Brilliant storytelling. All the years that have gone past since i first heard this means my bottle is full now.

Thank you for doing this one. A great reaction to a sad and touching song, the Texas men in the story is why they used the Country sound for it, of course Country music isn't and has never been big in the UK so, we're not exposed to it in the same way that you are therefore we don't get too sick of it. I'm not a fan of Country music either, but I do like this song all the same.

Real Story: I met Glenn Tilbrook (singer and one of the songwriters) in a pub in Greenwich many years ago. A very normal bloke. Invited me to a private acoustic gig upstairs. Was a brilliant night.

Fun Fact: The band were ambivalent about this song. They werent that fussed about whether it made the album or not. It took all of Elvis Costello's powers of persuasion as a Producer to convince them to do the track justice and for it to make the album cut. And yet, its one of Difford's greatest pieces of lyrical storytelling in my very humble opinion. Truly a great song of its time.

Here in the UK my mother loved this song. We lost her 8 years ago to cancer. The day she died this came on the radio. The lines 'home is a place that I miss very much, so the past has been bottled and labeled with love' slays me every time. I have tears in my eyes right now. I avoid it, yet I love it. We don't tend to make country music in the UK. It's not big enough. Peace out to you two.

Thanks for playing this (just catching up after a couple of weeks' vacation!). This is definitely not Squeeze's normal style, if there is such a thing, and maybe here in the UK we're less immersed in country music for it to be a problem but what makes it for me are the thoughtful lyrics. Excellent!

It was interesting to hear your comments from an American point of view. The use of country music was in the context of the lyrics. As someone said in another comment, we don't have country music so much in the UK so perhaps it was a novel way to present the story. Strangely, if you are not fans of country music, perhaps they did a great job of recreating that sound so that you weren't a big fan of this one!

Classic Squeeze, just a beautifully crafted song. It faintly reminds me of Johnny Come Lately by Steve Earle, as it touches on some similar things. It's a country song too! If you want to explore some country or country rock then maybe Buck Owens - Under Your Spell... Buck did the Bakersfield country sound, quite a bit different to Nashville. Dwight Yoakam has a kind of similar sound, he and Buck Owens were good friends, he does an incredible version of the Beach Boys song, Sloop John B. Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson are both killer songwriters. Lefty Frizzel - We had It All, is a big personal favourite. On the country rock side, Green On Red, The Dream Syndicate, Mike Ness, The Byrds

I played East Side Story a lot back in 81 and enjoyed this song as well as all the others. It was Difford's lyrics and Tilbrook's melodies that got to me, esp the part 'the cross on the wall is a permanent fixture'. Now with discovering bands on YT, I'm thinking Ultimate Squeeze would be a band like Pulp. Check out I Spy and Common People.

Everybody loves a reactor with a mind completely closed to a certain genre of music. Why not make it easy and just react to stuff you already know you like. I mean why challenge yourself to try something new. Just play the stuff you have on your personal playlist that way you don't have to worry about being challenged by music you don't ordinarily like.
