I remember an episode where spongebob & Patrick were playing in a box & squidward hears noises supposedly coming from the box & when he opens it, he asks ‘how were you two making all that noise?’ And spongebob immediately asks ‘what noise?’ And later in the episode squidward comes into the box with them & asks them to take him to robot pirate island but all spongebob & Patrick do is close their eyes & make robot & pirate noises.

What about the band episode? It shows squidward loving music and trying to teach others, and when he is pinned by drumsticks, he does say "too bad that didn't kill me" He also seems a lot happier, even more than spongebob when his rival is outdone and his friends play so well. Also, what about the happiest day episode? He proclaims to never have a happiest moment and it always seems to be ruined by spongebob even though he is just trying to help his friend. In the end, his happiest moment is destroying a bunch of cardboard spongebob while maniacally laughing

"Art Unknown" is an episode kind of all about this. Squidward starts an art class and the only one to show up is Spongebob. Squidward straight up starts the class by making him recite that Squidward is talented while Spongebob has none. But he makes it very clear he isn't that good, while Spongebob outperforms him constantly with no effort with pieces ranging from origami puppetry to Renaissance-level artwork, and Squidward constantly goes from jealously gushing to straight up berating him, saying it's "not art" and trying to bring him down to his level, and the one time he actually admits Spongebob is talented was because he was trying to take credit for a statue Spongebob made and needed him to recreate it. But Spongebob will only recreate Squidward's sub-par pieces from before, which sends him into a rage where he destroys the classroom (with the added closing joke that Squidward accidentally recreated the statue amongst the chaos) In fact, that could play into his narcissism being just as much a destructive factor. It's like the Dunning-Kruger effect (where your own confidence in your abilities is what prevents you from improving). Squidward almost exclusively creates art pieces *of himself*, and even in "Art Unknown" he sticks a Squidward nose onto Spongebob's statue and only then called it "art". But most people usually criticize his art, and the art museum owner who appeared in "Art Unknown" even said that the Squidward nose was the only flaw. But he HAS created impressive stuff once or twice, but they weren't self-portraits (like the recreated statue at the end), so it's possible that Squidward DOES have genuine artistic skill and potential, he's just too full of himself to actually use that talent, sort of an exaggeration of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

While it’s not really related to his clarinet or art, the episode Squid’s Day Off shows more of Squidward hallucinating about Spongebob. Not only does he hear a tree scratching a window as Spongebob’s laughter, but he constantly imagines Spongebob destroying the Krusty Krab. Perhaps Squidward imagined this to reinforce the delusion he has that he’s the sane one and Spongebob is insane.

Squid Noir fits perfectly! Everyone tells Squidward he's horrible at playing his clarinet, he takes a nap, wakes up to find his clarinet missing, and goes crazy. The whole world becomes black and white and Squidward pretends to be a detective and plays detective looking for his clarinet, he then finds it and plays it for Jellyfish. I think you should watch it, it really goes with this theory well.

idk if this has already been posted but when you see the episode where squidward is allowed to play at a concert (and the episode where patrick breaks his butt) you can see throughout his process of writing the performance he is going insane, first few minutes he looks normal even with spongebobs antics right around the corner. Next few hours with spongebob not stopping you can see squidward breaking farther and farther away from the hinge of reality and sanity, there is an entire timelapse where you can see him go insane from the work and the noise. The only thing that seemed to bring him back was the completion of the song giving him a shred of sanity so he could perform. Its a small thing but it goes to show how correct this really is.

Awesome theory! Once again! This and the ones with Patrick and Plankton I'm a huge fan of! I recently rewatched the episode Squidville, and when looking at this theory I have pondered. In the episode, he thinks he's finally found the paradise and perfection he's always wanted when he moves to Squidville. At first he's happy being surrounded by people with lifestyles that are pretty much common copies of himself. - Then, he becomes bored of it all and starts playing with a reef blower just like Spongebob and Patrick. At the end of the episode, he blasts off and flies away on the reef blower, laughing hysterically, shouting "FREEDOM!" If he's that tied up to his art and own way of life, why does he snap when his sources of insanity (Patrick more than Spongebob, as stated in this video) are removed? Intriguing... There have been several times when it's hinted at that Squidward actually cares about Spongebob. In "Dying for Pie" he's overcome with guilt when he thinks he may have killed him and decides he's going to give him his best last day ever, going through the craziest, most embarrassing, even harmful of activities to make him happy ("I'll make sure he'll have so much fun that he drowns in it! Ha ha! Drowns in it!!!" Also, in the hash slinging slasher episode, when faced with a near death experience, Squidward tells him "No matter what I've said, I always kinda liked you!" This adds another layer of strange fascination to this theory. Like Squidward subconsciously knows Spongebob is a victim too or something?

Ashla Icebreaker most likely the reason is dissolved in the squidville episode is because he might have grown a dependence to his neighbours despite them being his stress cause...he NEEDS them to provide something else in his life....he doesnt want life to become monotonous....to become boring....he's grown addicted to the irrational which only grows as the series continues....but too much of the high sends him into a sort of insanity.....he needs balance of sanity and insanity....something the art and music provide and something spongebob and patrick provide

I love the twist on the intro. It really sets the mood. I have found some evidence. I will keep updating it, do keep checking back. I may have updated it. Evidence: The one I can think off the top of my head is in SB-129. Squidward refuses to talk or play with spongebob, so he sneaks out and freezes himself. He gets stuck in the freezer for 2000-ish years. Maybe that’s another day-nightmare/dream? Idk It’s the next day and I have thought of another.There is a fairly new episode which is around 80% in black and white. It’s got the theme of a 1950’s mystery show. It is called ‘squid noir’. The plot is squid wards clarinet is stolen. It suddenly turns black and white and he and spongebob team up together. He questions a bunch of people he annoyed with his Clarinet. (Mr krabs, bubble bass, spongebob, Patrick) and when he finally finds his clarinet, with the jellyfish, it turns colourful again. Maybe he went a bit insane when he lost his clarinet and he got to grips with reality after he found it. Notes: Guys I just found this out!!!! On the episode squid noir, in the premier for that episode(squid noir) the ending was ALTERED!!!! They had a bunch of kids colour in scenes and then they placed them together, with the names in the left corner and it looks really colourful. It’s looks like he went insane again. If you go on Wikipedia, type in spongebob squarepants s10, then scroll down to ‘episodes’, go to the episode named ‘squid noir’ and then there is a link to see the premiere ending. I have just been looking, and I found that squidward might be on antipsychotic medication. Some side effects are ‘seeing with a brown or black and white tint.’ It could be a regular occurrence as we barely ever see episodes from squidwards eyes, so maybe he is. I’m sure seeing different colours would be as well. Antipsychotic disorders can be used to treat many things, but the ones I think squidward might be on them for are: OCD(not likely but maybe), Anxiety(probably), depression(likely) sndPTSD(maybe the years spent around spongebob finally got to him. I’m not sure) Anyone have any other thoughts?

I have watched Spongebob when I was younger and while I can't recall and/or confirm that Squidward has had the arts tied to his life (in fact I think he's just a suffering artist trying to find some meaning and success in life), I can confirm that both Patrick and Spongebob have been intentionally driving Squidward insane. In the episode where Spongebob's pineapple is eaten by nematodes, Squid asks Sponge if it was time to ruin his day, Patrick then questions the same thing asking Spongebob to not start without him. This would mean Patrick and Spongebob have been intentionally antagonizing Squidward to where his day is ruined.

I'm not sure if this counts, but Squidward's entire character arc in the Spongebob musical on Broadway, is that he needs to play his clarinet for all of Bikini Bottom, and that's all he cares about, and when he's told he's a loser and can't play, he hallucinates himself playing with a sea anemone backup

In the episode laugh box, this REALLY brings out the insanity of Squidward towards the end of the episode he goes through this mental state of SpongeBob laughing at him, as his eyes go blood shot he breaks through the wall laughing as SpongeBob.

What stand out to me is the episode *Christmas Who?* Particularly the ending scene. Squidward finds a message and looks up to the sky and either sees or hallucinates that Santa Clause is there. *Santa:* Dear Squidward, thanks for all your help! You've been a real good boy this year. Warm regards, Santa Claus. [letter disappears into thin air] Ho, ho, ho! Ho, ho, ho! [in his sleigh flying] Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho. Merry Christmas! Ho, ho, ho, ho, ho. Ho, ho, ho, ho. [does a crazy dance while saying his "ho ho ho"] **Squidward: Yup, I'm insane** [plays his wooden clarinet in the ending tone of the episode] Its so odd he just call him insane and the first thing he does because of it is play his fake clarinet. - I assume he hallucinated the letter and Santa so he wouldnt have to deal with the emotional consequences of giving away nearly everything he owns. Then he comforts himself with the clarinet to not have to deal wit the emotional trauma of realizing he’s actually allowing himself to go insane (again possibly) Also Im suprised you didn’t bring up he felt the need to give it a name- “Clarey” I remember. That’s what kids do with stuffed animals.

Like I've said on another comment, Squidward may have paranoia, as he has always been annoyed at SpongeBob and Patrick, but sometimes he had nightmares about Patrick and SpongeBob. Like the episode you talked about before, it seems Patrick especially makes him extremely scared and anxious. In another episode he finally has a friend he relates to, and he goes to very extreme measures to protect them from SpongeBob and Patrick. Like you said, Squidward has severe depression, anxiety and addiction.

I feel like squidward could also be dependant on the antics of spongebib and Patrick. An example of this is when he had a full on breakdown in the squid village where things were supposedly "perfect" for him. But eventually he came to miss them and went even more insane than when he was with spongebib and Patrick. It seems that spongebob keeps his Psychopathy in check to a point. Just a thought on the psychological relationships between them. Might not be true, but hey, gotta try.

May I just say something real quick, I am not sure but it seems when Spongebob goes through pain or when Patrick goes through pain, Squidward is over joyed by this. It seems like the clarinet and painting may not be his only outlet. Another instance of other outlets may be in the episode where Squidward tries his first Kraby Patty, he gets this obsession over the taste of it and starts to eat the Kraby Pattys in surplus. Later in that same episode, he consumes Spongebob. That's just something I noticed... maybe Squidward has more insanity then we first thought?

AJ Bergstrand Whenever Squidward isn’t in a state of ahedonia (can actually feel enjoyment/pleasure from something) he indulges in it in excess often to the point it actually back fires and hurts him because he’s not use to feelings of pleasure- at least not in his adulthood. Examples would be what this video is about (art and music), your example of Krabby patties, and I think another good example of this is snowball fighting. In the episode *Snowball effect* he initially tries to initiate another snowball fight between Patrick and Spongebob because he enjoys the idea of them getting hurt in the process. Later he hits spongebob with a snowball and is suprised he feels excitement and says he’s “never felt so alive” then he goes off the deep end and crazily pelts spongebob and patrick with hundreds of snowballs (one of them having his clarinet in it) until spongebob and patrick decide to escape the situation. Once he loses energy and the two are clearly gone, he goes insane building that snow fort and obvious over does it. In the end of the episode he’s left laughing maniacally with himself throwing snowballs at no one. Another episode is when he moves away to tentacles acres and enjoys himself he eventually hates it then goes crazy playing with that leaf “reef” blower and we all know that insane ending
