Have you heard squirrels make these sounds before? This video contains clips of squirrels making various sounds. I have been observing them closely for about 3 years now. Any of my comments are mine only and should not be considered scientific. But I have noticed some things:
1. Gray/Black squirrels rarely make any noise. When they do it's one of three sounds, a raspy squeak, a squawk or a grunt. Those are the only sounds I've ever heard from them. Even when tumbling or chasing they may not utter a sound at all. It seems they make noises under two conditions: If they are IRRITATED (angry, impatient) or if they feel THREATENED (scared, anxious).
They also have a squawk/quack combination sound they use as an alarm signal when they sense a predator, usually a cat in my neck of the woods.
2. Red Squirrels. They make so many sounds in so many combinations it's hard to keep track of them all. I count chirp, whistle, click, croak, squeak and grunt. Do you hear any more? When I look at the sound wave pattern on each clip it's amazing how complex the patterns are. Cardinals have a similar language I think, with some recognizable patterns in their communications. I do think that red squirrels talk to each other. I've seen that many times, especially mom to the children, lol.
3. Chipmunks. The one clip is all I have for chippy sounds. It may be a mating call because that was springtime. Do you know if they have more sounds?
Let me know in the comments what you think. Maybe your squirrels have different sounds or voices? Like us, they all have their unique voices, similar but not exactly the same.
