Yea , I like the sound of that muffler. Love my little 1980 sr250, so reliable , could use more power and more top speed but around town is perfect. I was able to find any same year/model in San Francisco for $400. Had a clean title and only 4k miles. I swapped out the best parts on my salvaged title bike and made one pretty nice complete bike... Good luck with your project, have fun

Thanks for the reply. I drilled a 3/8" hole in my muffler baffle but it's still a bit quiet for me. I may cut off the header pipe like you did and onstall a Sportster SE muflfler that I have lying around. I'd like a bit more volume and (hopefully) depth in the tone. Thanks again. Jeff

hey man, i know this question is old, but maybe it will help others. at those higher revs (throttle open wide) your jets in the carb arent allowing the flow necessary to keep it smooth. if you swap the jets for a stage higher you will notice a huge difference. this lurching happens alot when you change the muffle/barrel. hope this helps someone

Still riding with the exhaust as it is. I'm not sure that I will add a baffle or not. Yep, I cut off before the old exhaust and welded on the shorty muffler. It sounds nice enough. In a perfect world I would baffle it to make it a bit quieter and deeper.

I don't remember which website, but just search EMGO shorty muffler on google shopping and find the best price including shipping as long as the website has a good rating. There are a lot of online vendors for it.

Sounds nice. do you have a video after adding the baffle? Did you cut off your exhaust pipe to add the EMGO?

Just picked up my 1980 sr250 today. oh man does it need some work. Anyone here like to discuss what they have learned, I'd be stoked to here from you.

you need to put the crossover pipe back on, you're losing power and messing with the carbs, thats why you had to play with the idle. what do the insides of the mufflers look like? black, moist soot?

I know I'm a bit late but I found one of these bikes that had been in storage for a long time but still in great condition. I need to find a gas tank though and I was wondering what you ended up putting on it and how the fit was. I want to avoid having to modify the frame mounts if I can but I will if I have to. Not super hopeful I'll get a reply but I would like to find something sooner than later

I'm late for reply as well, but I actually used the original tank with band-aid fixes. JB-Weld on the exterior (this alone will still leak) and Red Kote sealer on the inside. It seemed to hold fine. Honestly though the real fix is going on ebay and buying a tank for about $150. No modifications needed that way. I sold the bike a few years ago, but it was probably $300 in ebay parts from being a solid machine.

Where did you get that exhaust pipe?

Myn just got rusty on the downside... until there was a hole. That was loud xD

this video is good, but it doesn't do those little 250's justice. and they are loud.
