Installing and removing 28.99 dub compatible bottom brackets using a uniquely designed sram dub bottom bracket toolset www.firstcompo...
With this new-to-the-market in 2019 unique toolset, you can easily install and remove 41mm 42mm and 46mm bottom brackets that accept sram's 28.99 millimeter crank. A BSA DUB bottom bracket is also available. A wrench specifically for the BSA bottom bracket is available separate to this press-fit toolset. For the purposes of demonstration we show how to use the toolset using the 41 millimeter bottom bracket as the example.
A light smear of grease on both the bottom bracket and the bb shell makes sure you can smoothly install and remove a sram dub bottom bracket. Installation is done one side at a time starting with the drive side. Once piece fits into the bb shell on the non-drive side. One side has a 41mm external diameter. The other side has a 28.99mm external diameter which will fit directly into the bottom bracket's inner diameter. It's actually this piece that presses the bottom bracket into the bb shell. An 8 mm allen wrench is all you need to easily press any 41, 42 or 46 millimeter bottom bracket into the bottom bracket shell
When the bottom bracket is fully pressed into the bottom bracket shell you unscrew the bolt from the press-in bracket.
Having done one side you can then install the other bottom bracket cup into the left side. The difference here is that you need to reverse the tool's drive piece since it must now rest inside and brace against the already installed bottom bracket cup. The 41mm face is turned outwards and the 28.99 face is turned inwards. This fits into the already installed bottom bracket. Then it's a matter of
When the bottom bracket cup is installed simply remove the pieces and store them back in the case
Removal is just as easy. The split steel-hitch which interfaces directly with the bottom bracket cup fits onto the end of the driver. The press-fit bracket becomes the vessel that holds the bottom bracket cup as you are pressing it out of the bottom bracket shell. It needs the right fitting adapter in order to sit exactly against the bottom bracket shell
There is a separate ring adapter for 41 42 and 46 millimeter bottom bracket shells in this toolset. We use the 41mm adapter here.
The split steel hitch is fitted to the driver inside the bottom bracket shell. The split steel hitch expands over the end of the driver then further expands inside the bottom bracket cup that you wish to remove. That way the bolt is held perfectly square to the bb cup once the retaining cup fits flush against the bottom bracket shell.
Turning the 8 mm allen wrench presses the bottom bracket out of the bottom bracket shell. The tool and the bottom bracket cup comes out together. All that remains is to remove the bottom bracket cup from the retaining cup
To remove the other side the split steel hitch can be mounted onto the driver and engaged with the bottom bracket cup in one movement because you have more room-the bb on that side has been removed. Press out the cup and retrieve it. Remove the adapter. Pack everything away ready for next time. Having used the toolset once or twice you'll find it is possible for bottom bracket installation or removal on both sides to take no more than one minute.
