That "singer" is Paul Carrack. He sang this hit for Squeeze. He also sang How Long by Ace and, much later, In the Living years with Mike and the Mechanics. One of the great r&B singers of any generation.

This video is a gem. How i've not seen it before is beyond me. That camcorder was a damn good buy. Sound quality is excellent considering the age, when this video was originally uploaded and the difficulty of rendering sound from such camcorders into mp4 or whatever without it buzzing like crazy. Kudos!

How young they were :-) This is about a month after I *first* laid eyes on them at a record store in Atlanta. Paul didn't sing at the record store - he hid in the back and came out when it was time to get autographed CD's... and I cried. ;-)

Contrary to other comments...at 2:07 , Carrack doesn't "flub the line"...he's interpreting and control freak Glenn is "freaking out"...that's why they couldn't keep a great keyboard player when they got one....Don't get me wrong...I love Squeeze but could you imagine if this lineup produced another couple of albums !!! I think Glenn gave Paul no room to breathe and that is evident at 2:07....

WOW, I'd not seen Glen and Chris AND Paul freakin' Carrack together since the early 80's. Was there a tour with these guys together in the early 80s? With the other guys like Lavin, Holland..? If so, I missed one of my "dying to see" bands, with full lineup, or very close....Thank you very, very much for posting, and Great Performance!

Greg Hubbard -Paul rejoined the band briefly in ‘93 and was on the Some Fantastic Place tour with them. I saw them in Chicago on the tours - “Babylon and on” twice, “Frank”, “SFP” & “Play”. I loved Paul’s solo stuff from the 80s also.

Just a washcloth, but they're British, so....lol
@brettnelson3565
@brettnelson3565 Жыл бұрын
@ Cheryl Barry, 4 yrs. Later... if no one has ever told you what a flannel for your face is... I remember asking the same thing a couple of years back. So, what it means is... appearently in many European countries the motels, and hotels don't always have wash clothes in the bathrooms due to people stealing them all the time. I read somewhere that many of the hotels still have bidets next to the toilets to wash of you fanny after your done pooping. So the small towels in the bathroom are used to dry any remaining water off your rear end. Not anything you wanna use to wash your face. In the UK and other European countries they refer to a flannel for your face as something you take along with you to wash your face with while traveling around in European countries. Things may of changed tho in the last 3 decades or so when this song was written. I mean, hotel standards and whether they provide wash clothes. I lived in Germany from 1969 -1972 and did a fair amount of travelling around Europe. I remember back then you could never drink water from the taps in most places like France, Italy, and Spain, and many other countries. I was just a kid then but remember you could not drink anything that didn't come out of a bottle. Back then 50 years ago, they hadn't thought of bottling water except Perrier mineral water that used to come in a glass bottle, and was available everywhere, it sort of tasted like club soda water. But that was all you could really drink, soft drinks like Coca-Cola Perrier or wine. And almost all European countries served table wine even to children when you're dining out. And almost all European sort of like bed and breakfast places or penziones, always served a continental breakfast, usually croissants with marmalade, and Danish Pastry, and tea or coffee. You could only drink the water if it was boiled. I imagine in the modern world of today many of the European countries have upgraded their infrastructure but in 1970, it was only 26 years since the end of WWII. So, many Eu countries were still digging their way out, recovering from the war that plagued most of Europe in the first half of the 1900's two world wars and between Hitler and Stalling, Europe was in tatters for decades... France practiced dumping chamber pots out the windows, onto the cobblestone streets for well into the 50's, afterwards rebuilding and repopulating. So many men were killed, there was a shortage on skilled craftsmen. Anyway... that's what the meaning of a flannel for your face is. It used to be, when travling in Europe or the Uk, you always wanted to bring plenty of flannels wash clothes. And another thing about Uk, and Eu. Is that you do much more traveling on trains. The trains have private rooms you can relax and even lay down and sleep on long trips. So if you happen to be on a long train trip, there again, you wanna have a washcloth to wash up with in the trains bathrooms on long rides that last for days. Hope you see this even tho its been 4 yrs. since you posted your comment....

Great set. It was an icy afternoon that day and they played a really small venue here in Deep Ellum. They signed CDs here "Some Fantastic Place". I remember since it was Carrack's first time back in the band for over a decade, they did a cool version of Ace's "How Long" that night.
