I'd say I'm at level 4/5 but with a large digital backlog. I have lots of photos yet to edit and upload for example and my watch later list is quite long. I also have clutter like notes from my degree which I want to digitalise as I need them for my career but haven't got to it yet.

Thank you for this video, Seve! I’d say I’m living levels 5-6 and totally enjoying this way of life. I also started about 10 years ago. At the moment my older son has moved out and I live with husband and our 8-year-old son. The little one has probably more stuff than we, but compared to the majority of people around us I’d say our son is minimalist as well 😅

Level 2/3. I’ve declutterred a lot and now shifting towards selling the things of value and organizing what I have. Once I sell the things and organize what I have left, will do another round of decluttering. Have limited new purchases to essentials and very conscious and intentional about what I buy. It’s coming along but declutterring is hard work and takes time.

I’m was at 2… transitioning to 3, the beginning of a new era for me!! I hope I can sustain it, I’m trying to confront the coping way I reach for external things (stuff, shopping, relationships, drugs, etc) to comfort the internal world, it’s all connected. It’s a journey! I hope everyone has a love filled day today!

You are literally living my dream! (I am definitely leaning more between 6 and 7; I say this because I do have the "I only keep that which I can use and that which sufficiently and efficiently meets my needs and purposes" mindset [or the "survivalist/wilderness" mindset I call it because wilderness survivalism [bushcraft] is where I originally derived the mindset] even though I do not mind more "wanted" things here and there) And "Things no longer have appeal but experiences do." really does summarize minimalism, and is actually what we are to seek after! ❤

Currently at 4-5. I grew up with parents who kept everything, so I had to fight the hoarding mindset I learned from them to get there! It originates from a scarcity mentality in their case, as well as, for my Dad, the need to keep extensive documentation about everything he’s ever done. They are still at Level 1 even now, acquiring more stuff every year. Being in their large home stuffed to the seams makes me feel stressed and anxious. I’m really glad I worked through my own hoarding tendencies and have a very different approach to life.

@LissandaEloria
@LissandaEloria 3 ай бұрын
@@LadyPelikan Yes, you certainly can. I believe the key is to think about how you want to live, and what you value in life, and be guided by those. Also to look at limiting beliefs and challenge them: are they really serving you? My parents hoard because they have a scarcity mentality: they believe they must hang on to everything that might possibly be useful on day, otherwise they might find they need it and can’t get it. They are hedging their bets against something unlikely to ever happen, and using up their space to do it, completely sacrificing their quality of life in the process. If you can reflect on the beliefs driving your hoarding tendencies and replace them, change comes naturally. My parents don’t seem to be able to see this, but the fact you are here watching this shows you’re open to reflecting on what’s driving the hoarding, and willing to make a change. You can absolutely not be a hoarder if you prefer not to; you just need to make the decision and commit to it 😀

I'm at level 6, I have the bare minimum for my apartment. Bed, table to eat, and desk to work at, that's all the furniture I have, and I'm happy as can be. Because I don't have a lot of things at home I'm "forced" to spend most of my time outside in nature or making friends. I also have saved so much money from this life over the past 4 years that I can easily afford to travel to different states/countries during breaks from work. The only real decoration I have is a tiny snake plant I've named Ted and a stuffed bear I've had since I was a child. And I feel like this is all I need to be happy

I feel attacked at level 2 😅 I’ve been on my journey for a few months and after getting rid of what I thought was a lot I still have hundreds of DVDs, books, and video games I’ve never touched and probably never will. Just took pictures of the more collectible ones to put on eBay this weekend, and looking for a place to sell the game xtra clutter even if for a handful of dollars. But it’s a process and I’m working on it after realizing that this massive collection I’ve gathered is based on childhood trauma of poverty and now that I’m an adult with a good job I can afford to buy all this nonsense. I’m ready to let go. Thank you for this video, it came at the perfect time for me.

Jorge....two KZbin channels really help me, because they verbalize their thoughts about the items as they declutter: 1) the oldest videos from Erica Lucas when she first started her decluttering journey with rooms absolutely stuffed full of boxes, and 2) Dana K. White who has a no mess method that is not overwhelming and makes consistent progress (look at her older videos of "1 hour better" and "container concept" for examples of her 5 step process. Hope this helps!

would you buy them again if you had the money to? Can you afford to get a better version of those things? Try to find out if there's a place that gives you money per weight of things. If not donate them and then get second hand things/refurbished things, but make sure to focus on quality durability and you have to love the item, all 3 of those. If not don't buy anything. That's the trap with second hand. Just need to remember those rules before buying.

how much time does it take you to sell all of them, really? put an hourly wage on that. Then see if its worth your time trying to sell them or giving them away would perhaps even cost you less time? I personnally would only try to sell loose items that extend a certain value. Say anything less then 200 dollar for ex. i dont even bother trying to sell

Those "things" deserve to be used by persons who need them so consider donating to Good Will, Red Cross, Habitat and you get a tax write off. It doesn't matter what you paid for them consider the value of your TIME messing around with them for no purpose.

I have the same problem. I recently put them out for sale but some of them got sold much cheaper that I wanted, and then I was just happy for anything and I like how I’m the one who make them smile, I love it when I find things cheap and it’s fun to give that to others. I do have a lot of things that probably won’t be sold, but then I’ll give them away to a shelter or a school or something. You will never get the money back you have for them, but you will gain the spaces you empty and a feeling of getting things done when they leave your home. Thats something that can’t be bought.

Something that helped my was this sentence : 'you have not wasted your money by not selling it now, it was wasted when you bought it and never used it'. This made it easier for me to not sell everything. Only items above a certain value. Hope it helps you too

Level 4. I've gone through a massive decluttering episode this year, and I'm left with a set of possessions that I currently consider to be a functional minimum for my lifestyle. I occasionally will purchase things on impulse, but it's never to add anything new, but to upgrade/replace things that I already have and use on a daily basis. I've been sleeping on a futon on the floor for years and see no reason to get a classic bed anymore. Most furniture is gone too.

My husband and I were at a 4 up until we moved this year, now we're more of a 5. Ironcially, our social circle changing in the way you described meant we had to get a second table for Bible studies and family meals, because we needed more seating we could move around and more places to put a book or a plate. As much as we enjoyed the empty space in the house, we valued having places for guests more.

I’m 3-4, my husband is 2, and my 2 and 6 y.o. kids are extremely 1. 😊 I do decluttering their stuff too, but I want it to be as slight as possible, so that they don’t feel they don’t own their stuff at all. When my 6 y.o. son got an unwanted toy for his birthday I offered him to sell it and a couple of old toys as well and buy just one, but the one he would actually love. He said yes, and I made sure he felt the benefit of this decision. The problem is you can’t be truly minimal with kids. They need stuff as stimulation for their nervous system. I don’t want them to grow up in a minimal environment only to fall into an insane consumerism after moving away because their parents wouldn’t let them anything they wanted. I think a person isn’t becoming minimalist under pressure… I hope to gain that 5 level eventually. It’s so nice of you to focus on mind while describing those levels.

We see this with food, too. I had an ex, as just one example, who was never allowed to have any kind of junk food. None. Then he turned 18, moved out, and blimped up. Soda, fruit snacks, freezer meals, fast food...he absolutely binged on all the stuff he'd been forbidden to touch. Plus, look at the scarcity mindset a lot of older people who went through the 30s and 40s have/had. They know what it's like to have nothing so many of them cling to EVERYTHING. And what about those who get so used to having nothing that the rest of the world is too overwhelming and overstimulating for them? How will they handle anything? Time will tell how the children of today's extreme minimalist parents turn out...

You have done a great job of explaining the process/stages of minimalism. I was a Lev 2.5 to 3 about 10 years ago. Then I had to clean out my parents' home (they were between Lev 1 and Lev 2) which was a real eye opener for me. About the same time, coincidentally, I was reading Marie Kondo's book. Both of these events started me getting very curious about, and seeking out more info about minimalism. The book "Goodbye Things" is one of my favorites although I'll never be the minimalist that the author is. We sold our big home in the suburbs, moved into a small home in the country, let go of about 75% of our possessions. Today, I'm a solid Lev 5 and probably will remain there. The benefits have been HUGE and some were unexpected...freedom of my time and also a peaceful home were the original goals for me....obtaining more financial freedom was an unexpected outcome.

4,5 for me :-) Having kids, a partner for some of the time and also inheriting posessions makes minimalism an uphill thing. When I was younger it was a solid 6, but I was often criticised for it. "Neurotic" and "sterile surroundings" is what I was told. I managed to ignore it as I always valued the clarity and peace it gave me and I aspire to return to it when my youngest child leaves the house. Until then, I live a good compromise and living with a loved one far outweighs further simplifying. Let me also say that I was very grateful for the minimalism movement when it finally took off. It was good to see that I was not alone, least of all "neurotic" in my endeavour not to be weighed down by things. I have considered myself a minimalist for over 40 of my currently 58 years and I will continue to be one. Thank you for all your lovely videos Seve.

This was the time when minimalism hit me on the face. Now it is 6 years later still trying to reach level 5. But with kids and a well organized clutter lover husband we were able to move from stage 3 to 4. For me was hard accepting the mindset that decluttering will be a part of my everyday life. I am definitely at level 4. I am using up things and throwing things away, bringing things to goodwill if they're still okay but I don't use them, I'm trying to recycle as best as I can, and I feel it gives me rest to realize I know what I have, or when I'm down to the last thing of something. Sometimes I use up but decide not to re-buy. I question everything I own and it's function. I feel especially as a woman, you are told you need so many more clothes or products, this is not always the case. I enjoy watching these videos and seeing the responses of people who are also conscious of their environment and what they consume. I care about the planet and I always have, but I feel I am only alone. If we all pick up some trash outdoors sometimes, and throw it away in the trashbin, we all help a little bit.

We are at Level 1.5… not hoarders by any means, but our apartment is way too small for three kids, so even when things are cleaned up there are lots of things which don’t fit anywhere. I am constantly throwing things out or selling things, but the inflow from the kids and hubs is just too fast to keep up with. And yes it is totally overwhelming
@elliw.
@elliw. 4 ай бұрын
I know exactly what you mean. What helped us is our "1 in 2 out" system. Which means that for example when a kid needs new shirts because the previous size does not fit anymore we bought (or thrifted) 1 shirt for every 2 shirts that we got rid of. It helped a lot to reduce the clothing until everyone had a reasonable amount. Same with artwork, school supplies, toys, etc. We had too much. Also we used up all our pencils, notebooks, toiletries, cleaning stuff, etc. And afterwards replaced everything with only half the amount we had before. Our apartment feels so much bigger now. And we don't miss the unused piles at all.

@@HosCreates If you have kids of the same gender who are similar in age that's a good option to keep your costs low. And of course if the clothes are still in a very good condition. Younger kids deserve their own unique and new stuff as well.

#6. I own 45 things. A “thing” can be a plastic shoebox which holds all kitchen utensils, or cosmetics, or tools, desk supplies. If I can't buy a SINGLE highlighter, I'm not buying a pack of 6! To fill up my box! As Fumio Sasaki said “I can move out of my home just as easily as the time it takes someone else to order a coffee.” My only large items are my bed, small table, chair, desktop computer, and a suitcase. EDIT: By popular demand added my list. Don't count what I'm wearing, food or consumables or condo/hurricane supplies or major appliances/wall mounted TV (lol). NOT COUNTED: Handbag, Wallet, Sm.Documents box, Phone, Glasses/case, Coat, Gloves - They are ON ME. NOT COUNTED: CONSUMABLEs: Food, Cleaning Supplies incl trash can, tote of spare supplies GENERAL LIST give or take: 9 LIFE TOOLS: 1 shoebox cosmetics 1 shoebox dental 1 shoebox health 3 towels, cloths 2 Electronics: Desktop Computer & printer, iPad 1 Suitcase 22 CLOTHING: 5 pr shoes 15 garments 2 other handbags 4 FURNITURE: Adjustable Bed & Linens Chair & Ottoman Table Clock 4 KITCHEN Vitamix 6 dishes and 8 jars stick vacuum Shoebox utensils and towels

I'm somewhere between 4-5 and now a bit stuck. Over the last probably 5 years I have let go of easily 80%+ of my stuff. I have no issue letting things go. But I also have depression issues and it holds me back having better control and enjoyment of my life. I struggle keeping things tidy despite the reduced amount of belongings. But it does help immensely that what I have has been reduced significantly.

Somewhere around 4-5, minimalism is a part of my life. I enjoy the increased freedom. I carefully consider both things coming into my life and things going out of my life. I still make mistakes from time to time with impulsivity, but not often. I generally feel like my life would be better if I was slightly more minimalistic, but I feel I am close to what I consider my ideal level of life complexity.

Call myself a minimalist would be a self insult. I am just taking advantage of minimalistic techniques to have an easier life, easier to clean, easier to get ready in the morning, easier to cook. Also, easier to get new things because I have space now. That part is the tricky one.

being a minimalist is a frame of mind , it can include: eco friendly practices, an aesthetic, only having enough for your needs etc but the true mind frame is to make life simpler and easier that having less but quality is more . I think I'm at level 3, almost 4, but right now I live with roommates and have to live with their clutter as well. So while I don't have complete control over how many things are around me, I use gratitude and caretaking as a way to maintain a relationship with them. It's also a sacrifice I'm willing to make, given these two people are dear friends who help me live more intentionally in all other areas of my life. I like that you include those intangible dimensions, because this is one example of times you must compromise 'perfect' physical minimalism in order to access the nourishment of certain aligning relationships. I wish our pantry, fridge, shared closets, etc. were more decluttered and minimal, but I can handle it for the sake of being around people I love like family. And I'm re-affirming my commitment to owning less stuff when I do eventually live alone again💕

I sit in level 3 but sometimes waiver back to level 2 at times. I have embraced the reality that I like stuff and enjoy over the top ecclectic styles so minimalism is not going to work for me. But I have become more conscientious about surrounding myself with what I will truly use and/or enjoy. I have made changes over the years and am continuing to do so, building little changes on top of the older ones. Like buying less and using more of what I have already, or committing to say one art group instead of trying every single one I learn about. This aproach has been working so well for me. I don't feel like I'm deprived or living in lack. I feel like I have abundance and feel secure.

I'm currently working through using up consumables like extra candles, pantry overstock and skincare that doesn't get used very often to make a bit more space in smaller areas of our home. It keeps us intentional and with the chaos of every day life allows me the freedom of 10 minute tidy ups to tackle most of the house! :)

I'm between levels 5-6, desiring 6. I've been studying minimalism and working towards it at my own learning curve since leaving the military in 2005. Tiny Houses drew me in first, I started level 4 upon starting college. My desire to feel lighter and more grounded with intentionality keep me moving. I do a packing party every year November 30th, during the end of the year. I keep an active inventory including an Everything That Remains list if I were to embark on that level 7. Great video, thanks so much! The reason I feel I'm moving to level 6 is because of a few key points you shared, mainly that I am limiting myself to the interests of the now, and walking, pursuing stoicism in my own life, and walking, spending time with my wife, and trying to end the pursuit of replacing or acquiring items I soon find myself donating, often within just a few months. I am still rectifying and paying for the mistakes of the past, including a time period of several years where I psychotically defended my desire to travel and live lightly by replacing my vehicle to feel free and have a taste of the new.

Like others I’m 4-5 with a heavy lean into 5. And like others have said, I’m actually happy here. I learned decades ago that my environment is very important, and completely empty doesn’t relax me any more than cluttered. That was also around the time I coined the phrase “opulent minimalism” for my style, as I like lots of negative space in rooms and few items on surfaces but I like any items/furnture to be beautifully designed or detailed. A real balance between having few possessions, but they truly bring me joy. It’s the same with my relationships and activities. The ethos permeates my entire life.

Level 6 in mindset( not physical due to kid at home) Level 7 at times during 10 day vipassana mediatation retreats. Minimalism not only simplifies living but also leaving the world peacefully. Non Attachment reduces the stress and the less we have the less we are bothered about things/people / opinions/ thoughts etc… making less room for worry. Death inevitable will a piece of cake ready at any time. And living till then the journey so smooth and abundant with peace and joy.

We are at Level 5. Decluttering is done. The Social, Physical, Phone, Life, decluttering has been accomplished. We know what we need to live, and our lives are sorted. I used to have friends in stage 1. And we just could not agree to move forwards. So I had to let those people go. It was too maddening for me. The saying goes, "If you clean up the periphery, the outsides, (i.e. your house, home, and yard) successfully, then the insides follow suit, in due time." Life Will Get better. People cannot live well at all, if all they look at day in and day out is a mess of clutter and stale food, dirty dishes piled in the sink unwashed, and take away boxes and trash piled up. It screams "Help Me, but No I Don't Need Help, Your Help !!"

Agree 100% I think it was in "Hoarders" they explained it was pointless to declutter for someone else, even if it was a loved one and you live with this person. Because the hoarding is deeply personal and often a symptom of something else. By cleaning for them, you treat a symptom but not the root cause and 1) it will came back if the hoarder did not treat the issue 2) They will resist and even resent you for trying to help them.

Great video. I'm between 4 and 5. But as an artist with tons of material it really is hard to fully declutter. Collage artists like me need really a lot of stuff, I have a huge collection of papers and magazines and other art materials. Throwing away my own artworks gives me a hard time but is also liberating. I am a total minimalist when it comes to clothing. I own three pairs of shoes. And when I was 30 I sold all my belongings and lived in an old bus. Best thing I have ever done. PS: It's much easier to live clutterfree when you are younger.

Also, I live with someone at level 2…definitely an organized hoarder who would probably lean more to level 1 if he didn’t live with me. It will take me a little longer than most but I’ll get there slowly. Level 5 is where I want to be. I plan my free days around decluttering specific areas so I am mindful about it but still have a hard time letting go of sentimental and what if one day items. Just watching these videos and being aware of the minimal lifestyle is your first step. If this is to be a path for you, then you will begin to declutter naturally. When the time is right it will be easy and effortless. One day you’ll get out a trash bag and start throwing away trash and you’ll be on your way out of level 1. I hope you will also consider some counseling as well to work on your grief or other traumas. For me, the best things about decluttering are these: it doesn’t cost anything, you do it in the privacy of your own home, you can do it at your own pace, the results are immediately noticeable (unlike dieting, for example), and you get an endorphin high as you go which makes you want to keep going. Best wishes to you.

It’s hard because we live in a very small condo with a child on the way and need to make room. He can actually shed tears over objects from his childhood and holding them makes him relive experiences vividly. I can’t make him get rid of that stuff without feeling like a monster, so I don’t know what we’re going to do? He also has dozens of boxes of stuff in his parent’s basement. They’ll never be able to move and simplify their lives with all that stuff

If he's unable to let go of those things but you really have to make room, then asking him kindly to research some storage solutions (other than other people's places) for the things he wants to keep but don't need on daily basis could be a good thing to do. A difficult situation I understand so wishing you all the best 🌱

It’s incredible that you describe the mental shifts that one would go through. It rings true to me that this would be the case and it gives me hope to continue.

This is a good example of leveling. I started with level 2 as status and is currently on Level 4 and I'm trying to maintain & build a strong habit at this level. I felt a certain joy when you discussed level 5 as I am really planning on practicing intentional living. My mindset is to enjoy this journey.

I started living a minimalist lifestyle about 5 years ago, and now, at the age of 59, I have reached the sixth level... I feel great! As far as I can tell from your video, I'm much more of a minimalist than you, because in my opinion, your apartment is too big and full of unnecessary furniture... I mean, unnecessary things FOR ME. I currently live in only 14 square meters, including the bathroom. Of course, I don't have a bed, a chair, a closet, a TV, or a phone (I do have a laptop, though. I have to because I'm a writer, I've written 66 long novels so far, as well as numerous short stories, philosophical works, and computer science works.) But the thing is, I still think it's too much the amount of my stuff. I try to fit everything I own into one large military backpack and possibly a handbag. Although I have not yet reached this goal, I am very close to it. Unfortunately, achieving this goal is not easy, because I need a LOT of tools that an average, "normal" person doesn't: I plan to quit my job in a few years and want to live far from civilization, off-grid, without electricity. I have been studying all kinds of bushcraft skills and tricks thoroughly for some time now, my hobby is "survival in extreme conditions", I have been following the raw carnivore diet for years, i.e. I almost always eat meat and offal raw, I also eat all kinds of insects (mostly those also raw), and I swallow live earthworms without batting an eye if there is nothing better... Believe it or not, but this diet has improved my health a lot! And I'm happy like that! In any case, this kind of life requires more stuff than if I were to live in hotels and eat junk food in restaurants all the time... So you can say that in a few years (5 years at the latest) I will move on to level 7... I'm very happy this way, even now, I don't feel poor (in fact, I probably have a lot more money saved than the average person...), I only regret one thing: why didn't I find this lifestyle and philosophy at least 30 years before... Anyway, I try to live according to the rules and recommendations of the Stoic philosophy, it is also extremely useful in reducing stress, and in my opinion it fits perfectly with the minimalist way of life, it is no coincidence that the most famous ancient Stoics also almost all followed a minimalist life.

I wish I could get rid of my phone. I'm gonna need it because I have little children and in case of emergency they will need to reach me, but when they will be adults I will happily get rid of my phone.

I think I'm in between 4 and 5, I feel done, looking for more places to declutter but there is none. I have what I need, everything I own serves a purpose and my whole home is organized and easy to clean. I feel at peace and feel calm coming home every day. I was a shopaholic (still have those tendencies, I just love walking around in stores and shopping) but I have gotten to much better at not buying duplicates. Last time I was in the store I found a beautiful, soft robe and I loved it and wanted to so bad, but I asked my self "do I need this?" and whether I would do the 1 in 1 out rule if I bought it, and decided that no, I have a robe that I love already, it is not broken, I do not need a new one. Nor do I have room for another one. That is the biggest mindset change ever for me, the idea of not buying more when I already have it.

I'm at levels 4-5. I still have items of sentiment that I'm working through but I am capable of traveling and existing very, very lightly. My sentimental items and books are my last true categories to be reduced further and I have been working on them. I recently moved international and took only clothing and school supplies and will be quite happy for 2 years with just those possessions. When I am able to live alone after my studies I will live a very minimal life physically and sort out the last of my belongings. I have a very minimalist mindset though and definitely only keep things that serve a purpose. Sometimes that purpose is joy! It's a journey and I'm happy with the progress I've made :)

I'm at level 4, working toward level 5 (my end goal). My home is very simplified and organized, I'm just working on shed/garage storage now. My goal is to be able to open any closet/cupboard/drawer/storage box and be able to quickly and easily assess what and how much is in there. I want there to be plenty of space for more things if i need it, but to not feel the need to acquire new things.

I`m at level 2 for now. I was on level 1 around 3 years ago and didn't notice a problem with it. Now I will be more comfortable on level 3, yet there's a very important thing: you either need to live with your partner or, even better, alone. I might feel comfy at level 4, yet level 5 is not my zone. As a zoologist -- I do have pets and bonded with things friends gift me. Yet I am currently trying to reduce my load of books to a smaller amount, keeping only those that helped me or I will reread in the future time.

good explanation to the levels. Sometimes you can switch from one to other. of example a retreat will do that. this minimalism thing came to us, because we owned too much and couldn’t get loose. It overwhelmed us. Our eye was on consuming, because it said you need it, for better feeling. But we didn’t felt better. So we challenged to select what we realy need for good life. And let it go, when it has done its purpose. In past time I was forced to minimalism. Now I see the good thing by this time. I didn’t miss anything, but thought missing. Now I live consciously in that state, estimate sunlight, warmth, good talk, health, thats all i need basically. Drive mostly with bice and wear second hand.
