Same right now! I thought maybe distant foxes, or some kind of bird, I heard it for the first time this morning. Although mine sounded like a “Chirp-screech” All I saw ahead were squirrels, so I decided to investigate^^ it makes sense to be a warning call, not long after the noises, a big bird dove at them and knocked one of the littler ones out of the tree

I am raising a baby fox squirrel she is 8weeks now I got her at 2weeks her eyes were closed.. I am absolutely in love with these animals... do you have any recommendations to start up rehabbing or any way to get govt grants to do so? What do you recommend I do to get into this? Helping other rehabbers in my area as a volunteer at first? This is the first squirrel I have ever been up close to where it would let me touch it.. and it was a baby but I did all the research and some every day to understand how much to feed and what. Anything else I should give her is it OK to let her chew up pecans at 8 weeks and sweet potatoes? We feed her according to weight... have 20/50 fox valley. Her poops are pretty hard but we get her to poop every feeding. We think she might be mild dehydrated anything you recommend we have done the pedialyte especially at first since she wouldn't take puppy milk

The first two, the warning calls about potential danger and then about other critters danger, is EXACTLY what I just heard in my backyard while my two pups were outside. I have been wondering what this sound was because I’ve heard it out in front of my house too (where the neighbors two cats prowl). I, like other commenters thought it was a bird this whole time. I stood out back for awhile and FINALLY located the source of the sound and I was surprised to see it was a squirrel sitting on a tree right above where my dogs were hanging out. I came to KZbin to try to determine what the sounds meant and now it all makes sense! Hahaha. Thanks for the informative and cute video!

How nice it is to hear another squirrel making the purring sound. It's like when a tiger makes a chuffing sound, for a greeting. I have a squirrel that makes the same noise as she pokes her head around the wall to see me sitting at my front door. She will then run a straight line directly to me for some nuts. @Stormwriter2 жыл бұрын
I always talk about the first one, which I've read is used more for aerial predators. The siren-type call starts out softer, and increases like a siren. As opposed to the sharp KUK KUK QWAA sounds, which are easier to pinpoint the squirrel and "localizes" their position. The siren doesn't have sharp sounds, so it's harder to locate them. Remember, birds can come pick them out of the branches, so they aren't 100% safe in trees. This sound is often accompanied with the squirrel being still, and not shaking its tail to visually warn their friends, because once again - they don't want to give away their position to an aerial predator.

Thank you for this. I was just in the garden and I could hear a squirrel making noises in next door's garden and it was sounding like distress. But no, it's just a warning call about danger. Probably because s/he could see me through the hedge - even though I'm the nice human that leaves them tasty nuts to eat! The crying stopped when I moved back to the house as well, and they are fairly unconcerned about our two cats. I'm also sure I've heard them purr before, because I remember thinking "wait, is that squirrel PURRING?!" and according to this, my ears weren't deceiving me!

I was just outside and a young squirrel (not a baby but not quite full-size either. Close to adult size.) There were a couple of adult ones chasing each other. This one stopped about halfway up a tall-ish tree stump and was making a short, quiet, repetitive sound that I've never heard before. It didn't sound distressed but it appeared to feel trapped on the side of the tree when the other two were roaming below, even when they moved further away. I walked halfway to it, to maybe 10 feet away...to make sure it wasnt stuck somehow then moved back to where I was. I've listened to two videos but haven't heard this sound in either one. I can't describe much else. It was like short quiet repetitive vocalizations. 🤷♀️

But he was on the neighbors yard and real high up , I was worried he was injured, but I couldn't reach him if I'd tried, but I didn't try as I didn't want to scare him more. So, this is the first article/video I found that helped! That first one was exactly it!! So, when we come back for good, almost🙄😊😬, I'll be wanting to put in a bird bath with a bit of spray... when my sun conure was alive 😢I couldn't keep her out of the faucet anytime doing the dishes... but also bird feeders od course.... but I'd also love to kinda, put out a tray of good food for the squirrels too... although it must be affordable, so we'll see😊 But, thanks for the help!! I appreciate it very much!!

I have a family of five living in the trees behind my house, they run along the fences to get to my house if they see the window open. Sometimes I open it late and I hear them all chitter excitedly through the branches as one of them spots it. 😂 They pretend to love me for my array of many types of nuts 🫤 (Walnut _never_ fails.)

I thought there was some sort of hawk outside on my front porch because I kept hearing a call similar to this one 0:40, it sounded really cool so I decided to go look for it and low and behold there was a little squirrel out sitting on my porch he got scared when I came out and then the noise stopped! So I came here! The sound was a bit different, it didn’t have that little squeak at the end, really interesting, especially the teeth chattering noise that’s really cool. It must be so lovely to have a connection with these beautiful animals and build trust up so that they allow you to be so close to them, very sweet ❤

Oh my goodness, thank you SO much. I have a family of squirrels living in the forestry area next to my home, & yesterday one of them was making a sound for over half an hour, I figured it was due to the cat in my garden. The moment I shook the bag of peanuts the cat scarpered, & the squirrel tracked the cat until it disappeared, which made me giggle, as if to say ‘YEH! Do one! This is MY yard!’ - I put my peanuts out & watched as each one came down to bury their peanuts in my garden (I believe I have more peanuts in my garden than grass seeds at this point!! 😂💗) They just started up again with another cat who likes to sleep quietly in my garden, I don’t have the heart to scare this one so it will have to figure it out (they have plenty of places to play and roam until the kitty moves!) but I thought I’d look up the sound. It was the first one, but my goodness, much much louder! You have cute little squirrels 🥰 xx

Thank you 😊❤️ Usually cats don't try to get the squirrels, but squirrels do have many other predators.

@@Squirrels_at_the_window Agreed, I’ve had cats my entire life, far too slow to catch these little ones lol! The cats coming into my garden don’t even notice them. Neighbours likely think I’m mad as I’m talking to the squirrels ‘He’s not going to get you, you’re too fast!’ ‘Look, come and get your peanuts!’ - & the conversation goes on, I suppose that’s what you get for living on your own 🤣 I grew up on a farm surrounded by nature, so moving here was quite a treat (I’m disabled, so I moved into a ground floor property / we call them bungalows here in the UK) as it’s not really built up! I’ve got hedgehogs, many species of birds, lots of insects, squirrels & the neighbourhood cats. That’s about it! So they’re safe. Just vocal baby’s lol. How long have yours been visiting you? ☺️ x

We have a rescued baby squirrel that fell from its nest in the middle of the summer during one of the brutal days here in South Florida. My daughter named her Fern and right now she's eating the top of my armoire No Lie!! 😂😂🎉 Simultaneously my one-eyed rescued rabbit is chewing on one of the legs LOL it has a curve... this is something we cannot let continue😂😂 literally my life with pets and rescued wild animals has been the most amazing ride and experience I'm thankful to God for every moment! 🙏❤😊 This is why my furniture is secondhand to begin with!

Hi. The first time I heard this sound I thought it was a distressed baby so much so I had to get up and look out my window to check and then noticed one of the 2 regular visitors in my cul-de-sac a grey squirrel in the tree making the sound. I had to research why they make this sound. Personally, now I know what this call is for it breaks my heart every time I hear it. It can go on for half an hour or more. Is there anything I can do to shorten the distress of 3:47 this beautiful animal, albeit a natural behaviour for it. Ta x

Very nice video interpreting squirrel vocalizations. The purring sounds can also possibly be curiosity. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
