The 'flower' referred to in this anthem, isn't to be taken literally. Yes, the Thistle is universally accepted to be the national 'emblem' of the country, but the 'flower' referred to in the song, is the people..........specifically the people displaced by 'The Highland Clearances' of ancient English laws, which evicted many tenant-farming families, so the land could be granted to 'noble' families who had given loyal service to The English Royal Court. The song itself is just a big 'F**k off' to England, for the way those people were treated, & a promise to make it 'difficult' to anyone else who attempts anything similar in the future! 🏴
@craigmccullough73332 жыл бұрын
You really should read your history again. The Highland Clearances were in the mid 18th to early 19th Centuries, when the landlords found they could make more money raising sheep than from tenant farmers. And in 99% of cases, the landlords were themselves Scots.

My Scottish granny ,who I was named after, thanks you. Having visited Scotland on several occasions, I can well understand all Scots people's sense of national pride. Unfortunately Scotland doesn't have it's own National Anthem. Flower Of Scotland is an unofficial anthem adopted by the people. The Scottish Parliament did look into making it official but decided it "wasn't a political issue" and dropped it. I wasn't impressed by this version of the song, the original, written and performed by The Corries, is so much better.

The flowers that are mentioned in our national anthem are a reference to the sacrifice of the flowers of Scottish manhood who died to make Scotland free. So many young men perished to gain Scotland's freedom that the male population was decimated. Many Scots wondered whether the population could ever recover from such a huge loss, hence the verse "When will we see your likes again?" Saor Alba. Alba gu Brath.

The ‘flower’ is the people. The people are the blossoms on the tree that is Scotland.
@andrewclayton4181 Жыл бұрын
The Flower is the youth of Scotland who died fighting for their country. Usually against the English. Edward I largely conquered Scotland, but following his death, castles and towns were regained by the Scots. The last one still in English hands was Stirling, and Edward II sent an army north to relieve the siege. His army was severely beaten at the nattle of Bannockburn, by Robert the Bruce, and sent packing. Scotland remained an independent country for a long time after that, until it was absorbed into the UK.

The Flower of Scotland is the Thistle. I am sure some of Squirrels Scottish section of the squad will explain it better. It's a beautiful anthem and as a northern lass I am nearer to Scotland than I am to London and much prefer the beauty of Scotland any day. At the end of July Birmingham is hosting The Commonwealth Games and this is one occasion where all four nations compete in sporting events as individual countries (and not under team GB as in The Olympics and other world events) so no doubt the anthem will be heard at these games, alongside our other countries which make up the UK and also the Commonwealth countries who come to the games.

i’m scottish and the flower referred to is the people who fought against the english army (think braveheart) proud edwards army, culloden ( although we lost that one) and the people rising up and being as good if not better than scottish warriors of the past. our flower is the thistle which has really jaggy, spiky bits of the leaves and the english army would cry out in pain when they stepped on them during war raids which would alert the scots sooner than they expected plus you should hear it sung in stadiums before football or rugby matches with bagpipes for a better experience it’s magical like that. take care and stay safe 🏴😘

The flower of Scotland is the wild thistle, the song version you listen to sucks - Tune into the Scottish national anthem sung by the fans, either at Hamden on Muriayfield, another Anthems you should listen to is the Welsh rugby supporters singing their national anthem - they have fabulous vocals and the song/anthem in not bad! Scotland have other so called anthems like - Loch Lomond and amazing graze which can be heard in any pub anywhere in Scotland at the last bell! May I suggest you watch Braveheart film, this will give you an insight in what Scotland suffered from the English! We fought and died for our wee bit hill and glen! The Scottish highlands are the nearest place on earth to heaven, when you walk in the footsteps of our ancestors you will feel their pain, yet feel close to God Scotland is a small country, but has the most honest loving Scots who will make your visit a worth while adventure!
