This is a HOW TO video. If you wanna see just the squirrel's trying to get into feeder skip to 16:20. I decide to try a piece of PVC pipe with a bungee cord attached to it and the slinky also . I set my camera up the following morning to see how it works and so far so good. If anyone try's it also let me know your results. #Howtostop #funnysquirrels #squirrels
This is a squirrel deterrent that has been 100% effective on my squirrels at two separate locations
I used a piece of 3/4'' PVC pipe cut in half so it would go around pole, because the pole is u shaped on both ends, then used electrical tape to hold together. Also a cheap, pretty weak bungee cord about 2' long and a slinky . Total cost under $10.00
Update video on how it's working • Squirrel vs PVC/Slinky...
Update to the update : I did change the bungie to a very weak spring from a hardware store. The bungie would only last a couple of months. After 17 months it remained 100 % effective on my squirrels
Disclaimer: I do not claim this is effective on all squirrels. Your little rodents may be different or conditions may vary. No animals were harmed making this or it's use.

I've found that Mini-Slinky's work. About 1/4 the size of the regular slinky. I purchased mine in packs of 5 at Walmart. A combo of Mini inside a regular slinky works even better.

Actually, the Palm Squirrel (introduced in the early 1900s) is still living in Australia and the Gray Squirrel (introduced in the late 1700s)lived there for years until that strain of the species died out. Learn about where you live before throwing random “facts” out there.

Cheaper (in bird seed loss) less trouble to buy a spring loaded feeder at the garden center. Have mine 18 yrs and no squirrels. Hanging outside my window on 10ft T-bar galvanized 1/2 in. plumbing pipe cemented in a 2ft deep hole in the ground. They jump from the roof or the pergola onto the feeder and shut the door every time. They don't even try anymore. They do clean up the bird scatter on the ground instead which is great! I changed my mix and get even less of that problem.

@@HawkesVids I would imagine pecan trees would be harder to protect. I wonder, you know how they have created devices that create sounds to keep insects away, and even small animals. Various frequencies for your various living annoyances. I wonder if something like that could be created for squirrels as well? But would it keep the birds away as well? Would the frequencies mess with the trees and other plant life as well? The thought just popped into my head so I thought I'd just spit it out. LOL! Mindless babbling. 😂

Use 4" PVC drain, waste, and vent pipe about 5 feet long around the support pipe. Slit only one side with your saw. Pull open the slit and slip the support pipe through the slit. Squirrels can't climb 4" plastic pipe. They can't get a grip. No bungie cords, no slinky. Just 4" PVC resting on the ground.

Great fun, but if you really want to thwart the little critters you need only to fix an upside down bucket or hard plastic domestic waste-bin on the pole. Cost: $2 or less. Time Spent: 5 mins Effectiveness: 100% How to: Cut off the rim and handle if using a bucket. I use a hard, rimless polythene waste bin that's is about 10 inches high and 8 inches across at the top. The pole passes through the center of the bottom. Drill or cut the hole to be a tight fit on the pole. I heated the pole and used it to melt out the hole giving a perfect fit. Push the bucket right up to the top of the pole, open end downwards. Fix a stopper on the pole, about six inches below the base of the feeder that you are trying to protect. I used a metal hose-clip but a few winds of duct tape will be just as effective but not as squirrel proof. Slide the bucket back down against the stopper and set-up the feeder in the usual way. The squirrels climbing up the pole end up inside the bucket unable to go anywhere but down again. There will be a few trial nibbles around the edge of the bucket after which they will give up. Problem solved! If you use a very cheap bucket then it will deteriorate over a couple of years due to UV and become brittle. My polythene waste bin has gone three years with no problem.

Martin Halley Thanks for the comment. That sounds like a great idea ! My pole has ends that won't allow just to slide anything onto it without either cutting the bucket/trash can or cut the pole and reweld it . Right now this has been working, but thinking about another feeder and may try this . I've had several viewers give great ideas . Thanks for yours

Have had many encounters with these cute ,fuzzy rats with tails, if you have an infestation with them as I have, in my attic and other interior spaces (they come in winter), and you don't want to kill them, and you can locate their nest and isolate the area, easy off oven cleaner sprayed works like a charm but you must find their means of entry and plug it!

Hey Hawks Vids: I'm the guy who commented with plans to make the pole spin on your bird feeder. Did a little rethinking on pulley sizes. Unless I figured wrong, (good possibility), if you put a 1/2" pulley on the motor, (1725 rpm motor), and a 6" pulley on the pipe, you should get about 140 or so rpm. This should be enough to sling the offending squirrel off the pole. You can always increase the motor pulley size if it's not fast enough.

My wife grease the pole with Vaseline and that was fun for a while but one of them discovered he could jump from the ground and land in the box. In reality he doesn't eat much and only comes around every few days. I think he has to travel from a few blocks over and has a few cats that would love to invite him for dinner.

I work in wildlife control and your making it much harder than it needs to be. First, squirrels can jump 5 to 6 feet straight up. To add to that, as you saw, they have no qualms with jumping from nearby trees or roofs. Second, in very rare occasions we do, what we call, a squirrel exclusion (this doesn't work for most houses), its complicated, but basically its a PVC pipe at a steep angle from their entrance. I mention it as replacing the entire pole with a good sturdy piece, of at least, 1.5 inch (the larger the better) PVC pipe would be all the deterrent you need. The simple reason it that it is too slippery to climb, and if kept clean they will never get up it. Do keep in mind that this will not stop flying squirrels, and at the moment I know of no humane method to keep flying squirrels from accessing bird feeders.

I have the way that works, an inverted large funnel and a smooth, steel wool rubbed and well greased and motor oiled steel pole. It is more fun to watch them try to climb up the greased pole and get onto the funnel and they never make it to the funnel. The funnel has motor oil on it as well, you will laugh your ass off as they try to hold on and climb to the top. They eventually will get smart enough to take over the world and grease our poles.

If you have a table saw just set the blade height to slightly over thickness of pipe. Then fabricobble a jig to hold the pvc while you push it through. Betting that the squirrels claws would have no problem finding purchase on that soft pvc though, regardless of any zip ties. Maybe something harder like a brass pipe? Or even just some generous lubing of the existing pipe?

I have found, after trying everything everyone else has!, you need a certain type of plastic the squirrels can’t scratch into. And pvc isn’t it. It is plastic used to bad certain dog food. I get Taste of the Wild. You cut a width wide enough to wrap around the pole a couple times. Tape/glue the top of the bag tight to the pole. The bottoms 3’ of the bag stays loose. It works.

Gotta admit the slinky is a fun idea but a few lengths of 6" galvanized stove pipe is quicker and you can snap it into place around the existing feeder pole. Squirrels can jump 4 ft so do at least 6 ft worth of that stove pipe and they just can't get a grip even if they do a flying leap part way up.

Hi Ernie, Thanks for the comment. I'm pretty sure STP and other oils and grease isn't very healthy for them . They will have to lick it off and probably not real good internally. Birds may get on feathers and not good either. I wonder if there is a food product that if they ate it wouldn't hurt them, but is real slick.

How about a small electrical pulse periodically applied to the Slinky, much like an electric fence for cattle? You effectively isolate the Slinky from the pole (i.e., electrical ground) when you surround the pole with PVC.

@HawkesVids
@HawkesVids 3 жыл бұрын
yes, definitely. I tried just the slinky and it took them only about a day to get past it. I up-grated to a using a spring from a hardware store after a month or so, because the bungee just wore out. After 4 years , I have never had a squirrel get to the feeders. Even where I live now. Every year the new little ones, fresh from the nest will try. Then you just see them looking up at the birds for a few seconds, then they go back to eating what the birds knock out to the ground.

Hi Brenda Dale, First thanks for watching and commenting and your right, probably would have. My old jigsaw is one my daddy gave me probably 30 years ago and he probably had it 30 years before that and it wants to shut off after about a minute and you have to wait for it to cool off . I thought about my circular saw, but the recip worked better .

This use to be where I had my shop. Those were storage units. Were about 50 of them, Didn't belong to me, but I did rent them for the owner. He had some that were build by a company. Those he built. They were just framed with 2 x 4s, , metal siding and roof. The roof had maybe a 10'' pitch from front to back. Those had a 4' overhead door. No electric. They were on concrete. I build a building at my house up on blocks with a treated wood floor, Has wood siding and a tin roof. Thanks for watching and commenting Andrea

Larger diameter pvc pipe. Cut down one side with table saw. Metal pipe/rod can be pushed through slit. Squirrels can't grab one inch or larger pvc pipe.

++ Alex Summersell.. Been there, done that with 2" PVC and the critters shimmy up like a native climbing a palm tree. They even learned how to put their claws into the cut like a rock climber grabbing on a fracture line. Next step was a couple of 6" stove pipe sections. Nothing to get a grip on and too large in diameter to hug / shimmy!

A couple of questions and an idea. First, use the fast-forward function on your video editing software to zip through the repetitive parts, if you want to show the whole process in videos like this. (I think you just use the mouse to "squeeze" the video track, make it shorter on the timeline, but editors are all a bit different.) Now, questions. Wouldn't it have been easier to take the feeders off the pole, pull it up and slide the pipe on it? Does the pole have some sort of stabilizing 'foot' that sticks out, or is it just a straight pole? Actually, it would have to be a straight pole, or how do you get the slinky on there? I'm not trying to bash you like some others are, and certainly not about the squirrels themselves - little thieves. Just an idea and a few questions. Good luck!
@HawkesVids
@HawkesVids 4 жыл бұрын
Hey, first off, thanks for the comment . Ok, the editing , yep you're right , it's pretty bad. I made this over 3 years ago. I was just learning. Of course when I made it I thought it was so well made. Lol . I think I've gotten better since then. I mostly make comedy / vlog stuff now . Check some of them out if you like . I did start a wildlife channel recently , Going Wild With Hawke. Will be putting outdoor/ animal stuff on. The pole , yes it has a foot bracket welded on , that keeps it from turning and stability I guess. I put the slinky on by separating it a little , and working it around the pole , then I just wired one end at the top . I still have it set up where I live now. Like I said in a update video I made after that one . I had to change the bungie to a spring so it would last longer . Thanks again, and sorry you had to endure it . I actually re-edited it without the how to part several months after this ones . It's on my channel somewhere .
