Despite common belief, retirement takes more than financial planning. And while you may be beyond ready to go on permanent vacation, you also have to psychologically prepare for when the novelty wears off. Riley Moynes explains the four phases of retirement and offers a framework for how to avoid the inevitable pitfalls of taking it too easy in order to help you make the most of your golden years.

I hope I can get to phase one. I am 55 and my wife and I are very worried about the future. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, we are finding it impossible to replace it. My condolences to anyone like myself retiring in this crisis, it gets tougher by the day.

@Nate Carson I think it's especially difficult for retirees and near retirees, I know to focus on the long term but the anxiety when you're supposed to be retiring is exhausting. I wouldn't mind looking up your advisor please, I've been looking into hiring one as well.

@Nate Carson These FA's usually outperform and make great returns, my problem is their service charges are usually through the roof and take a reasonable portion of your returns. Is this the case with your FA too?

I medically retired from the military in my 30s, and even at that young age, his description of retirement is dead on accurate. I went through each one of these phases and I'm currently still on phase 3 years later. Here's to making it to 4!

I went right to phase 4. I knew the date of my retirement and I had a plan well in advance. I bought a guitar for my mind (now have 3), I bought a sea kayak, backpacking gear and a bike (now have 3). My plan was to be physically active, including 3 days pumping iron, so as to stand the best chance to stave off the long decline to where it would ultimately go. I'm still busy executing that plan 15 years after retirement.

I believe those phases applied as well to moms who have been raising their kids for years and when they are gone it seems like a retirement process for those mothers.

Best way to plan for retirement phases is to plan to teach and become a mentor to others..in jails, schools, in hospitals etc..share your wisdom acquired through life...not complicated...start a vegetable garden and swim everyday for health 😇

I've been saying since I was 20yrs. old , you have to have a hobby when you retire. Not one you can only do in one or two seasons. Ex: fishing, golf. 10 yrs. Before I retired, I realized you need at least two hobbies because your hobby becomes your job and everyone knows, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. I like your phase four because it gives you the opportunity to learn more , one should never stop learning, but there is something else for phase four, volunteerism. So you get self worth from helping those who need help, and continued joy of life that comes with that and you take the opportunity to learn new and wonderful things.

Hello. I'm sorry but I don't speak English so well to express my opinion about de video, so... continúo en Español. Sorry for my Language. I'm learning English as part of Fase 3. Greetings from Argentina. !!!

I am not a retiree, I am in my twenties. But, I don’t know how, But I feel like I have retired and going through these phases myself too. I gave up in some exciting career path earlier in my teens. And since then everything I do in my adult life is to somehow turn my way back to it. And make it to “Phase 4” Wish me luck

Everyone needs a purpose in life. Retirement to me is not retirement of work but retirement from the constraints of being employed by a company. For my retirement I strive for freedom from constraints but not freedom from responsibility or purpose. I see myself having a small niche business that I've dreamed of all my life but haven't had the time to fulfill. I don't ever see myself retiring from work just instead working to my own beat.

The video I watched was about retirement and talked about by Riley Moynes. Riley Moynes was a bit of an old-school presenter as he talked in a way where he would mention the present and then a bit of the past in story mode. He would also converse to the audience in a way where he would ask questions in a rhetorical way. I like that he did that as it made us think about what he was saying and it would lead us on to what he was gonna talk about later. He would also bring up some examples on the screen, showing evidence and proof of the details he talks about which exemplifies his argument of what he is trying to present. I think the body language was okay as there was some movement to the point it didn't feel like a monotone video. However, I feel like there could've been a bit more in order to capture the audience's attention and feel as if it was bland. I think there was a bit of lack of humour except for a bit in the video, but there were some multimedia which I think spiced up the presentation.

His presentation was fine, it works very well. We don’t need bells & whistles to be engaged, often a simple talk without a lot of elements is more impactful than those with a multimedia presentation.each has their place.

One needs much more than $$$ for a happy and 'successful' retirement. Neither does one need to do anything important or significan to anyone but yourself. My retirement started with a cross country move just as Covid became a thing. It was the best thing to happen and I am so thankful for Covid occurring. We were forced to find ourselves and our new location. It has been a great ride.

Why retire? Get a job/run a business you love where you can work until you drop. That's what I'm doing. Screw "permanent vacation." It's boring. The longest I've ever been able to tolerate doing nothing is less than two weeks. Yeah, you could just do a hobby, but do like I do, and make it one where people willingly pay you to do it for them!

Studies have shown that the people who live the longest & healthiest are those who either retire early or work till they drop. Early retirees typically have found something they really love and want to do more of, and “never retirees” are typically already doing something they love. It’s the people who’s retirement means they lose their primary purpose in life are the ones who die early in retirement.

Because things happen where you are still living but unable to work. You need to prepare for that rather than assuming that your work will continue and then you die right away. Gerontologists know this is rare.

Sounds like SOMEBODY should have spent more of his life finding meaning somewhere OTHER than at his JOB. Work is not the be-all and end-all of life, dude. Sorry it took you and your generation until retirement to figure that out, now sit down and shut up with your complaining about younger generations figuring it out sooner.
