That's actually *common to Asian cultures in general* (and not just to Koreans), where the *notion of a mortal challenge* (be it a death game or a duel to the death/mortal combat) is already a *familiar trope in storytelling in that part of the world.* So "Squid Game" is really a symptom of that wider kind of "mythology". *I speak Vietnamese* myself, where *death games* or a *mortal challenge* would be called "thí mạng", from two Chinese characters: 試 命, that literally mean *"test of fate".*

Info : all guns are banned in south korea so south koreans Immediately know that gun is a fake one. SNU is Seoul National University and it is a top university in S.korea like Harvard. 1$ is approximately 1000 south korean won and you can drop 3 zero. So 1000000(1m) won is 1000$ And in Korean sound track it said “you’ll be out of the game if you move” so word “eliminated”is not a perfect translation.

I started thinking about how it would feel to be the last one standing and to be the one who won the money. I would feel chronically depressed. Because so many people died for me to be rich. But if i ended myself because of the depression, then the lives and what i went through would’ve been wasted. Such a moral delimma would be going on.

I discovered Korean dramas and movies a year ago and 95% of what I watch now is Korean or Chinese tv shows, dramas and movies. Personal story: I was visiting family in Korea, did a tour while there. One night we stayed at a casino hotel. They wouldn't let anyone in if they had alcohol in their system, and every single room had signs and pamphlets about gambling addiction. I talked to one of the guards about only having a glass of wine with dinner, etc. They didn't care, no entry because they've had gambling addicts commit suicide by jumping out an upper level window because while drunk they gambled away their kid's college fund, or lost their house, etc. Gambling addiction is taken pretty seriously there.

Great reaction guys. Yes bit of a slow start, but bear with it because they are giving you a bit of information how the main character Seong Gi-Hun got into his situation and his serious gambling addition, being a bum and taking his mother for granted, but a genuine love for his daughter and vice versa. I think culturally the S.Koreans are more trusting and didn't think they were going to die, it being a kids game. Interesting your comment on the game in the beginning wondering if it will be played somewhere or at the end - guess you'll have to wait and see.🤷🏾‍♀️ I think we watched it nearly two weeks ago over 2 days - instantly hooked. I won't give away any spoilers. Trust me, it keeps on getting better.

How i interpreted the terms. Is you can leave without penalty before any games begin. But once you're in, when a current game is active you can't decide to back out during it. Subsequently, whenever a game isn't being played you can leave only if the majority of remaining participants decide to end the entire series of games.

It just hit me: When the daughter opens the gift box and finds the gun inside, one of the guys (and I've seen other reactors say the same thing) said, "Why is a gun in a kids game?" It hit me that the players are playing with danger (the gun) in a kid's game (Squid Game)
