I am a South African in England and I agree with what he says at the end. The media is brutal, I really don't think it helps the sports teams here. It's not just rugby it's all sports, the amount of pressure they pile on is crazy. I thought England played very well until that blip at the end. I think if the media laid off and that team is allowed to build they'll be good
@hsmedsvikСағат бұрын
All teams sub the flyhalf at some point, especially if you have 3 BIG games in 3 weeks. And Ford scored the most drop goals of the RWC 2023 and media is talking like he is a chocking choice.

I am a South African who also lived in England for 11 years... And their media is undoubtedly their Achilles heel for EVERYTHING - not just sport. Their media is squarely to blame for (amongst other things) Boris Johnson becoming Mayor of London AND Prime Minister (both resulting in a downward spiral)... for Brexit even being a thing (let alone being voted for)... for the Nanny State culture... for the pressure on their politicians to resign over any little thing (leaving the House of Commons with lower and lower quality over the decades)... and just the general negativity in that country. It's the worst "media" (propaganda of billionaires) in the world.

Well said gents! This was a fantastic game with continual shifts and twists. I loved how both teams persisted in playing their new styles but were happy to slip back into their tried and tested tactics to withstand a bit of pressure or dominance from their opponent. I thought SA were lucky but they made the most of their luck (something they haven’t always done.) I enjoyed the game… and then I rage quit halfway through the first question put to Genge! He was asked “What is going wrong (for England)…” These guys work damn hard to represent England and do the country proud, only to be treated like naughty schoolboys! It’s nonsense. I am a SA supporter by the way.

I completely agree about the English media, they’ve been atrocious and needlessly vicious. Players and coaches are human, they get subconsciously influenced by the low-hanging fruit narratives. I wish media spent more time analyzing the actual rugby of it all. Which, Robbie and Will - yall have been spoiling us with so much amazing content, keep it up and it’s much appreciated!!

🇿🇦. I completely agree that England is a bloody good team and extremely close to being a dominating world-beating team - even if the Boks, AB's, French and Ireland are definitely a step ahead of them. Australia is looking very promising (high time), but a few swallows does not make a summer ...yet. But writing off a team that lost two games by the smallest of margins (AB's and Australia) is purely an emotional reaction. We can't tell exactly which way the pendulum will swing, but it's quite possible that the Roses will make it to a RWC semi or final once again.

If my grandmother had wheels she would be a bike. NZ, Aus and RSA had bounces of the ball go against them too in those games. I don’t think it’s an issue with the bounce of the ball. Really, I think it’s the bench. Why not have Finn Smith instead of a Ford? Ben Curry to replace Underhill? Make Underhill go full steam for 50 minutes? So many questions on selection and rotation in the squad.

An important point on JvP's charged down box kicks: England skipper, George, asked about EE being offside. Ref conveyed that TMO checked and EE was onside because the ball at the base of the ruck wasn't under the leg of the last man in the ruck immediately before JvP lifts it, so when JvP had hands on the ball at the base thinking he had a moment to compose himself before kicking, the ball was already out. After this was explained, there were no further charge downs. If you go to 14:19 in this vid and play at 0.25 speed, you can actually see JvP move the ball giving it half a twist on the ground so he can pick it up unimpeded by George's leg. But the unimpeded path for him to pick it up is exactly because it is no longer under George's leg and so it is out and play on. Looking at this you can also see EE's timing is just about perfect. (When watching this live, I thought EE was offside. Shockingly, sometimes the refs get things right.) Now, as Squidge noted, it is likely that SA studied JvP's process to box kick to maximise their chances of charging him down. Why, of why, would JvP and his coaches not be aware of the risk of being charged down by anyone of EE, PSDT, RGS? The fact that JpV was able to adjust after the two charge downs says that he knew how to adjust before the first charge down, but didn't because the risk wasn't properly assessed.

I get what your saying about England being on the verge, but it also seems to me that if you take out Marcus from this team, what have England got? They don’t score any tries against New Zealand, all of the tries in the Australia game are from smith grabbers or smith line-breaks. And this game he caused the first. What other top team do you look at and go without this one player they wouldn’t have scored 3/4 of their tries, France? No Dupont played pretty average in attack and they still scored a few against NZ New Zealand? No, Springboks? No Ireland? No It seems like their entire attack i just bits of smith brilliance. And one player just isn’t enough to win these games, especially as in the 6 nations teams are undoubtedly going to be analyzing him pre game and not letting him play.

In the last 20 minutes England had a series of 3 entries in the 22, covering roughly 10 phases. All gave away pens, turnovers or dropped balls. In not one of them did Smith actually touch the ball. All ended in mistakes at the ruck, and 2/3 started with a dodgy set-piece. I would like to see more of a desire to create opportunities for the backs. That quick tap penalty in the last 78 from Smith is a great example - born of pure desperation (as we needed 2 scores in 2 minutes). Yet no other player was thinking about going quickly and giving it a go. Similarly, we had a turnover earlier in the game, and one forward passed to another to truck it up. England have the players to play loose when it is on, but seem to lack the desire, particularly in the last 20 where the forwards seem to tired to keep up, and only Smith seems to want to go for it. I don't know if this is player decision-making, coaching tactics and strategy, or just tiredness (that blitz defence is more tiring) but it feels like we make more mistakes in play, and have less ambition during those last 20 minutes - even against NZ and Aus where we did have chances to win.

What you seemed to not mention in this video is England has played 65 mins against the most physical team on the planet in which they’re loosing. In this scenarios it’s easy to go into panic mode. Nothing to do with Ford not coming on. Aside from that. You’re incredible !

Sorry, I'm a Patreon and normally agree with you but to say that it's the Big Bad Media who made England lose is daft. If Borthwick and the English players are really that affected by the media, then they're not up to playing international rugby. You'll always be criticised, you need to be strong enough to rise above it. Borthwick not bringing on Ford even though he probably wanted to because he was scared of public reaction is alarming and it's him, not the media, who should be criticised for it

How are you blaming Smith for the forwards not fronting up and the backs making simple handling errors in the last 15? If anyone is blame for the team losing focus it has to be the captains and the pack leaders, surely taking off your captain and leaders in the last 20 is far more of an impact than whether Ford or smith is at 10, Smith has managed the game well up until then
