SR 34067 Tangmere was the motive power from Manchester Piccadilly to Carlisle for todays Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express over Shap and returning via the Settle Carlisle line as far as Hellifield, we first see the Spam Can from Scout Green through to Shap Summit with eleven on and 57315 assisting on the rear and watch out for the perfect smoke ring at 1:46, with an unfortunate late departure from Carnforth the return was also running late, we see Tangmere rounding the corner from Mallerstang Edge towards Angrholme and up to Aisgill Summit, thanks to Steve for the crack and company today and thanks for watching.

Great video Nige at some great locations. It turned out to be a ideal day to see a steam loco working hard climbing Shap with some great exhaust plumes. I spotted either yours or Steve's car near Shap summit so was expecting to see some videos from there. I was a bit further south at Salterwath and at Langwathby for the return leg.

Thanks Alistair, yes much better conditions than the last time and ideal for the exhaust, unfortunate with the delays but things worked out in the end, that was my car and when we got there there was still some mist but no wind so we thought we’d try it as it’s a while since we were last there, cheers 👍

Beautiful video 👍 In its working day in the early sixties , my comprehensive school in Woking was right by the line. So we used to wait for the Bournemouth Belle, to see who was pulling it. It was always 1pm, as she came steaming through and it was either Battle of Britain class or West Country and Tangmere was one of them. All the drivers used to blow the whistle as they passed by, such a beautiful moment when I think about it now. For your information, the school was Monument Hill C.S.

Thanks Brian that’s much appreciated, the conditions were very good on Shap for a change which was to Tangmere’s benefit, the delay started at Carnforth where the mains water pressure was very low so time was lost filling the tender which subsequently had a knock on affect on the return, Tangmere was originally due to come off at Preston but after issues on the previous WCME taking her off at Hellifield enabled the tour to be back on time departing Preston, cheers nige👍

A FARCICAL CON !!! You pay a lot of money for a supposed "Steam train ride" only to find they have added a DIESEL loco to the train, which quite clearly is doing a good 50% OF THE WORK as you can hear the diesel roaring past the camera!!! So just when life gets interesting going up hills like Shap with a steam loco, where the engine would have to work hard and give out a thunderous continuous roar, with huge smoke effects. The Diesel provides most of the power. So the steam loco has to do little work, and can almost saunter up the Hill. Without the normal grand smoke & sounds effects, you would have seen on this gradient in steam days. It also means that professional train timers cannot time the train & work out how much power the steam loco is exerting, or exact speeds over any quarter mile section. Indeed putting a heavy vehicle on the rear of a train (unless banking on gradients) was forbidden in BR days, because its DANGEROUS. So I certainly would never waste my money on such a Farcical CON. Much better in Germany were steam excursions don't have Diesels attached, and as seen on a number of occasions have reached speeds approaching a 100mph. Indeed the 02.0201 Pacific has reached 106mph in preservation (it has achieved speeds as high as 113.3mph in East German Railways service in the 1960's) It also has the largest driving wheels fitted to ANY Pacific of 7ft 6in. NOTE: I began Driving steam back in the 1970's before becoming a Qualified Locomotive Mechanical Engineer, & I've worked for many Railways around the World.
@nige7577
@nige7577 11 ай бұрын
Unfortunately due to the CDL issues at WCRC it was air con stock that was on this train so no open windows which kills most of the sound for the passengers, also the tour was well behind schedule on both legs so the diesel was working well to claw back back some lost time.
