up again. I would never attempt that even on a cheap violin. Good luck to you!!!!!!!

Charline Gee No, you can totally re-use the strings! For sure! It is just a bad idea to take them all off at once because the bridge falls and the soundpost can fall too. As for putting the bridge back on right, youtube will help you with that. As for the order of the strings.....yeah, that sucks that you don't remember which is which, but thing of it this way: The E string is wire. The A string is going to be the thinnest next to the E. So, the only mystery strings are going to be D and G. You can't go off thickness.....sometimes the D string is thickest. So, I would put one of the strings on the G and tune it up to G......if it sounds REALLY weird, then you know it's the D string. If it sounds ok, then it is probably the G. You have a 50/50 shot, go for it!

so the other thing I noticed was that when the strings were on the D string wouldn't stick and it would always become loose and my violin sounded off the whole time. is there anything that you would suggest? I bought a tuner and I would start to tune it and then i would get half way and it would still sound off. I would restart to tune it and all the strings would off again.

Here's a cure...use a 009 Ernie Ball or similar make guitar string...they won't break as easily too. Oh and they have a less shrill tone and are more responsive. Violin E stings are a rip off.

Red Desert Violin I'm not a professional and both my violins have Ernie Ball 009's E strings. I've also uses 008 gauge but little too thin for me. The difference is dramatic. Obviously you have to cut the sting own to size and there is no cloth around string at the end so getting the string to stay tight in the peg means you have to first double load into the peg ie in and around and then in again. They stay in tune after a little stretching and just have a less shrill tone whilst also being as responsive if not more responsive. You don't have to use Ernie Ball as I've tried various makes and all produced the desired effect. Professionals may baulk at stepping outside of the traditional and this may not compare tonally in regards to professional grade strings but I certainly prefer them to the Dominant's and Tonica's I've used. Tonica in particular have quality control issues imo and break far too easily. Give it a go on student violin at least and report back as I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
