You seem like the real deal mate. I once hit a squirrel from 60 meters away with an air rifle!!! I say air rifle.... it was more of a catapult......and I say 60 meters it was more like 10.... and when I say hit it, I mean I missed by 2 foot. Apart from that mate I'm the James bond of critter culling! Mint video young man!

awesome! can anybody hunt squirrels in Scotland, or does one need a special permission when not being from the UK?
@ClanGunnBushcraft8 жыл бұрын
+Survival Lilly Thanks Lilly, muchly appreciated. Grey Squirrels in the UK don't have much legal protection. They don't have a hunting season and their classed as vermin/ pests, so we can shoot, trap and poison them. Their none native to the UK, but our Red Squirrels are protected and nearly extinct. Iv never hunted the Reds. Unfortunately... You can only hunt hear legally if you own the land, or know the land owner, so it can be difficult for us Brits to do this kinda thing. Cheers Lilly, atb Andy
@chrissing648 жыл бұрын
Lilley it is a real pain hunting in the UK you would think you could hunt on common land but also you can't you still need to track down the owners for permission. very strange gun laws we have here. you don't need a licence for an air rifle under 12 foot pounds. but if you break the law they will prosecute as if it was a licensed firearm. so have to be careful😃

It's strange, but as a long term vegetarian, I still love to watch your videos! You should come to my wood as there are squirrels everywhere, they do a lot of damage to my trees and bird feeders. They shouldn't be here in the first place I guess. It's good that you dispatch them quickly. Cheers, Steve.
@ClanGunnBushcraft8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve. I respect you being a vegetarian and still condoning pest control & hunting. You have a very simular mindset to me. Iv been meaning to do a vid on my hunting philosopy for a while. It's a little different from the norm. I became a vegetarian when I was 11 years old, by my own choice, no pressure. I didn't & still don't agree with the conditions that most farmed animals are kept and refused to be apart of it. Later in life, for far too many reasons to list, I started to practace hunting and trapping. Pesting on farms mainly. Ran outa people that wanted my critters, so out of respect... I now consume most of them myself. Odd I know, but it's hard to explain in detail on hear. At home, I'm a vegetarian. Have you noticed all the Quorn :) I only ever eat organic meat I harvest myself. Been meaning to tell you that for agers lol Defantly!! Give me a shout if you ever want a few of them Squirrels takin out. To be honest... you'll never get rid of them, but it'll be lots of fun reducing the numbers. Two veggie hunters out on the Squirrels!!! That's badass ;) Cheers Steve Andy
@craftywildcamps8 жыл бұрын
+Clan Gunn Bushcraft That makes sense I could see you had an understanding for nature with the way you were keen on a swift kill. I hate the thought of killing anything, but like I said, I know how much damage they cause even predating eggs and the young of our song birds. I could never eat one, but maybe it would be worth you paying my wood a visit to offer advise on reducing numbers one way or another? Cheers, Steve.

I drove down to galloway for an overnighter last week with my rifle when all the floods happened and didnt see a single bit of wildlife in the forest at stinchar bridge any suggestions were to go a bit more out the way. cheers

Arrrhahaha Sorry Daz, but I'm glad you watched and enjoyed it brotha :) Nice one with the bushy tail, They make good eatin. I know mate, the weather around hears been horrid for weeks now. Makes everything extra hard. I never have much luck hunting in the rain. One of my favorite places to camp with a bit of privacy is Loch Middle. Loch Trool and Dee are only about 3-4 miles North, so most of the tourist & hikers flock there instead. I camp in the surrounding woodland of Loch Middle, it's beautiful up there mate. Iv never seen another soul up there either. Great place to do a bit of bushcraft & wild huntin. Only Squirrels and Wood Pigeon, but the lochs full of fish. Google serch Loch Middle. Not sure about this time a year, but your 4x4 will defo get you down the dirt tracks during the other three seasons and you can park next to the Loch. Or park up in a lay-by on the A714 and hike @2.3 miles east from the road. Cheers bud Andy

Quality mate thanks for the info looks alot nicer in that woodland just full of pine trees in the touristy bits always look forward to your vids thanks again.
@ClanGunnBushcraft8 жыл бұрын
+Jackal Daz Cheers. When I'm hunting Squirrels, I tend to follow their food. At the mo, their collecting the remaining Beech nuts. Find Beech woodlands & it'll be riddled. The nuts have all dropped, so watch the woodland floor and lower branch's rather than upwards. Loch Middles not too good for the Squirrels at the mo, as it's mainly Pines. They do still eat the tiny nuts from the Pines, but they'll be scares. Pine wood hunting is best in summer... Oaks in autumn. Wood pigeons are easier in autumn as well... They gather on the ground around oak trees munchin acorns. Bagged one about 6 weeks ago munchin on an acorn. Cheers bud A

Great work. I just subscribed and like what I see. Always been interested in Bushcraft and have a lot of mental knowledge from watching every documentary from Ray Mears and Bear Grylls etc but so much want to put it into a practical scenario... Do you have a video skinning the Squirrels? would be good to see the process... Cheers Joni
@ClanGunnBushcraft8 жыл бұрын
+WM Johnno Thanks Joni. Defantly! You should go for it and put all that knowledge to practace. I do love all the Ray Mears shows. A true woodsman, and I didnt really start calling it "bushcraft" until I started watching all of his documentarys. Before them, it was just campin to me. Most of my wild camp videos have a little bit of field dressing squirrels and rabbits, but it's probably the one before this video that shows the most detail (Video #5). I show the hunt, skinning, gutting, cooking, drying the hide and tanning a few hides to make them soft. I hope you get chance to watch it. Cheers Andy

A lot of people knock tree squirrel as being some kind of 'lowly rodent' that is 'dirty' or some such nonsense; but squirrel is actually very good eating, and tender if you allow the meat to age for a couple of days in your cooler. Two good sized ones will make a good meal for a man, I have lived off of fish, cottontail rabbit & tree squirrel as my primary sources of protein/ fat, many times when out in the wilderness!

That was a really great video. I grew up hunting squirrels in the swamps of Florida. I still love squirrel hunting and eating them. I have had several friends ask me to take them out hunting and show them how. After making sure that they could handle a gun safely, I would take them out squirrel hunting to get them started in hunting. Not one of them has ever not enjoyed it. We would come back to the camp with our squirrels and I would show them how to clean them. Then we would cook them up. At first some of them were uncomfortable about eating something that they called a big rat. But I told them what my dad told me. If you are going to hunt and shoot it, you are going to clean and eat it. Not one of them has not liked them once they tried them. And they are always ready to go squirrel hunting now. Loved your video. I really like your squirrel cam. Good luck and best wishes

@ClanGunnBushcraft8 жыл бұрын
Soon mate. Learning how to make the baskets was pretty easy, but catching fish was a struggle. Iv put alot of time into them since. Iv finally found out the trick to catching fish with them. Iv been getting good results from them in recent weeks. Tutorial coming soon bud.

Who do Squirrels harm again?

You could say that. I've read however that they are a plague and wonder why.

Looking forward to ye next trip up there.ATB - Marcus.P.S - Sorry never got back to you - the charity I'm raising money for on the 100 miler is Make a Wish Foundation.

Arrrhahaha, Thanks Marcus. I don't know... Sticky barbecue boot sounds delicious :) On a good bed of embers, about 30-40 minutes mate. Funny you ask about seeing anyone near camp... In all the years, iv never seen a soul near my camp, but on the morning of this trip, I seen an old geeza walking through the woods about 100 meters away. Didn't have a fire goin yet, so he didn't see me. I leave a few tools in a box next to the yew tree and iv never had anything moved or stolen. That's a beautiful charity to raise funds for. 100 miles!! Your a good man. Put me down for 50p a mile and let me know when your collectin for it. Cheers Marcus and happy new year brotha. atb Andy

Cheers Moose. I'm a terrible fisherman, but I'll figure it out eventually :-/ Arrrhahaha yeah, I thorght I was going in too mate. If me and my camera had fallen in that slop, and then found out I'd caught jack in my basket... This video would of ended very differently!! Me putting my boot through the basket, then launching it into the woods lolhaha Cheers buddy and happy new year. Andy
