#3 I'm totally one of the people who keeps two funeral dresses (one summer, one winter) that I haven't worn in years. When the time comes that I need one, I'm not going to want to go shopping. I used to also keep two nice dresses for weddings, but that's also very infrequent at my stage of life and if I ever do need another one I'm sure I'll enjoy shopping for it.

Definitely! My grandpa died when I was 16, and it was the beginning of June in a heat wave. Finding a black dress was just plain awful! To this day, I keep a nice summer dress that is appropriate for funerals. Sadly it was used three times already before COVID, and then, well... For winters I keep a nice dress pant with a classic black turtleneck, which always looks chic, and doesn't need a scarf. I also keep one wedding appropriate dress for summers.

The fastenings that come with self-assemble furniture can be very hard to replace. Taping the bag of spare screws to the underside of the item they belong to can save a lot of inconvenience later - and they're out of sight, not taking up storage space anywhere. I also keep the piece of cardboard box that has the name and bar code of the bed frame, on the slats under the foot of mattress. It's not taking up any usable space, and if we want to buy another bed frame that will match, we'll need that information.

the biggest thing i DONT follow as a mostly minimalist, is the "multiple" rules. i have diagnosed ADHD and having multiple lip balms, on my desk, in my bag, in my bed etc really helps me so that i dont misplace them or forget them. same goes for some kitchen gadgets like spatulas, it really helps me, so im really happy you mentioned the "its different for everyone" thing

It‘s hard for me to just throw away thinks, because they are not trash at all. So to get rid off all this clutter I startet four years ago with a little box, a small table and a sign at my driveway to give away those things. This year I added a tomato greenhouse, placed that table in it (to protect the things from rain). It helps me a lot to put all those little items immediately out on that table. …. tablecloth, Books, vases, pens, games, flower pots, …. and lots more. To see, that people happily took those things, have conversations with them was a joyfull side effect. I had to clear out my parents house (my and my siblings childhood home) all on my own with just a little help. That was an expirience I don‘t want my child to go through some day….

For a slight twist and sustainability when it comes to socks: socks with holes or mismatched socks can be washed one more time and make great rags for the kitchen, bathroom, or baseboards. I've been working hard to be a more conscious consumer and it is crazy how many products can be repurposed or up-cycled for sustainability! I do this with old socks, old shirts, old towels, just cut the bigger things and use for rags that you can toss after a cleaning day or if there's a big mess (kids and pets are always creating those lol). Love the channel and look forward to more inspiration (:

Although I've decluttered my wardrobe many times over the years, I just couldn't bear getting rid of any of my (30+) hats - that is, up until recently! Since I retired a few years ago, I've let my hair grow (it was always short during my working years), and now I wear my long hair in a chignon, or in a bun, and there's just no way I can wear hats with my new hairstyle. So the hats - and the hat boxes - are finally gone (to a worthy organization), but I have photos of me over the years wearing those hats as a lovely memory of them!

I feel great that most of these categories I have already taken care of. I've been shooting for minimal-ish and am so close, but the one category that has me is storing other people's things. I've been able to shed my parents' things after they passed, my sister's things that she left behind when she moved across the country 30+ years ago, but my one rough spot is my eldest son. He moved out in July but still has a bunch of stuff in my second bedroom. He gets very stressed when dealing with stuff so I've given him the next few months to work on his new place and then asked that we resume clearing his things out in January. Once that is done I will have a near minimal place and I am so looking forward to it. =)

I think I have that exact same ruched one-piece in red. I wear it with little snug swim shorts. I feel better with more coverage, just as a personal preference. After a while I’ll put on a rash guard to avoid having to reapply sunscreen. I just wore a dress I haven’t worn in years because I finally found lacy leggings to wear underneath in the cold and still look fancy. Consider what would make you want to use an item that you have kept in your closet but haven’t worn. At the same time, when I wore the dress, I concluded that I had outgrown the style. I’ve been thinking about what Shawna Ripari, and Alexa of Conscious Consumerism have said, that using an object makes it more clear as to whether you would like to keep it or not .

Fast-forward to her death in 2017 and we're cleaning out the basement: sis-in-law found the carton of records. SHE WAS MAD. Those records moved with us TWICE when they were supposed to go to Goodwill or the pawn shop or somewhere else for someone to enjoy. Not sit collecting dust on THREE different basements. Mom loved playing storage keeper, even though NO one was asking her too. Everyone asked her to get rid of things. Everyone.

One trick that I came up with for those small little hooks or that come with something that you put together or a camera with those kinds of things, is that I put them in a small clear sandwich bag or a snack bag with a note that says what it goes to and the color if that's helpful or any other details. Then if I come across it later and I realize that that original item is gone I wouldn't have a problem discarding and I wouldn't have to think about what it is. Sometimes I also tape small items to the bottom of a product so that I know where they go and what they're for.

Tip to avoid UFOs that come with items you're buying (e.g. the ikea hooks, extra screws, a special sized screw-driver that comes with a piece of furniture, replacement parts etc.): put them in a small zip-bag, tag the bag with what this is and what it's for and then store it in a bin or a drawer that is reserved for these items only. That way, when you're looking for one of these, you'll know where to find it, and also when decluttering you'll know what this is and if you can, like those unused hooks, declutter it or whether there's a risk that you actually might need this later.

It's not my style, but I have then seen other people loving the ripped jeans look! I prefer to give them one more chance at life with someone else before they're recycled (Though if they're very thin or ripped in places like the crotch area then I would just send them to fabric recycling)

Thank you for sharing! I have gotten to the point of just getting rid of stuff that has been the "just in case." I place them all in a bag for donations. I am also lucky like you where I have two boys so that I only have to purchase items for the older one and occassionally some items for the younger one. I then donate their clothing to our neighbor with three boys. It makes me feel good when we do so.

Empty containers are very handy. They're going to get thrown out eventually, so they're perfect for things like cleaning paintbrushes or decanting wood treatments or mixing resin. Invariably those are all things that can only be done once and then the container is ruined. Clothes come two main varieties, those that get worn generally and those that are kept on hand for tasks that are going to wreck them. Old and tatty clothes are perfect for that second category. If that broken chair arm is wood then you just put in some wood glue, clamp and it is stronger than the wood itself. I don't think it is possible to have too many spare screws as long as they're sorted by size. A lifesaver when working around the house or on a project as there is almost always a screw on hand that will work. Those shoes did not look worn out. Pretty much use shoes until the sole wears through.

#17, for my son since he’s an only child i donate things to a charity for foster kids. They have it set up like a store for the families to go and pick out what they need. It’s free for them so I love that. Most of my son’s stuff is in really good condition because he’s 3. He’s starting to be harder on his clothes so I won’t be able to donate everything but every 6 months I have enough gathered that I take a trip there and give them whatever we have. Even the baby furniture.

I’m thinking now if I should get rid of my ironing board. I almost never iron my clothes. I wear clothes that need ironing a few times a year but I normally get them ironed at the laundry outside. I only use my iron when I forgot to get my shirts ironed and I need them ASAP. The plus or having an Ironing Board is that my last girlfriend confessed than when she was at my place for the first time and saw the ironing board she made an assumption that I must be a decent man 😅

Very apropos for the season. hehe. The situation with Wayfair is a bit crazy! Congrats on all the arms you have now. AHH. Glad you took care of them. I went to a convention a couple of years ago and they gave so much free stuff. I definitely didn't take or keep whatever was given to me. I can't imagine how much people did not get rid of that went there. That's great that you were able to gain some usable free stuff! That's good! I giggled at the standing desk moving up with you on top of it. I noticed today the shoes I use to workout and go for all my walks in have holes all throughout them. . .but they feel so great and I've had them for about nine years, non-stop using them. Guess it is time though to replace them. Another enjoyable list. Hope you and your family are doing well! -Victoria

Spare parts really saved me 1k lately. I have changed my bed from 160cm width to 180cm and instead of buying a new bed and selling the old one which would come with a loss of at least 1.5k I paid a handy man to cut the replacement side boards for my bed and fit it in front and rear thus widening my bed.

I try to give small things like extra hooks and screws a proper home so they’re not UFOs, but I probably keep too many! The other UFOs - unfinished (craft) objects are also a challenge! But finishing them counts as decluttering :) I have a problem with keeping nice glass jars to reuse - I limit to one shelf, but I’m going to go through and recycle a few of them today. Your standing desk looks really nice and I love the patio/sunroom area decor.

#5 terrifies me. I'm such a crafter that i have a billion half-finished projects. But I'm starting to learn which things I'll give my time to and which ones i won't, and I'm almost completely finished decluttering my arts and crafts. If i got an hour of free time, now i would paint or read. I still have hobbies, but they're pared down and more deliberate now.

For the past few years, I have only bought one type of sock, and only in black. That eliminates the issue of mis-matching. Socks do still go missing or get torn sometimes, so I use the "orphaned" and holey ones to make pet toys for my local animal shelter.

I've spent the last few years working on things. Free stuff was a huge weakness for me. Something I've really embraced is that even the tiniest step in the right direction, repeated over weeks, months, and then years will add up. Therefore, celebrate the small wins and small changes and just keep going after a slip up. Now, years down the road, I can say no to free stuff or receive it and hand on to a better person or place.

I try to avoid keeping empty plastic containers in general. I prefer reusing glass as I tend to use them for fermenting, making cleaners, vinegars etc and am trying to completely eliminate plastics. Especially since most plastic containers are pretty toxic and only a few types are really safe to reuse.

I save empty peanut butter jars. LOL. They're clear and big enough to aggregate several items that might otherwise become dusty, gross, and lost in the cellar. (Like a set of matching drawer knobs, screws, small parts, my collection of random bits of unknown origin, small sharp kitchen items, wine tchotchkes, etc.) They're an upgrade from Grampy's glass babyfood jars that held small metal bits and bobs. (No broken glass if I drop them.) In my household, it takes forever to finish an entire jar of PB, so I don't have a lot of overstock.
