Squid fishing 101; basic casting and retrieving methods to maximize Egi lure appeal.

On today video; i will attempted to instruct new and season angler how to cast Egi or squid jig effectively.
My personal observation multiple video about fishing squid are made over the years but non cover the basic tutorial how to effectively work the Egi or squid jig. Most of the video are short and or only cover one type of basic retrieve. This put new angler or one wanting to start fishing at a very strong disadvantage because limited knowledge, thus leaving probability of catching base on luck alone.
Squid jig retrieve can be generally classified into two main type hopping and darting.
Hopping retrieve intended to mimic the movement a shrimp or ebi in water.
Darting retrieve mimic darting bait fish such as horse mackerel or big eye mackerel.
Two retrieve have their own merits. Hopping will cover more water column in the vertical space. Darting cover a wider area on the water.

do you connect the mainline to the leader directly or do you use a swivel?

When connecting the main PE line to an FC leader, it’s best not to use a swivel. I primarily use the PR knot for this connection. The goal is to control the presentation of the Egi as much as possible, so a swivel isn't necessary. However, if you are fishing in strong currents, using a swivel may be beneficial.

How deep do you let it sink?

The best depth for fishing squid depends on the topography of your fishing area. It's important to experiment to find where the squid are gathering. I recommend a depth of 4 to 8 meters. Let your squid jig sink about two-thirds of the way down; for a standard 2.5 jig, it sinks at a rate of 1 meter every 5 seconds. Wait and count for 20 to 30 seconds. You can also let it sink to the bottom, but keep in mind that this increases the likelihood of getting snagged.
