I had the same problem. I have a birdhouse on top of a 18 steel pole. Then about 5 ft below I have a feeder. The squirrels would jump from the fence to the pole. So I greased the pole. Now my neighbor sits on his patio in the morning drinking his coffee and watches the squirrels jump to pole and slide down....over and over again. He says it's his morning humor.

Just got ourselves 2 bird feeders and a "squirrel defeater" (yep! That's the brand name as well). The bird feeder does it's job. The squirrel defeater also does its job, kinda/sorta. As long as it is set to the right height, no squirrel has been able to get to the feed. But those squirrels, though. You can see them look up and scheme their attack -- my wife finally told me, if the squirrel makes it to the top and gets to that feed, I am going out and placing the feed on a paper plate on the ground for them! They've earned it. :D

Squirrels can be pretty friendly little creatures. I started feeding one at my brother's house, went on for a long time. He got to the point he would climb right on my knee and take food from my hand. They problem came when he told his friends about me. It made me nervous to go out in the morning and see 15 jittering squirrels all sitting in the driveway not afraid of me. Waiting for a hand out. My brother was pissed 🤣🤣🤣

The 1st year 2 males fought along our fence line till they were so exhausted they lay motionless (10 minutes) I finally went out to see if they were even alive. They were and flew away! All sorts of sparrows, chickadees, occasional nuthatch, 3 species of wood peckers and 3 species of hawks come for lunch (till we let trees grow in so there is no "swoop room" for the redtails) We go thru as much a 300lb of seed over a fall and winter.

If the squirrels, just like the squirrels around here, had any sense, they wouldn't have to climb up to the feeders. The birds are so messy, they knock more out of the feeder than they eat so there's more than enough on the ground. lol My dad wrapped the feeder post with sheets of aluminum with the top sheet overlapping the bottom one so the squirrels couldn't jump up, get their claws on the top of the bottom sheet then work their way on up. Worked pretty good. But your way is way more fun to watch!

There's a really easy way to deal with squirrels raiding bird feeders- just get or make a feeder for the squirrels. Put it in a place of easy access to them, filled with peanuts, and they will ignore the bird feeders. Squirrels are lazy, and take the path of least resistance to food, unless you try to make it difficult for them, and then they become relentless.

My cat, a robust neutered male, caught all forms of rodents and brought them to me so I would praise him. He killed squirrels, (at least the ones I didn't shoot) and dropped them at my heels. He brought me a yearling rabbit one evening. He loved the back meat on the squirrels. I loved that cat; his name was Gill. I photographed his animal catches and made a booklet called "Gills Kills." This booklet I would take to the neighborhood party meetings just to get a roar out of the softies. Loved that cat.

Hope these suggestions are taken well, as they are intended to be helpful and I thoroughly enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing.

Orioles sure are curious. There are three that almost regularly visit my hummingbird feeders. They can't seem to figure out what the big draw is, but they keep coming back to check. To keep the ants out I make simple moats on either a wire or a bolt, fill the cup with Dawn dish washing soap which quickly dries in a soft wax. Ants won't cross it and it lasts for years. Good solution to the squirrels. Cats would kill my hummingbird visitors, but the feeders are suspended about 14 feet in the air. The fall wouldn't be fatal, but the cats don't seem willing to try.

My father in law used to use tubing to tap his maple trees draining them into a tank in the Spring and the squirrels loved to chew through them to get to the sap. A friend and I were going to make a c-clips with an ear on each side to clip over the tubing. Then a light piano wire could be ran down each side of the tubing from ear to ear on the clips and then be connected to a weed burner electric fencer. I know lots of guys that were tapping trees that would’ve bought these clips just to watch those destructive tree rats dance when they got between those wires and ended up getting the hell shocked out of them on the tubing.
