A few years ago, I bought an early 1980's Bianchi touring bike. In researching it, I found a potential recall on the forks from about 1990. I contacted Bianchi trying to confirm whether my forks were actually dangerous to use or not - not expecting much. Once I started talking to the right person, they apologized that they didn't have a replacement 1" threaded fork for me, but if I shipped my frame and fork to them they would send me a brand new frame and fork - a 2019 Bianchi Volpe that I love!

I used to be a big Fox fan, but they've just gotten beyond the realm of what I can afford for a fork. RockShox became my next favorite for continuing to offer good quality at affordable prices. I'm not talking about the OEM stuff that comes on cheap bikes, but their aftermarket forks. Fox pricing starts at what a whole entry-level MTB costs. That's just asinine. Good on SRAM to honor the warranty. I had a similar experience with Park Tools where I inquired on ordering a part that I lost for my scale and they just asked me for my address and had one in the mail to me the next day for free.

I didn't have the original receipt, the shop I bought it from at was long gone, the dealer didn't think they would replace it under warranty as I couldn't prove I was the original owner. I called Trek tech support and the guy said "Send me some pictures of where you've been on the bike". So I did:: all over the US, England, France etc. Trek gave me a new frame and fork under warranty. which I thought was cool.

If it is a government mandated recall, there is no time limit. But they usually collect the recalled part. If you own a 1984 car with an unresolved recall, they have to fix it even today.
@cup_and_cone Жыл бұрын
Technically there's no time limit specified for safety recalls, but legally speaking, the limit is within a 'reasonable' period. It's not unreasonable people would still have a bicycle from the 90's still in their garage they ride once in a blue moon, so SRAM did the right thing here. On the other hand, expecting a Dodge dealership to fix your '84 Dodge probably won't happen. Parts have been out of production, ownership of the brand has changed, product life expectancy has long been exceeded, etc. Ultimately it comes down to whether they want to fight it in court or just suck it up and find a solution...the latter is significantly cheaper, so that tends to be the way they go (unless addressing the safety recall cannot be performed - i.e. replacing recalled struts in a vehicle whose frame is rotted out nothing with no mounting point).

RJ, I recently came across a frame just like that one, in the white colorway. Unfortunately the paint job was too far gone (lots of DIY jobs) so I sacrificed the decals and repainted it. When I bought it for $50, it was set up as a 700c fixie. Having started rebuilding it, I find that 700c wheels have clearance for days, but they don’t fit the cantilever mounts without adapters. My intention had been a drop bar bike with 700cx38 tires, but I slapped some 26”x2.125 wheels in there yesterday and they fit like a glove. Now I’m torn about the bars and the rest of the build. What’s your professional opinion here?
@Happy_Biker Жыл бұрын
I doubt that fork was stock for the Bianchi. You could try some rigid fork options, and maybe the crowns were cracking because of the bottoming out you mentioned, and perhaps it just needs a better spring or other rebuild. Good luck, great story and now you have a new free fork for another frame.

You can have a set lowered I am sure, or figure it out yourself. But yea, when rock shox suspension forks came out, (revolutionizing the Mt. Bike industry in 87 I believe.), they started at 2" travel. As you put your weight on the bike, you do want the suspension to sag some to, so it will react to holes too. Safety recalls do not expire, because they're a matter of safety (to the consumer) and liability (to the company). Shimano has a recall from 1997 (for the FC-CT90, FC-M290, and FC-MC12 cranks) that they still honor, for example. The only thing here that surprises me is that they allowed you to keep the dangerous item. They should have required you to send them either the fork or proof of its destruction.

I also installed a 3mm spacer behind my freewheel and as I began tightening the freewheel back up. I noticed a non stop. Which means stripping danger. And I'm glad I stopped tightening up my freewheel. Because when I unscrewed it and checked the threads on my wheel the first one or two threads were coming out. Mag wheels are expensive. So I had to scrap that idea. When I inspected the freewheel itself. I noticed it's threads in the furthest back do not go all the way to the back. It's like a 1.5mm gap. Probably a design to prevent exactly what happened when I installed that 3mm spacer. To keep the threads from being stripped out when tightened under extreme torque. Not that I did that in the first place being that the freewheel is self tightening. Just a heads up folks. Don't risk stripping out your freewheel threads on your wheels.

Hey bud, do you have like a tutorial of fixing chain rub in the front derailleur in the 3rd gear largest cog. I did everything to fix it setting the limiting screw and adjust the cable but still no fix :(
@waynehendry9782 Жыл бұрын
I had similar problems with the front 3 sprockets which turned out to be the bottom bearing bolt that needed tightening pulling in the peddle sprocket just enough it stopped rubbing. On the small front to small back sporkets or large front to large back it can rub because of the chain angle. Rubbing can be unavoidable. That's not really the gears you should be using or would use so switch to a more centred chain gear. Also pull gear cable out and check it. Might be jamming so not moving all the way. Side note Because I'm mostly road riding I switched front sprockets from 3 to 2 with a larger 40 tooth and 48 tooth using the original 3 chan gear and front derailleur.

Nit: even if the fork travel is roughly 4 inches more, it should settle at least an inch when sitting on the bike - thus resulting in around 3 inches taller. The longer fork likely will work better downhill or flat ground. But depending on the original geometry from the '90s, this might not work for climbing. I had to replace a 60mm with 100mm travel fork on a early Trek 9900 carbon frame and it worked well - despite shifting the rider weight more over the rear tire and thus reducing weight on the front tire while climbing (more likely to "wheelie" then). But the pitch at which it would "wheelie" was steep enough that I was better off walking. :)
