Hello Everyone! I had ran out of bird/squirrel food over the weekend. I felt so sad when they came to the patio and I had nothing for them. I had blue jays, and cardinals that I just love seeing. I still have the young squirrel coming and I've decided to name him Tippy. No special reason, other than that the end of his tail tip is sparse. He’s an ambitious little guy, I’ll give Huey that! I thought it was going to be Bram who tried to grab you, given that he’s older & known you for longer, but Huey’s clearly got youthful enthusiasm spurring him on 😂 I often wonder if the squirrels appreciate that the nuts we feed them directly aren’t actually spawned from our fingertips somehow. I know their vision isn’t too good really close up, so I’d be fascinated to know how they perceive the food appearing & if they realise that we’re usually reaching into a tub, or packet (or even pocket) to fetch fresh treats when they come close. I always feel bad whenever I’m outside & am accosted by a squirrel looking for a treat when I’m not holding the nut tub or haven’t got any food in my pockets. They always look so hopeful, then forlorn when I have to run off to fetch something to give them. Whilst I feel bad making them wait, they often do though 😅 Your legion of adorable visitors are always a joy to behold. Plus, it never fails to warm my soul knowing that there are kind people taking care of animals, both wild & domesticated with such generosity & affection.

It’s watching them try to take more than two nuts that really gets me. It usually takes them several goes to work out the third one always pushes at least one of the others out of their little mouths 😂 🥜🥜🥜🐿

It looks like he dropped the almond while trying to reach for a 2nd nut (finger), then was reaching to try to catch the almond, then got too startled and ran… he sits breathing and looks over his shoulder like he’s sad, or too nervous to come back. Cutie. I’m so glad you have a long-term relationship with these sweet babies. He’ll be back.

I only have about 2-3 squirrels that come to my window. I think it's down to two, one adult and one juvenile. There used to be 2 adults. But I've only seen one since last summer. Both are still too skittish right now, they run off if I stand near the window. But they both are used to me offering up nuts in the morning and always come by to check.

Had someone ask if I was afraid Momma would bite. No! She’d never, she’s so gentle. Her son, well not intentionally. He is a little quicker to grab the nut and get two steps away then look back. “I want that magic hand, unlimited nuts” 😂 it was cute

I bought raw pecans for them today. The mother Squirrels love them. There are too many dogs here, and squirrels are terrified of them. Especially sight hounds. A sight hound is a very gentle animal, but their rodent instinct kicks in, and if a squirrel is caught out in the open, it stands no chance.

The issue with hand feeding squirrels is this: You have white folks fingers, your fingers look like peanuts to the squirrels. This happened with my grandfather, he would hand feed the squirrels, until one bit him. Black squirrels have better vision then grey squirrels, they can tell the difference between your finger and a peanut.

I got bitten, but that didn't stop me to hand-feed the squirrels. It wasn't their fault, but mine. I just had to learn how to approach them and develop some good reflexes.
