As an owner of both American and Asian made basses I can say that the biggest difference isn't the sound to me! It's the playability and feel that puts the American made ahead! I don't just have cheap Asian basses either!

I know that all the basses sounds different. But I can't stop on being amazed of how similar is the sound of all of them. I mean, for 300 bucks (Squier VM) you can get a pretty nice tone, considering that the next best option could be a Fender Deluxe that cost almost 1300 bucks.

I've had my Squier JB since Christmas and it doesn't disappoint with how warm and bright it sounds. Even when not plugged in I could practice a song or two and hear every note, though when plucking with my fingers it tends to sound inconsistent this way. After setting the intonation as best I could things do sound better overall, but that's regarding the strings it came with so chances are I'm barely scratching the surface.

I recently purchases the Olympic white 5-string Squier Vintage Mod JB and the quality just amazed me. I ordered the Squier VM fretless JB and I just can't wait to have it. Just to keep things straight, it's the closest to Fender you'll ever get without spending too much money. To be honest, I find the Vintage Mod series even more defined in the hi-ends, just a bit more clarity. Really love the tone on those. Good comparison, thanks for sharing!

Thanks for your comment. They sound different, because the fenders in this video have a rosewood neck, and the squier has a maple neck. So it would be nice if they used a squier vm with rosewood neck. Rosewood has a warmer and deeper sound to it as maple, wich is much brighter.

I've been playing bass for over fifty years and I own a Squier 5 string active and a 4 string MIM. I've played and listened to the thousand dollar Fenders and cannot tell the difference in a blindfold test. In a way, having a more expensive bass is a status symbol, and I say if you can afford it, or can tell the difference, then go for it. The Fender/Squier basses have the Fender sound and there are other basses that have a unique sound, like a Ken Smith and a few others. My primary bass is a Carvin and it's about a two thousand dollar bass and I love the sound of it. To me the thing about a bass guitar is how it feels to me, then a great amp will give me the sound I want. I also play upright, but mostly use the Ampeg electric upright, now there's a unique sound.

I've been playing for 31 years and I own 5 Squier model basses, all Vintage modified series which I prefer of that brand. They are great basses for the money and with a good quality amp and a competent player they are an awesome bass. I play gigs with the first first bass he demonstrated, the 70s vintage modified jazz bass. It is my main go-to bass now and has been for about 7 years, it replaced my "old reliable" 83 Jazz bass that I've owned since new. I just don't want to lug the 83 Fender around anymore risking banging it up or somebody stealing it. I've had it so long now its a family heirloom that I plan to pass on to one of my kids one day. I'm 50 now and I know I'm not super old but old enough to know that my time is number here on earth! I'm hoping when my kids give me some grandchildren (none of them play) there will be a bassist among them to play it.

I really can’t relate to what you wrote. My band members didn’t know that I switched basses (from an American to a cheaper model), but midway through the rehearsal, a couple of them told me that the bass sounded different. When I told them that it was a cheaper model, the leader told me to please bring back the American. There is a big difference that not only I can tell but also my band members. Either you never acquired the ear or just never cared.

The skill of the player is by far #1 in determining what the instrument and equipment produce.You can't play badly on a fine bass guitar and an excellent amp and expect it to turn into great playing.An average bass guitar and amp in the hands of someone excellent will sound excellent.That being said,if you need to fill a large area with nice clear sound from your bass,a crappy little amp will not do it.A good amp and speaker or speakers will do the trick.Some instruments have great sustain and that is enhanced when played through be a really good amp.If your a bad bass player,new and better equipment won't transform you.If your good to excellent,you might want an instrument that helps express the sound you hear in your minds ear.Price doesn't necessarily determine which instrument is right for that nor does vintage.The same with amps.A tube amp might be right for some and wrong for others.A speaker cab with 2- 10" speakers alone would be wrong for me but one with a single 15" would be fine.For others it's the opposite.Get what matches your idea of what sounding right is.Different bass players have different ideas about that and you can take ten excellent bass players and find ten different views on what sounding right is.All of them are correct.All can do a fine job on a song with there 10 different approaches.Go with what you feel sounds good.

OK. the obvious difference was the maple neck vs. rosewood. Other than that the American Basses seemed to have a bit fatter more round tone that the squire basses. The squire basses had a bit flatter yet more treble tone not quite as deep as the American basses, ascetically there is very little difference and Price wise a huge difference. I have owned both American and squire Basses and 6 string guitars, and Mexican made too. I have to say the American made do have a better "Feel" to them, they feel a little more solid, the frets feel "finished" and sound a bit better, but I have owned several squires and what I do is drop some EMG's in the Bass and 6 string guitars and they sound great while saving 500-600 plus dollars.!!!!! Rock On.

The Squier basses have a surprisingly good tone and are very nice inststruments for the money. Still MIM (at least from the classic series upwards), MIJ and MIA Fender basses have a more sophisticated tone to them. It's like having a 10 year old Single Malt and an 18 year old. They both can be great but as an expert you're gonna find more nuances in the latter one.

The 1st batch of Japanese Squires that came out in the 80s were excellent. But in time it became pretty hit or miss hence some of Squire's bad rep. But I have to say, bang for buck, some of these Squires are simply fantastic. With a good setup, you're set. A pickup and/or hardware upgrade here and there and you'll be even better and still on the cheap.

Nice comparison! The P Basses all sounded pretty similar...not too surprising with the lower tones from the split pickups. They don't play the same. The J Basses sounded quite a bit different. The Squier Modified had a very bright tone...If the volumes and tone control were the same on all, cheaper strings could account for that. The 'Special' sounded similar to the Squier. The American J had a nice rich sound...again, if all three had the controls set the same, the stock strings could account for the difference. I'm sure the American Standard comes with better strings...and better electronics of course. I've played all of these and have to say that the Squier Vintage Modified has the nicest feel/playability for me. Fantastic bass for the cost. I've played no less than ten of them, and they all feel the same. Very sturdy and easy to play. Not a big fan of the gloss neck. I can't say that for the Fenders. The Americans, some feel good, others feel cheap. All the MIM's I've played feel cheap. I wouldn't go there.

I bought an American Ultra Precision Bass. When running it through an Amp with some bass (unlike the amp/speaker settings that was used in the video), the sound and the feel are worlds apart when comparing it to a Squier. Just go to a music store and do a comparison using a good amp/speaker system. If you can’t tell the great difference in every regard then you must not know a lot about basses or what quality sounds like.

There's nothing wrong with the sound of the Squier VM Jazz at all. I've had a few Mexican Jazz basses, and a couple of Japanese P basses, but still turn to my 2002 Squier P Bass Special if I want a P or J sound....great sounding and playing bass

There is variability in the quality even among MIAs. But they are the most consistent. If you look hard enough you can find good Squires.

Yep, even if you turn done the tone on the bass and a little more less volume on the bridge pick up, it can sound the same as a Fender MIM/USA. I recently spent time on setting up my Squire VM, it now plays like butter, I love it.

Not much difference between em. I think the Squier could use a better setup. Too much string buzz. At least more than the other two making it hard to differentiate. Also pickup height variations?
@GeroLubovnik
@GeroLubovnik 6 жыл бұрын
Change the strings on the Squier and upgrade the pickups for $120 and see which horse wins this race. UPDATE: Listening a second time and I think I may even prefer the Squier Jazz Bass. Squier is developing quite the reputation in the bass world because it is so good for so little money. $300 for the bass and $150 for top flight pups and you're still hundreds ahead for a better sounding bass.

His point being that the bridge pickup on the 70's jazzes are about 1/2" closer to the bridge. The squire is supposed to represent those basses and it's lacking in that department...

Here lies the issue, do you have the ability to hear the difference? If you don’t, do you have the ability to feel the difference with regard to the ease of playing? If you don’t, you will realize the difference in about ten years when parts start wasting away, and people will offer you 1/3 of the price you paid for it new when you attempt to sell it. After 40 years you will have paid for three or four basses, ultimately paying the same for an American which will still perform well after 40 years.

Taking the plastic off the pickups would help. Anyway, the Squiers are great but people think they can upgrade by changing the pickups. Here's a hint...play the Squier unplugged. It has a sound. That sound remains when plugged in. Moral of the story -- even if you change the pups, it will not be a "solid" as a MIA Fender. Leave it alone. They're fine. I especially like the 70's and 77 Jazz bass. Great instrument at a great price. But that Affinty P sounds nothing like a real P. (The "similarity" here is that he's overplaying both so they're both crapping out ). At a certain point you have to accept you get what you pay for.

It’s how it feels and sounds, everyone is different. In all tests like this, people in general can’t tell much difference, even at all. The type of wood makes very little difference on tone, the style of pickups make much more of a difference and how you set up your AMP
@ilpatongi
@ilpatongi 5 жыл бұрын
Denis Ahmet Thanks for negating the tonewood crap, I can’t stand it! It’s like saying that a car steering wheel feels the same whether the engine is running or not. It’s completely different, but not because of magical woods

I really like the vintage modified, in specially this model - vm 70. But fender american standard jazz bass and precision sounds so much better, no doubt about it. The body of the fenders - american or mim - is bigger than vmodified, more wood, so... But that's a fact that vm 70 is a good instrument, I bought one of them and it really does the work. I bought a Fender Standard MIM too, he sounds better than VM, but I had to expend a lot of money fixing things... But for me is clear, in the video, that americans are better. Is just buy and play.

Same here. I have bought a SQ VM 70s JB in CAR last summer, for the simple reason that it sounded better to me as the Am. Std. JB. In terms of sound and playability the Squier was spot on for me. I love this thing...
Why is a Fender bass so much more than Squier? (And is it worth it?)
