Fun Fact: I live in a town in Washington that was founded by a man who played a very important role in preserving the Oregon trail. His name was Ezra Meeker. In the late 1800s (and maybe early 1900s too) he would take a wagon and oxen and go along the original trail and made markers along the trail. He did this quite a few times I think and helped to bring attention to it and raise money to preserve the trail. Our area is known for its hops (the plant used in beer) because of him. *Edited for correction - he began preserving the Oregon Trail in 1906, when he was in his 70s*

And the My Last Days video from about 10 years ago ... to now where they've shown in my country that 11/14 toddlers in a newborn screening study could walk alone or with assistance because of treatment, compared to just 1/16 in the group treated later, and another state here (Western Australia) started newborn screening this week :) I'm not sure if any other My Last Days episodes have such a good epilogue

Hannah's Dumpster Dives are my favorite, cos I, too, am wild for miscellaneous facts and hope you don't mind me regularly sharing more random info lol. You mention the "time of Jesus" in reference to BC (Before Christ) vs AD (After Death), but most professional research papers for the past decade or so have already switched over to CE (Common Era) to replace AD, and BCE (Before Common Era) to replace BC. So when you see something that uses the old versions, you know it's probably not very scientific or legitimate if they didn't know what's actually in use nowadays. Also, the people recreating the wooly mammoth are doing so not just cos they can, but to reintroduce the animal to the tundras where their herds marching across would regularly compress permafrost and prevent the growth of new plants that would break it up. Without them, permafrost has been melting at an increasing rate and releasing more carbon into the atmosphere from the defrosting rotting plant material, adding to the climate crisis. And since humans hunting them and spreading diseases to them is one of the theories of how they went extinct, it's just another way to repair at least some of the damage our species has done to the planet. I'd like to add my own random fact: Did you know, the latching door handle (the kind with a side bolt that enters the doorframe), similar to all doorknobs we have today, was invented in 1878, meaning Abraham Lincoln never used anything but a regular door handle with no latching mechanism to keep doors shut. Most people kept all their valuables in locked chests and drawers instead of locking their doors cos it was too cumbersome to constantly bolt a padlock onto doors. I think about this everytime I watch historical dramas set before the 1880s.

I am wondering if zero gravity would enable him to be able to move more easily?? Or if the air resistance from the air inside the ship would be just as hard to move against?? I'm no expert but I doubt it'd make much difference to Shane's mobility from what I understand about his condition. His arms and legs in particular I remember them saying largely lost mobility due to his muscles and soft tissue tightening so they physically cannot straighten etc, that part isn't a strength issue per say.

I have a rare cancer and my treatments just over the year's has destroyed my mouth I can't eat solid food's it's just painful so I would be in line first to eat at your restaurant. One of my husband's ancestors wrote an account of their wagon train travels on the Oregon Trail. Called "The Gregson Memoirs" - it's quite harrowing, particularly by today's standards. I'm with Hannah on this one - give me my comforts. @Shane, your sense of humor is beyond description. You remind me a bit of Terry Pratchett, one of my favorite authors. There are many elderly people who would enjoy a restaurant that specialized in soft and liquid foods, Shane, in addition to those with SMA. Also, individuals who have had a stroke or Bell's Palsy; they do not do well with liquids, but all kinds of soft or mechanical soft. I would have guessed that having more use of your hands would have been your choice to change your disability. Thank you for your open and honest sharing, Shane and Hannah!

Alexander Graham bell was born in Scotland. He was educated in Scotland and England, moved from there a young adult to Ontario Canada. He developed his communication inventions in Canada and in Boston where he was invited to work in developing communication technology for the deaf. Not an American, though it seems Americans have claimed him as their own

I really enjoyed Hannah's facts! I, too, was surprised that wooly mammoths existed while the pyramids were being built! I look forward to learning more in future episodes. :) Shane's desire to be able to eat makes complete sense, if you think about it. Humans are hard-wired to enjoy food. It's a primal instinct. Food not only nourishes our bodies, but it also brings us pleasure with the release of dopamine and other hormones.

love your videos! but a little correction. alexander graham bell was born and raised in Scotland. he moved with his family to Ontario Canada when he was 23. he moved to Boston to teach a couple of years later, splitting his time every year between his two homes. he also split his sound experimentation, with a lab in each country. he was a really interesting guy, you should do a deep dive on him! haha others may find it boring but it's fascinating to me.

Oregon trail was littered with broken cart wheels & furniture, pianofortes because the trail was so rough that the pioneers had to unload the excess weight in order to get through the trail. As well the trail was marked by all the crosses on the graves of people who died along the way.

27:47 Yes and No. Alexander Graham Bell is probably one of the hardest people to tack on Citizenship because he was born in Scotland and then later moved to both the USA and Nova Scotia Canada during his lifetime. When he invented the Telephone he was in Nova Scotia. I think it was something like he had residences in both Nova Scotia and the States (Masscheutts if I recall)

In the year 1600, English physician William Gilbert used the Latin word “electricus” to describe the force that certain substances exert when rubbed against each other. A few years later another English scientist, Thomas Browne, wrote several books and he used the word “electricity” to describe his investigations based on Gilbert’s work. In 1752, Ben Franklin conducted his experiment with a kite, a key, and a storm. This simply proved that lightning and tiny electric sparks were the same thing. My husband calls dreams "free entertainment" You had a horror movie for your entertainment. I live about 20 miles from where you are staying and the local university (Biola) here discovered a mammoth on the campus when they were building a parking structure. They have uncovered it but kept it in the ground for the archeology students to dig on. There was a skit that SNL did back in the 80s. It was one of those fake commercials for a restaurant called "pre-chewed Charlie's. It was hilarious! I love those facts! Great podcast.

I would definitely come visit your SMA friendly restaurant, even all the way from Belgium! 😄 So that's at least 4 customers already 😉Great idea, because I'm also a big food lover suffering the same weakness due to SMA. Here I try finding restaurants which wanna blend my food themselves by the way, most do that for you if you ask it in advance. At least in my experience here in Belgium. Maybe it's an experience that can help you/others too. And the Kenwood CH580 is a chopper to be advised for use at home, it's usable for small portions unlike many others.
