you see how when he climbs the pole, its so narrow that he has a tough time, but he can just manage to get up it, but he still slides if he stops. i had a similar feeder post, but mine was a little thinner, but a single solid piece of iron. it weighed like 50lbs or so, and was super strong, and no matter how hard the squirrels tried, they just couldnt climb it, no matter what. they tried jumping to the feeder directly, but it was over 6 feet high.

10 yrs ago I bought a 10'× 1/2" black pipe banged it 3' into the ground, cut off a 55 gal. plastic barrel 18" from the bottom. Then I sprayed painted the bottom green, drilled a hole in the center and mounted the barrel bottom upside down on the top of the pipe. Bought 2 Bird feeders that look like a barn and a house screwed them to the barrel so I can have 2 different blends of feed. In 10 yrs never had a squirrel, raccoon or any other animal make it past the barrel bottom. I have different kinds of birds feeding at the same time and once a baby bird fell asleep on top of the barrel. I reached up thinking in was dead but it woke up, guess it ate to much and took a nap. Also not as much seed on the ground because the barrel catches it.

You could use peanut butter just as easily. If you want to trap a lot of grey squirrels, the type of trap is the most important consideration. I've disposed of 350 grey squirrels since June 2014 from my backyard but most of them were caught when I switched to a new type of trap 3 years ago. The best solution to a squirrel problem is the Havahart #1083 "Easy Set One-Door Cage Trap for Squirrels and Small Rabbits" I used to use the old fashioned Havahart 1030 traps but I have upgraded to the 1083 and now have 3 of them. It also only has 1 door which makes it much shorter and I thus need a much smaller tropical fish tank to drown them in. You have to order them online, since the big box stores don't stock them for some crazy reason. This is the most humane way I have found to dispose of grey squirrels and I try and keep the water reasonably clean. The smaller tank uses less water. But most importantly 1-door traps are not only MUCH easier to set but they are also much easier to bait because the squirrel can only enter from 1 direction so the bait only needs to be behind the walk-on platform. You don’t have to “balance” the mechanism the bait sits on, thus the 1083 is also a much faster trap to bait. (My bird feeders and vegetable garden are both in the back yard and they attract grey squirrels, so I place my traps in close proximity to them. We have an Oak tree in the front yard but I don't have any traps in the front yard except in the fall.) The other great thing about this trap is that I never have any "set off" by birds. Every time this trap closes, there is a squirrel inside. The 1030 trap was frequently catching small birds, which was a huge waste of time. You will never catch a squirrel, if the trap is closed all day with a bird inside. Use cheap peanut butter for bait. And lure them into the trap with a few shelled peanuts. I then consistently take the carcass to the exact same place in a nearby woods for predators to find. I like to think this causes predators/scavengers to hunt rabbits and other small game much less frequently. I've recently discovered that possums will scavenge grey squirrels if you leave them in the same spot. I like possums, so this is a win-win for me. At night, I place mouse traps inside the closed 1083 so that only mice can get into them. (this keeps small birds out of the traps) I was surprised to discover a mouse infestation, that I was completely unaware of. The first 8 days I did this, I caught 14 mice behind our garage. email me or call with questions. devilsadvacat at gmail WRZ 2020-07-05

Hanging bird feeders from trees is convenient but squirrels make this impractical. Bird Feeders need to be placed far enough away from homes and trees that squirrels can not jump onto them. Then drive a short section of thin, straight, pipe into the ground, long enough that it will reliably support a wider pole around it. Then get a 2" diameter section of PVC pipe approx 4 -5 ' long from Home Depot and place it over/around the thin diameter wrought iron post you are currently using. Squirrels can not climb wide diameter poles. I also have a baffle that sits atop the 2" diameter length and another narrower diameter section above the baffle and supported by it. I have multiple feeders supported by each pole. This also makes it easy to take down your feeders if you ever need to.

Squirrels are pesky persistent food hungry animals. They will not give up easily when it comes to food. You noticed at first the squirrel was trying to chew the bird feeder to the ground. Thanks for the video, seems like allot of the videos show this type of bird feeder. You need to get the bottom of that feeder further away from the pole, that way they cant stretch across to the feeder. It looks like the bottom of the feeder has no stable perch for the squirrels, so them jumping across, they would fall to the ground. Good luck with the feeder.

Are you serious? Yeah they'll stay off your feeder for as long as it takes for them to eat the good seed they like that is on the ground, which won't be long, then they'll be right back attacking your bird feeder. Squirrels are just tree rats. You'll spend all your time and money throwing seed on the ground for them and it still won't be enough. If you want to feed the squirrels do it far far away from your property and no where near a bird feeder. Once the squirrels learn to come to a spot for food, they will never go away.

Gloria Koch they eat so much. I was feeding them homemade peanut butter nuggets with oats, fruit, peanuts and sunflower seeds. They ate those and pulled down my bird feeders. Word got out and I had 13 squirrels in my backyard. It was pretty overwhelming.
