whip's cheap guitars

whip's cheap guitars

Күн бұрын

The thing about this guitar is the way it feels. Wide, thick neck.... Heavy solid wood body....this particular model has a "pro" feel about it that Squiers usually lack. It feels "large" and "solid" for lack of better terms. Like all import guitars , no two are likely to be exactly the same , but so far so good with this model! Im playing straight into a peavey Transtube bandit, clean channel, no effects. rock on!

You are SO right..50years ago cheap instruments where appalling, now, that isn't the case. The sounds you got on that Squier would have cost a fortune in the 70's.

Some of the old Tiesco stuff is so crappy, I'm amazed that anyone WANTS to collect it. Some of the old Harmony stuff is kind of cool. Most budget gear from the 60's and 70's is pretty bad IMO compared to what we have today

I bought an almost new SE from a pawn shop a couple of years ago for $40. I was looking for a stolen guitar and I think the guy felt sorry for me. Anyway, I brought it home and didn't touch it until recently when I finally decided what I wanted to do with it. It's the basic black with a high mass MiM bridge, Bootstrap Vintage pups, CTS pots, Kinman treble bleed, shielded cavity, dark turtle pick guard, inexpensive locking tuners that work, Graphtech nut and I dressed and polished the frets. After an easy setup it sounds and plays amazingly well. The sustain shocked the hell out of me. It rings as well if not better than my other guitars. I am amazed at what the SE can do with a little work. I have a Squier Pro-Tone Strat, a US Strat and I am perfectly happy picking up the SE

Totally agree Dave! I just upgraded the same guitar and the skunk striped neck was a beauty. Put a new loaded pickguard on it gave it a polish and fret dress and its gone to a lucky beginner who loves it! Hardly any work done on the fret edges or neck roll off, put a tusq nut on it and it was a lovely guitar. Great base for a mod project as everything fit. Love the vid Dave, thankyou

I have a black SE strat I picked up at a pawn shop for $40. After a thorough disassembly, cleaning, and reassembly, I swapped out the warped pickguard for an inexpensive Dragonfire pickguard loaded with alnico pickups. A fine guitar for a $100 investment. AND I just saw a sunburst SE strat at a pawn shop today with an amazingly beautiful neck in the $60 range. I might grab it soon.

I got the full SE package (guitar, bag, amp, etc.) on Craigslist a couple of years ago. Since then, I've changed out the bridge for the MIM version, and dropped a loaded MIM HSS pickguard into it. The original setup was crap, but now it sounds and plays great. I'm thinking about swapping out the neck for a Mighty Mite compound radius neck, but that would actually double the cost of the guitar.

I appreciate your reviews, man! My 11-year old plays and having an assortment of guitar styles has really kept him interested. Right now his 2005 Squier '51 is his favorite, with Epi LP 100 and Kramer Baretta Special after that. And he has an EVH Standard ( I got it for a crazy price), but likes the others! There is an SE in great shape for $79 but I wasn't sure if it was worth it. This helped alot. Keep playing and doing what you do.

I picked one of these used for the guitar player in my band to use as a back up in case his American standard tele ever went down. He actually enjoys it so much that he uses it in a rotation while gigging.We ended up upgrading most of the electronics with some Mexican standard hss pickups I had recently swapped out ,but I have to say the stock stuff in the Squire was pretty decent.Truth be known I wasn’t a big fan of the neck compared to my Mexican standard.I wanted to say keep up the good work I’m enjoying watching some of your videos

I picked up a 2010 CXS Serial Squier SE Strat recently, and the thickness of the neck at the first fret is .090 which is REALLY fat for a production neck. Most of the vintage 50's necks aren't that fat. The 12th fret is .095

I play and SE and love it. I understand the typical Fender 9.5 fretboard radius is the standard. Mine is 16! Great for a shredder with jumbo hands. Sadly not me. But I don't think it's a problem, even though I'd prefer 9.5. A tighter arc 9.5 Probably makes barre chords a bit easier and I am very prone to hand cramp. But who knows, I'm getting better with the arpeggios and simple soloing, so maybe i'll learn to love the flat board. Meanwhile, SE is a great platform to modify a gat because it's cheap but thick overall. Body is agathis and these gats are pretty heavy. Better for sustain that way. But agathis is still a 'soft' hardwood so watch those dents. They dent so easily. And Agathis has a beauty worthy of paint. Cover it. Not a good DIY sanding job hoping for clear finishes or dying. I think 2003 to 2008 or so is when Squire made them. AXL China factory I think. My gat still needs some fret leveling to get the action low. Tools are on the way from Thomann, but slow is the standard Covid shipping speed these days. Guitar Fetish is a great option for decent price upgrades. I put their 9mm black staggered locking tuners onto my SE, as well as an Alnico 5 pickup loaded pickguard. But Guitar Fetish scratch plate was crap so I transfered all the electrics onto my stock pearloid plate. Easy job. I also put black pickup covers, knobs and a black jackplate on it. I'll likely put a GF black trem plate with stainless saddles in soon along with the GF stainless big block tremolo. That tremolo is designed for thinner bodied Squires like the Affinity and Bullet, but it'll work on mine just fine. If you find a SE under $150, I'd recommend you buy it. Just be prepared, it's a cheap gat and cheap gats don't get much fret love from the factory luthiers. Fret love costs money, or you do it yourself. But the tools cost money too and the right tools are necessary to a point, but there are cheaper means to some of these too. And don't overestimate your 'luthier' skills, sometimes it's wise to pay good money for good work from a good luthier. I shall soon see if I screw up any of my gats. I'll start on the crappiest/cheapest ones first.

The reason I think Squire strats are the greatest budget guitars ever is because they are the easiest guitars to spec out and mod the shit out of. And even if you don't want to mod it, it still sounds really good straight out of the box. And they're cheap too lol

Ive owned several guitars from Rondo. 6 I think. Their les Paul copies are so close to Epiphones in build quality-they are probably built in the same factory. At least where Epis were built when they were in Korea. Unsung probably. The SX guitars are great for the money. Several times I have seen SX Teles And starts in guitar shops marked for twice the new price from Rondo. If ou just judge them on their build and playability you wouldn't second guess the price.

I think SE stands for Star Edition. This was before the "Stop Dreaming & Start Playing" or whatever. I think the SE's are made in China from around 04-05 to around 09-10. Mine is 05 i think. They have full body size rather than thinner and smaller ones, like the Bullet and Affinity and so on. The necks are usually thicker too, like a non-modern C shape. Can't say about the wood but its not Basswood or Plywood.

Hey Dave, I got one of these for a spare and really didn't know at the time what I bought. Thought it was just a cheap strat but I really love this guitar.I'm 6'5" and your right about the necks on other strats. I liked the feel so much I ended up replacing the 250 ohm pots with 500 ohm, all the wiring with the better 22 gauge, and replaced the pickups with fender Tex-Mex. it's really a Great Player, one of my main players now. I'm big on cheap instruments, never could afford or thought any instrument is worth the price they are. Anyway, I recently bought a Epiphone Les Paul Special 1 P-90 because of the P-90's and found not to many complaints, actually I found not one. It has a Mahogany Body and Neck which feels really good. It has Cheap Tuners but like any tuners a little lithium grease and a proper stretching of the strings, any tuners will hold tune. I do find the Cheap Cast Metal Wrap Around Bridge to be the worst item on the guitar as far as quality, but, it does perform as its supposed to. It holds Intonation on the money, at least the one I have does. But check one of these guitars out if you get a chance, I think you will be impressed also. I saw your video on the Epiphone Les Paul SL and it got me curious. I started to investigate them and found a mix of opinions. So of course, I had to order one and find out for myself. If it works out, I believe it would be a pretty good addition to my collection, if not, well, I guess an expensive wall ornament. I'll let you know. Thanks for your Vids.

No skunk stripe and very good electronics. Mine has a maple fretboard. If I changed the p/u covers to white it would be a Gilmour Strat clone. Tuners are cheap though and should probably be swapped.

@msh6865

Actually, they are Chinese. (CY prefix) and were only available for a very short period of time. '98 only I believe. Interesting logo/font on the headstock too. "Squier" in medium sized black script, outlined in gold and "Stratocaster by Fender" in small black font just underneath. Here's a link to one identical to mine... reverb.com/item/903687-1998-squier-cy-strat-small-headstock-triple-black-stock-with-setup-rare-model-stored-15yrs

Seems like a squier strat I picked up not quite a year n half ago as a side project. Did roller string trees n tusq nut. then refinished it as the previous owner had not done anything taking care of it (even the years old original strings were still on it), lastly put an hsh loaded pickguard in it (kept original just in case). Turned out pretty good. Might even do more on it sometime later. I had tried identifying it though but no luck, no serial # or country of manufacture (neck pocket n cavities completely unmarked) just "Squier strat by fender" on the headstock.
@whipscheapguitars2856
@whipscheapguitars2856 7 жыл бұрын
Yup ! this one is just like that. No numbers anywhere. There is a company that produces the necks for these ( can't remember their name at the moment) its a 3 letter acronym. But anyway, they attach a serial number STICKER to the back of the headstocks and ...you guessed it....they fall off quite often.
@CJ-rf9jm
@CJ-rf9jm 7 жыл бұрын
Good to hear that. I'd suspected it was a strat from 1 of those squier box sets often sold to beginners. 1 I'd got was a bit beat up with horrendously crusty strings which I immediately replaced (I shoulda wore gloves for that). Did a bit of work on it since then to set it apart from my other 2 (now 3) guitars n its quite playable.

Picked up a Squier Affinity Strat-Pak in 1997 at my local unclaimed freight (now sadly defunct) for $150. An Affinity Strat, Squier SP10 amp cord, strap, gig bag, strings, picks and CD Rom. As far as I know it was the first years of the Affinitys production. Full sized alder body,small headstock. Looks similar to the SE. Used to see the guitar alone for sale in local shops for $249. In the intervening years I've switched out every thing but the neck and body. The neck is like what you described for the SE.

I don't believe there is a SE in a tele....and thats a dang shame. It is so hard to find a good Tele without buying a mid priced fender. Also a lot of bargain tele's like squires and SX models have nuts that are way to narrow for a lot of us, so they won't work right from the start. I played a G&L junior ( tele with 2 p90 pickups) and it was a great guitar , but even at the stupid low pawn shop price of $225 it wasn't exactly a real cheap guitar. You would be in the $350 range with that guitar 90% of the time...and its not exactly a tele because of the pups. I wish someone would import a great $150 tele knock off with a 1 11/16 nut and I would be all over it!
