Exactly, there comes a time when TIME becomes more valuable than money, I retired in September at 64. My wife and I are filling our 2024 calendar with "bucket list motorcycle trips as the clock keeps ticking. It seems we all have the same thoughts as we get older, as Rick Clunn (a professional Bass angler entering his 50th season in 2024) says "never think that your best days are behind you". Enjoyed the video.

I reckon at my age, 75, I was in the boredom phase. A buddy my age died and left me a note. Last bit read; try to enjoy all the time that you're given. So, I bought a BMW r1100rt. I was at the hardware store parking lot. An old guy was admiring my bike. He said he can't ride anymore at 80. I told him I was 75. He said, you got five years. We'll see. Cheers mate !!

Well stated Craig. I'm turning 60 in May. My retirement target has been 62, but 60 is working on me know. My wife and I are conscious that we are in our "go-go years" right now. We subscribe to the line from Shawshank Redemption, "You either get busy living, or get busy dying". We have our cross-hairs on the former! Thanks for the video.

63 laps around the sun. Five way bypass 12 years ago changed everything. I struggle to remain grateful to this day. However I must say when I stop and reflect just long enough to remember what’s really important, life becomes so much better. Just got home from 2099 mile ride with my pals. Next up some NOR CAL BDR stuff in October. I’m an adherent of The What’s Over There Let’s Go See mindset. Your topic is salient and your content is always relevant and on point. You’re kinda like a motorcycle riding sage. BRAVO!

Now, I‘m 57 and I search it all the time… but I still resist in watching videos from womans exploring the world on a mototcycle 😂 - yes, indeed -, while myself is sitting on the couch 😢 I hope something will find ME some day, because I gave up looking for it… Maybe there are people only watching videos, not able to hear the own „music“… Thank you for your wise and inspiring videos, Craig!

the one thing i notice getting older 57 now is how quickly time goes and it is over before you know it. You are so right and everything you have said has been going through my head over the last couple of years. Having had a heart attack 4 years ago i realised i am very lucky to still be here. i love getting out on the motorbike and next year i plan to travel around Europe, so yes squeezing the juice out of the lemon is what i plan to do

I made up a line, I believe it came to me in a conversation with someone that was confronting me about why I love such a dangerous activity as motorcycling at my age(which was many years ago, at this point)... I said: "living life is a great idea and nice to talk about, but riding a motorcycle is having a tool to actually do it". Now more importantly, is that a mummified hand ashtray with its dead middle finger stuck up at the world? 😎....

This year to Budapest HD 120th anniversary party and crossed 9 countries. By myself! Driving a car = moving your body,...Riding a bike = Moving your soul!!! Enjoy your free time and live!!!

I've been squeezing the juice since I was 12 years old. I'm chipping away at 63. At 11 I had two paper routes, had 4-6 lawn care jobs each week and washed cars in my neighborhood, when and where I could. I became a ski bum at 15 living and working up at Tahoe in the early 80s after HS. Then I became a logger, lived in an 8" trailer for two years with no electricity or water while I built my house from lumber that I logged and milled. Then I went to college the first time, dropped out of graduate school just before completing my first masters, and became a Dead Head. I went to dozens of concerts, reggae festivals and worked at a ski resort up at Tahoe again doing construction in the summers. Then I went back to college and got a teaching credential and a masters in education admin. Later I was a county commissioner. I got married late and had a daughter at 45. Now I live on 40 acres right on the US/CA border. My daughter is now in college. This year I bought an adventure motorcycle and a cargo trailer that I will do the buildout on. Then I'm off. I have three timber properties in two states. I'm selling them all. For now I still run my mill and fall trees. I still do handstands on my skateboard. I beat the fastest middle school student racing from one soccer goal post to the other and back my last year teaching, in 2019. I have campfires most nights for the past 40+ years, even when it is -20F, and I dance at the campfire most nights. It hasn't all been a blast. My best friend died playing frisbee with my then seven year old daughter. I gave him CPR for 42 minutes until the ambulance arrived, even though I knew he was dead. I've suffered loss and hardship like everyone else. I feel like my whole life has been a rocket ride, cram-packed with experiences and adventure. More to come.

Your thoughts Craig pretty much mirror my own. I turned 63 this past Sept and hope to be able to ride for some time. I lost my best friend and riding partner 2 months ago. He just up and dropped dead catching the bus to work. You just never know when your time is up. We had many great riding adventures and trips together all over both here in Canada and all over the US. That leaves me riding solo for now unless I find someone with the same kind of likes and riding style as myself.

Carpe Diem Yes indeed. About 6 years older than yourself, I find myself contemplating how I'll use my last '1/8th of a tank' (or now maybe 1/10th) and re-evaluating the bucket list. Wayne Dyer and Led Zeppelin. Two of my favorites. Read all Wayne's books and met him once in person. Last 2 years of High School ('72-'73) we would sometimes sing phrases from that same LZ II album to irritate our teachers. I can still do the OooooOooooo from _Whole Lotta Love_ when I'm in the right mood. 😎 Good one Craig 👍

My wife is 59 and I'm 55. She is being made redundant. Luckily we live in the UK so she will get a reasonably good payout and can start taking her pension early. We are considering me also releasing some money from my pension and paying off the mortgage. We may even sell the house and downsize to something smaller. So in the next few years I might be retired too as I can also start taking my pension early (typically in the UK the state pension is at age 67 but if you have a private pension you can start taking a reduced amount at 55). When younger I never wanted to retire. But now I am older and frankly starting to feel tired and jaded I am looking forward to it. I've just bought a cheap old bike and returning to riding after a few years gap. So I want to do some touring of the UK and Europe. Sadly my wife doesn't ride and doesn't have an interest in it. It would be wonderful if she wanted to join me touring.

My husband and I are not retired, but we squeezed that lemon when we were younger by living cheque to cheque in order to have nice motorcycles but I’m glad we did! We rode for many years and didn’t wait to do so « when we could afford it more »… we lived our lives and we are looking forward to many more years of doing so! 🤞👍

Great video. I lost my Dad when I was just out of my teens and that sent me on a trajectory of squeezing the lemon as much as I could. That included building a career and raising a family and now enjoying my first grandchild. But it also includes motorcycles, dirt bikes, mountain bikes, working out, hiking, camping, reading, making art, bad welding (really bad actually), pretending to be handy or at least having all the tools to be potentially handy, and spending a good deal of time with friends and family - the lemon can be squeezed in so many ways. I truly feel that every day is a gift, and I've told my family and close friends that if tomorrow was my last I've felt unbelievably fortunate to have had the time I did, but until that day - I want more and I'm heading out to get it (as soon as I can get off the sofa as I'm currently recovering from a tib/fib fracture from a dirt bike rally....going back to finish it in 2024) and can't wait to have the "bigger lemon press" available in a few short years when retirement finally arrives. I am confident that my days will be full just as yours are!

I retired in May of this year. I was told by a friend of mine that I would never be bored because I have lots of different skills. I also planned on doing things that didn't cost much. Like playing guitar. Like joining a bowling league. Like Kayaking and fishing. Like fixing small engines for friends. Like spending more time with my children and their kids. Like learning the piano. Or the banjo. Like riding my motorcycle. These are all many things I like to do that doesn't cost much. If you don't know what to do with yourself, try something new. You may not like it. But you won't know until you try. Eventually, you will find stuff you like to do. Hope this helps.

Well-said, Craig. Everyone is on a career path which leads to opportunities or requires recalibration. If you've had to recalibrate, take whatever opportunities to check off your bucket list no matter your age. It's as rare as hobby horse poop that someone at age 30 can travel the world without financial concerns to support that travel. The great advantage of motorcycles is you can explore at your pace without much physical effort and still enjoy the rigors of the environment. Our generation of Boomers have at least 2 decades of "juice" to be squeezed.

But still it feels like a parachute jump, I am nervous about taking that first step into retirement, I have a parachute on, but there's no way back...... still hope I have the courage to do the jump, I will be the first among my friends to do so ....

Thanks for the chat. I think once a person hits their 60's they start thinking about things like you discussed. Life is like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes. Don't let the old man in and enjoy every day. Big motorcycle trip coming in 2024; going out west with my co-rider/wife. We're both ready and really looking forward to it. Out west for us is leaving from OH. It'll be the longest motorcycle trip we've taken. Have done many in the SE US & Midwest all for shorter durations and miles. Take care.

Clint Eastwood and country-music singer Toby Keith were playing golf together at a Pebble Beach charity event. During the round of golf, Eastwood said to Keith: “I turn 88 on Monday.” Keith said, “What are you going to do?” Eastwood replied, “I am going to shoot a movie,” adding that filming was starting in two days. Keith said, “What keeps you going?” Eastwood replied, “I get up every day and don’t let the old man in.” Toby Keith wrote a song called Don't Let The Old Man In the Clint Eastwood used in his 2018 movie The Mule. Get up and go outside-don't let the old man in.

Far too many people have misguided ideas about what provides true 'satisfaction' out of life. As a result they focus obsessively on goals they've determined are more 'worthwhile' than other activities. The potholes of that approach is how sometimes their life becomes 'unbalanced', in that while significant effort is devoted to their goals, many important aspects of their lives are neglected. They do not become 'rounded' individuals. You see this approach all the time in people who focus on such things as their income and wealth accumulation, while such things as their family life and relationships with friends whither away. They fail to seek out opportunities for intellectual and emotional growth, or even character development, and as a result often become overly rigid, inflexible, and even selfish in how they view life. They may even become lazy in their approach to important issues in their lives, such as politics and national issues, defaulting to facile knee-jerk slogan fixes to complex problems. I think there is much evidence of this in our huge divides in society today. An intellectual approach is too frequently denigrated as 'woke culture' and dismissed for that reason alone, even when logic and evidence supports such an approach. Too many cave-in to divisive politics, rather than do the heavy lifting of actually looking into the issues, rather than the catch-phase politics so typically spouted by self-serving politicians. Life truly is about the choices people make, and about seeking a good balance in your life. Like many, I had several struggles and sacrifices in my early years, but now at 73 I look back at my decisions, my accomplishments, and my regrets, and there's not a lot I would have changed significantly. I am in a good place in many respects, and look forward to enjoying my accomplishments and the challenges that lay ahead.

Interesting subject which I would think most of us are in agreement with. Personally, I wold love to tour Europe on a motorbike however, as you have said, I can’t just go and blow the bank account for my own desires when there is a wife and children who will easily outlive me. I have been to Europe a few times with the Boss but always by car or public transport so it’s no biggy that the bike trip is unlikely. At 74, my chances of overseas touring is slim but I am in Australia and it is a big country so plenty of places to explore so my lemon juices will be spread here.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ― Mark Twain

One of the wisest men who ever lived was King Solomon. He was very wealthy. He lacked for nothing. He spent his whole life basically living in luxury looking for happiness . Solomon was doing basically what you suggest, "squeezing the life out of the lemon." Near the end of his life as he sat musing on things , he concluded with these words, " All is vanity". The wisest man who ever lived was completely stumped .He didn't have an answer.

From my understanding of Solomon--which is not great--he searched for happiness in things and riches, failing to find it. Squeezing the juice of life does not mean buying stuff. It means doing the things you love and being with the people you love. For me that is traveling on a motorcycle, but it can be many other things to many people. It is living life with openness, love, and acceptance.

Thanks for your reply Craig. I recommend that you read the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible. Go right to the last chapter. Chapter 12. And if you want a real challenge, turn to the back of the bible and read the last book. The book of revelations. Solomon died before he had a chance to read that one.

I'm turning 70 this month and I have been squeezing the lemon all my life. I am in great shape because I have been resistance training for over 48 years. I am planning a trip across country now for the next year on my Heritage. If you would like someone to ride with, just let me know. My videos shows a little about me.

Happy to meet up if our schedules coincide. Riding for long trips, that gets more complicated. I will check out your video.

My late mum used to tell me, when I was young: "Time goes by more quickly as you age". I thought she was losing her marbles, at the time. She was right. Apparently I didn't have any marbles yet.

@@jenkins1979 Yo, Jim! I live in Crystal lake. I do southern Wisconsin bike jaunts in the warm weather, and just today picked up a used 2018 BMW GSA 1200 for Arizona and/or Baja Mexico trips in the winter. Last time I rode in Mexico was in the late 1990's. I'm the same age as Craig in this video of his. So, I think all of us still have the chops to keep on riding! At least 'till I'm 90.
