The best and most squirrel proof feeder I ever saw was in a local guys backyard. He used an aluminum streetlight pole about 15 feet high. At the top there were 4 cross arms that 4 bird feeders hung off of. They were on pulleys and could easily be lowered for refilling. It was out of reach from any trees to jump onto , and being smooth aluminum, the squirrels and bears could not climb it .

I’m currently at war with a relentless squirrel. Your verbal expression & tenacity remind me of me. I could buy a baffle on amazon but I just know that little fucker will get around it. I have a dog who’s favorite past time is sitting at the back door watching for the squirrel so he can come get me to let him out & he can take off like a bullet (although he’ll never catch him he’s still proud of himself). I’m rigging up a contraption right now & had KZbin on autoplay. I don’t want to spend any money (asshole’s cost me enough in bird seed) so I’m forced to get pretty creative. I’ve never wanted to beat an opponent so badly. God as my witness I REFUSE to be outwitted by a squirrel!

Great idea and funny. I stretched a strand of #12 gauge electrical wire between 2 clothesline poles and hang everything on that. Suet cages birdfeeders, seed bells. One made it to the middle but did not last long. Another went about 3 feet and turned back. I used turnbuckles on eather end so I can loosen or tighten the wire. A little loose might be needed to make it more wobbly. I think putting springs on either end could make things interesting.

Great video and an even better PSA on creative thinking and problem solving which is what our countries young people need training and experience with. Squirrels are very adept at creating solutions. I too have tinkered with the mechanical solution with some success however I did not anticipate their psych-ops capabilities... Now that they have been mechanically defeated they come to our picture window that we watch from, knock/pound on the glass to get our attention, hold their hands in prayer mimicking our prayer angels on the window sill and sit there until we are guilted into tossing them a nut... I tossed in the towel and pick up some nuts when buying bird feed. We get to enjoy the birds and so be it for having to pay off the little rats extortion fee. It’s the critical path of least resistance to support the birds when we have a foot of snow on the ground in Nebraska.. Looks like a great shop and would like to see more of your clever and real life engineering solutions. Thumbs up and subscribed!

I don't know how you don't have more subscribers, you're hilarious! Hi there. While I love the yankee engineering, I cam up with a much simpler system and have not had a squirrel in it for over 10 years. Step 1 - A fird feeder with a wood base 1.5 inches square. Next on the underside of this base, bolt thru a pipe flange across the cross center of the base. Next - from the home center, get a 4 foot diameter green plastic sewer pipe. Fasten on one end the end cap for this pipe. Drill a hole thru this end cap the diameter of the pipe. Next - drill 4 small holes at the either end of this pipe with about 5 inches of small chain, thru it with S hooks. Next, hang the chain with S hooks thru the undreside of the base, in 3 points, around the center of the pipe and down about 4 inches and attach to the pipe. The sewer pipe must be 4 inches so an adult squirrel can not get its paws around it and grip it. Finally, place the pipe and feeder in your lawn at least 10-12 feet from the nearest fixed object so squirrles can not make this leap to the feeder. This is 100% squirrel proof. Option 2 - purchase a Squirrel Buster Plus as seen on youtube. Next project for you - a Squirrel Under Glass feeder with a built in seed recovery hopper. Enjoy. Bob S

I bought a “squirrel proof” feeder but the red squirrels are too light and didn’t tip the loser. So I tied Ishiguro sinkers to the perch, which worked to a point. Then they figured out how to push the roof off and got INSIDE the feeder, so I tied a wire around it. They chewed through the wire. So I put a webbed belt around it. They chewed that off even quicker. Now I have a brass chain wired around it and fishing sinkers hanging from the perch, and a baffle on the pole. Think I finally frustrated the little effers.

I actually have serious issues keeping squirrels out of orange trees. They take a bite out of the oranges, when my cats are not out. I really don't think squirrels are even remotely cute. I actually smile when I see my cat catch a squirrel. But don't use cats to catch squirrels, if you have a bird feeder. However, you could use what I use to keep cats out of certain areas. Just spike the pole with a lot of sharp thorns and nails and needles.

I had a similar arrangement but when thr squirl jumped on the top it would cause the lid to go down so fast the cable jumped the pully and got between the pully and sheave and it would jam. I cut a small piece of polly and wedged it aboue the pully and there was no room for the wire to get out of the pully groove. Squirls are amazing how smart they are!
