KJH- As I shall do in the future also : O ) The two Skunks that make their nightly foraging rounds here, have always waddled 15’-20’ around me, but last night, one went under my chair, sniffed/touched my bare foot with it’s long black toe nails (sat VeryStill to avoid a direct hit with it’s infamous long acting & extremely nauseating juice). I did notify it of my presence by making a “TtTtTt” sound, similar to a squirrel. That little stinker gave me a gentle bite, barely breaking my skin.. the bite was actually more of a soft nibble, like the love bite that some cats give when they are overly stimulated or being affectionate… not sure why, but this adult sized cutie never turned it’s butt my way, possibly because it is used to me being there, or, who knows…. Skunks have only a small amount of spray, so they don’t generally spray quickly unless they are seriously threatened, because it takes a while before their bodies can replace it. The spray is so potent because it’s oil based and has to wear off. My MD’s office directed me to the ER, where they started a 2 week/4 shot Rabies vaccine. Has anyone ever interacted with a wild 🦨 that gave ❤️ Bites?

@@WRCatBWHQ people don’t realize that a lot of animals are that way. Their big bad weapons always come at a cost. Venomous snakes are heavily taxed to make their venom. That’s why many times they deliver a dry bite. They have to really feel that their life is in serious danger to spend all that venom that took a lot of time and a lot of resources to make. Black widow spiders are the same way. I have had widows run across my hands and have even brushed up against them with no bite. You have to literally press them between your hands or otherwise crush them to get one to bite. Not always, but most of the time, so still be cautious around snakes and spiders with venom. It makes sense that a skunk would also take time and calories to manufacture a cocktail of chemicals that make up it’s WMS, or Weapon Of Mass Stink. Great video by the way. I really enjoyed that. You're welcome. Thanks for watching and commenting - We have been observing these critters since the fall of 2018. In that time, we have noted that they all seem to "know" each other and how to react to their "Kung Fu." We assume it it because they have all been raised together in the relatively small marsh area behind the feeder station and they probably have had daily interactions (off camera) from the time of their birth. We have indeed seen some wonderful interactions with as many as 5 distinct species sharing the feeders at the same time. Opossums get way bigger than skunks. I've seen absolutely massive ones in the wild. Both can kill each other though, just depends on the size difference.

Thanks for watching and commenting - I agree. The Opossum is an amazing critter. This particular interaction with a skunk shows that they are pretty fearless and can be quite intimidating.

Are they friends? Seems like the oppossum was either not sprayed or does not care about possible stink???
@WRCatBWHQ11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting - I wouldn't say they are "friends" - more like acquaintances. The various species in this area have grown accustomed to each other as they approach the feeder. The other critters seem to have learned from experience that the skunks will usually NOT use their ultimate weapon around a food source - even they don't like their own smell. Please check out the many video playlists on my channel (@wrcatbwhq.com). There are quite a few showing interesting interactions between skunks and raccoons - like this one where a raccoon actually sits on a skunk without getting sprayed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJbSfneIbZtjb9k&pp=gAQBiAQB

If I know anything about opossums, they are not one bit afraid of anything stinky!
@WRCatBWHQ Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting - Opossums are definitely fearless. They have 50 teeth, the highest number found in any land mammal. The fore feet act like fingers and their hind foot has a thumb like a big toe. The tail can be used like a fifth hand when the opossum is moving from tree to tree. A young opossum can hang by its tail.

Thanks for watching and commenting - Opossums have a face that only a mother could love. Some viewers of the cams consider them to be huge rats while others refer to them as "precious." I just consider them very interesting critters being that they are the only marsupial in N America.

Considering how short the lifespan of an opossum, it makes sense it doesn't let a skunk bully it.
@WRCatBWHQ2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting - That's true, opossums life span in the wild is fairly short. Since most of the critters seem to know a skunk rarely sprays around a food source, none of them let the skunks bully them. We have raccoons that routinely sit on skunks while they both just keep eating. Nature is amazing...

Something tells me the opossum does not have the sense of smell 😂 even a bear stays away from them & this opossum stayed like a boss.
@WRCatBWHQ2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting - Opossums have excellent hearing and outstanding senses of smell and touch which they use extensively to find and evaluate food. While it looks like it is "immune" to skunk smell, what is really going on is that skunks will rarely unleash their ultimate weapon around a food source. They don't like that smell either - lol As we have observed over the last few years, we have noticed that all the critters seem to realize this and they will even sit on a skunk (raccoons do this frequently) to try to get it out of the feed tray. Check this out - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJLIe4SFltdrepI

Thanks for watching and commenting - That's a good theory but based on what we have observed at the cams over the last 6 years, the skunks will rarely spray around a food source. Thanks for watching and commenting - Most of the actions are for show. The skunks always act like they are going to spray but usually won't around a food source. They don't like their own smell.
