2/23/20 update: I played the Squier at 2 gigs yesterday... sounded good, played good, but the pickups don't have the output of my Fender Jazz MIM. Pleasantly surprised that it sounded good when I slapped and popped. Comfortable bass to play.

Hi, I’d recommend you turn the bass volume up during the feature. You want to feature the bass! Awesome vid tho!!!

I have this exact bass in this color. Bought on CL for about $120; it was like new. Love it. I did a setup at home: straightened neck with truss rod, set string heights on bridge. Had to lower pickups quite a bit because strings hit them when slapping. Output is as loud as my active basses. Strings are thinner gauge than on my other basses so it takes a couple minutes getting used to them, they move a lot more. But it makes for easy vibrato. So far it seems to stay in tune. My only concern is the output jack; there's no nut holding it on so I wonder how secure it is. For years I avoided Squiers because they weren't made in U.S. My thinking has changed about that! 20 years ago I bought a 2000 Fender American Jazz Deluxe V made in U.S. Still have it, still as solid as when I bought it.

Great playing Steve. I really like the Fender Squier line of bass guitars. I have a vintage modified Precision Bass that like your affinity has the additional single coil pickup in the bridge. I also recommend the newly revamped Classic Vibe line by squier. I have the 60s precision bass and it is a great sounding instrument. The bass line you crafted at the end is wonderful to listen to. The use of syncopation lends itself to a jazz or maybe even more of a finger style funk feel. It certainly could be used in a hard rock setting as well. Great job

Thanks! The Squier basses have come a long way haven't they Don? I remember I had a 5 string Squier back in the early 2000s and the pickup output was pretty bad. Never thought I'd get another Squier but I played this one on a whim at the Guitar Center and was pretty impressed, especially at this price point. For $159 ya can't go wrong.

@@stevekonbass You are right on, my first ever bass was a squier affinity p bass that I got new late 1999/early 2000 and it was brutal. Tone pot didn’t provide a gradual roll up or down, frets were bed and the pickup really thin sounding. Those are gone, the stuff beginners, intermediate, and even pro players can get for 200-500$ is a ridiculous value. I still am going to get an American made Fender at some point but I love how squier gives you the same look and sound of their classic guitars.

My main bass is a 2000 made in Mexico Jazz Bass. Plays great. In the last year I've played some Americans at the Guitar Center and wasn't too impressed. Don't know if they've taken a step back or maybe the ones I played just weren't up to par. My MIN still plays great after 20 years: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKmXf4Sgp7GGqqc

Great content brother. Could you merge both styles together? Both are good, 1st ones like a smooth jazz and the 2nd is a rock feel. You could make the verses smooth jazz and chorus rock. The bridge you could merge the 2 together. Going out you could just rock it out with the smooth jazz support.

Thanks. That's an idea. I'm partial to the heavy but the smooth jazz works too. I tried it as a smooth jazz instrumental thing here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lYLNZX6tepZ0nK8

Hi. Steve just wanna ask, does it produce noise when your hands are not in contact with the strings while the volumes are on? Anyway nice demo mate, waiting for your response. \m/
@stevekonbass
@stevekonbass 4 жыл бұрын
No it doesn't, but that happens sometimes. Then when you touch the strings it stops right? That's a ground thing. Normal, but can be annoying. I can get that playing at one club and then go to another club and there's no noise at all.

steve what ya think of short scale bass
@stevekonbass
@stevekonbass 2 жыл бұрын
Short scale basses are fine. The only difference with them and long scale basses is the distance from the nut (where the headstock meets the neck) to the bridge. With "short scale" the distance is smaller which results in a shorter neck and the frets are closer together. People with smaller hands might find them easier to play. I own 1 short scale and I love playing it. It's a Hofner Igniton Club Bass. It took a minute to adjust to it being I was used to playing "long scale" basses. I like this particular bass for the sound and low end. It gets a "rootsy" sound to it which I think is great for early rock 'n' roll and blues. Here's a few videos I did with it if you'd like to check this particular one out: how it sounds recorded: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hX2ug3qDmdyaitU review of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/omjXqIl7Zs6GodE used live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6Kkf5-Pnpp-g9U Of course there are other brands that make "short scale", but for me I would probably only use this one although there is a "short scale" Guild I would like to try one day.
Why is a Fender bass so much more than Squier? (And is it worth it?)
