That is one way to put things into perspective. Blue Whales live up to 250 years, now that is crazy for any mammal! Normally you hear of reptiles like Tortoise and American Alligator Snapping Turtles which live so damn long. But for a mammal it is rare. I guess it isn't always the larger something is the longer it lives, look at poor Great Danes vs Chihuahuas life spans and it is 5 years average for Danes, and chihuahuas can live up to 20 years! Their short lives increase the rate of adaptation because new generations occur extremely frequently. They can have 20 generations of offspring in one generation of human time. There's a trade-off for a long generational cycle -- less genetic adaptability. Since humans perform most of our adaptation to environment at the social level, we don't require many genetic generations to adapt. Animals with less complex brains or more stable environments don't require as high a generational frequency.

I took care of him around the clock. It was weeks before I finally even considered the possibility that he might live. But he did. He was so affectionate and cuddly. He'd run to me the minute I got home from work. If he was napping he was in my lap. He was so completely trusting. More than any animal I've ever enteracted with. @@Dirk_Strider thats purely for in the wild. And they aren't actually elderly at 1, similar to a wild cat they would just be an adult that died. Stress, predation, bad eyesight, poison, and cars are all factors against a long survival for opposums. You know, just like pet rats which have been able to live between 3-8 years in captivity when cared for properly.

Aww that is so awesome. I remember back in 2002 my brother and I had a baby raccoon hanging around our door, and one night we heard him screaming outside so we let him in, it was so weird how he just came into the house, and was still screaming. We fed him some bread, salmon and apples, he got a bit quiet after being held for a bit. Later we found out his mother was killed, which we learned was the same adult raccoon we would usually hear or see around at night, and would often feed, which I know you're not supposed to do lol. Her body wasn't too far from our house, a car had hit her. We had him all checked out healthy no injuries, he wasn't so young that he needed constant care, we ended up keeping him though he was always free to leave, which he would usually go out at night, and come back in the morning. But if one of us were ever outside, he'd always follow us around, he was like a little brother it seemed. We had called him Rocky, since we were fans of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic as kids 😂 Whenever we'd watch movies, he'd be sitting up on the couch, or flat on his back on the floor with popcorn (no butter for him of course lol), it was hilarious as hell! Whenever we ordered or made a special dinner, we'd make something for him as well. The absolute funniest time was when we were pushing the car out of the snow, and he walked outside and stood up on his back legs, with his little paws on the car, as if he was trying to help, he was praised when the car was unstuck, to make him feel like he was a huge help lol. Miss him a lot, he passed away last year, he was pretty damn old, lived longer than he was supposed to.

The story of Little Miss is so sweet - losing her must have been so difficult. Our cat adopted us after our 8 year old rescue cat died of a heart condition. This new boy appeared a week later while we were just starting to heal. Buddy didn't even get a name until he'd been with us for a year. We were scared his family would suddenly appear even though we'd posted signs all over the neighbourhood in the hopes of finding his 'family'. Buddy had a very special bind with my husband who started showing some odd medical symptoms, beyond 3 fractures in his back from someone dropping a piece of lumber on his back from 1.5 stories above. My husband's inability to be free of pain became very frustrating - rarely over a period was he pain free. He and Buddy forged this amazing bond that I could not fulfill- they were best buddies despite some physical limitations. I think their bond helped my husband have a reason to become compassionate and needed. I wasn't able to be between their bond. As my husband became weaker their friendship was amazing, they needed each other to cope with life's frailties. Buddy passed away after being attacked by two coyotes, in our front yard. Two years later my husband passed away. These two were my life and although it's 2 years since I lost my husband of 33 years. I miss them both very desperately but I hope they've found each other in heaven and continued with their way of needing each other. I miss them both. I love you guys and miss their silly interactions and conversations. You guys were my love and my life, without the both of you to talk to I am lost & empty.... x o X O x o X O

The life span thing caught me off guard and got me thinking about something my mum said to me one time about our cats. She said that It's not good to keep them waiting to come inside because their lives are shorter than ours and that means that their experience of life is different. In the same way a year felt like an eternity as a child, because it's such a big portion of our lives up to that point, cats feel like it's a much longer time for them when waiting for us to wake up or finish the thing we were doing to let them in, compared to us who only think it's a minuet or so. Given that we're so much older than them, at a minuet seems like nothing to us. So now I let them right away so they get to be here with us as much as possible and not outside waiting. Perspective is a powerful thing and I see some people lamenting how short these creatures lives are, but remember, it's not short to them, and this little Opossum got to spend all her life with her human friend. It might hurt for us to lose them, but we get the privilege of loving all over again.

They stayed with me for 5 weeks and an officer suggested releasing them at the children's play park about 2 miles from my home. Lots of pine trees for nesting and lots of kids to mooch snacks haha. The day I released them, I placed their cage on a picnic table and opened the door. They sat on my shoulders for over an hour before climbing down and running off into the trees. We caused quite the sensation sitting there lol. I spent the time talking to the kids and their parents about fostering and caring for them and how important it was to let them free rather than keeping them caged.

Just to try to add, I too was first shocked to learn that opossums may only have a 1-2 average lifespan, but after some research found they can live up to 4 years in captivity with proper nutrition, which apparently is actually quite complicated to achieve. Bless this man for doing what he could, even all the scheduled feedings, but they are literally THAT sensitive to nutrition issues it's hard to keep them alive very long. Wow, and I thought rats having totally social personalities that are fun to have as pets only living to 3-4 on average is bad, this would be even worse "emotional turnover" for to try to keep as a pet knowing no matter how good I try to feed it perfectly it would likely only last a year or so.

Yes!! Thats why I'm vegan - for the animals, as all true animal lovers must be. 🌱💞🌱
@ReitannaSeishinOfficial2 жыл бұрын
@@vegancolleen XD wow, that's quite a statement. you must be really young. just because someone eats meat, doesn't mean they don't love animals. i'm a vegetarian (not vegan) because i love animals, but my husband and best friend are HUGE animal lovers and they eat meat. you need to respect other people's dietary decisions (unless they are harming the person), and understand that, no, being a true animal lover does not mean you need to be vegan. you know PETA? they claim to love animals, and yet they kidnap people's pets and murder them because they claim that "it's better than being kept in prison." don't be one of those horrible vegans who love the smell of their own farts and claim to be better than everyone else because they're vegan. those of us who choose not to eat meat ARE NOT BETTER THAN ANYONE ELSE, WE ARE NOT SPECIAL.
@vegancolleen2 жыл бұрын
@@ReitannaSeishinOfficial Well - not really that young, although my children and grandchildren think I'm very young at heart!!! It's very, very simple Reitanna. One can choose to contribute to an animal's unnecessary suffering and death to consume their flesh or secretions even though one does not need to in order to be healthy; or one can choose NOT to contribute to an animal's unnecessary suffering and death to consume their flesh or secretions that one does not need in order to be healthy. A. Contribute to animal suffering and death, or B. Do not contribute to animal suffering and death. A simple choice. How far does one's empathy and compassion for animals really go? I encourage people who profess to love animals to examine their consciences, or at least find out what actually happens in a slaughterhouse. I believe that anyone who chooses to eat animals has a moral obligation to at least learn the truth of that animal's short life and death, or actually witness it before that person chooses to contribute to the horrific suffering that animals endure prior to their terrified deaths. For example, listen to the agonized screams of the pigs in the gas chambers, and watch their terrified frenzy as they try to escape the gas, struggling so severely that they rip their own hooves off, as I have done, and if one can STILL then choose to eat pigs, then that person cannot be an animal lover! The two attitudes are utterly contradictory. Animals suffer and die bloody deaths simply because of the selfishness and greed of humans. Anyone who thinks that they love animals, who, when faced with the reality and sight of these animals' unimaginable agony, still chooses to support it has exposed their own hypocrisy. Humans must expand their circle of empathy and compassion. How will human violence ever end while we continue to perpetrate such unspeakable violence upon the most vulnerable, most innocent of beings, by the billions every year. I comment on this channel, because self-professed animal lovers follow and one would think that they would logically be more open to having full compassion for all animals, not just favoured species. 🌱💞
@bluenomadbruh2 жыл бұрын
@@ReitannaSeishinOfficial my mom says that a lot, that I have to somehow respect the systematic slaughter of millions of animals à day. What I said is that probably someone said the same when Jews were also confined to small spaces and killed everyday. "you just gotta respect that some people r killed even if u don't agree." I live with it but no, I don't respect it. Just like I don't have to respect people who think black people r slaves or young women r to be trafficked. I find it laughable that u say "respect that as long as it doesn't harm another person. If u really love animals, u would say as long as it doesn't harm any living things. People and animals are both sentient beings. So why r u even separating them? Lastly, Idk why u r bringing peta up. No one was talking about PETA. Whether they kill or not, that does not excuse others' abuse. That's like me saying I can kill because others r stealing. And they can't say anything about it so I can keep committing crimes because they do it too. It is called Ad Hominem argument.

I feel your pain, bud. I took in a wild baby cottontail rabbit, with a broken leg, as a rescue and they too only live for about 12 to 15 months. My bond with this little rabbit was a lot like this man and his possum. I kept her through the winter and as soon as the spring started coming around and her leg was healed, I tried letting her go, but I caught her on camera, sneaking back into my yard, where I let her live for two days, before I brought her back in. Sadly, she passed away, about 2 weeks ago and it's definitely been a difficult adjustment.

From first hand experience living with a friend's hand raised rescue opossum: opossums are shockingly smart, kind, friendly and inquisitive. I strongly recommend to everyone to learn about these amazing animals. A few awesome opossum facts for me to share: 1: Opossums are not susceptible to rabies, there is no such thing as a rabid opossum. 2: Opossums are strongly resistant and/or immune to a vast number of venoms, a fact that has been used to help create antivenins that have saved thousands of human lives from snakebite. They also sometimes eat venomous snakes, which also helps protect humans from negative interactions with venomous snakes. 3: Opossums LOVE the taste of ticks and will eat as many of them as they can find, given the chance an Opossum will each eat 5000+ ticks per day, dramatically contributing to controlling tick populations, which also helps protect humans. Given these three facts, opossums are one of the most amazing species of animal in the world, and without a doubt, humans have a long way to go before humans do as much for the opossum as the opossum does for humans.
