There should be a little metal cap on top of the spring. It's rather annoying to assemble because it gets pushed trough the cage with ball bearings. I believe later Sram T3 models had a "cap" integrated in to the cone. A wonderful improvement if you ask me :)

Yes, this one didn’t have a cap, and I’ve seen this on a couple of these older units now. Not sure if some came from factory like that or just bad luck from previous services.

@@RoryMacdonald-pfff Mine (from 2004) didn't have a cap; it was the 1st service. No noticeable wear after 18 years! A 22mm cone spanner makes everything much easier 🙂 Thank you for the video, BTW.

As the hub is poorly sealed, I can't help thinking it's better to use plenty of semi-fluid grease ( Sturmey Archer). Yes it will collect some dirt, but better to have to service it again ( SRAM recommend every two years)......that the internals rusting.

I had no retaining cap for the thin spring too.

At minute 7.43 the washer that was seen at the top left (small washer) simply stops being seen, it is precisely that washer that I don't know where it goes, and I am trying to assemble the equipment, where does that washer go?
@RoryMacdonald-pfff7 ай бұрын
That thrust washer goes into the lower body of the planet carrier, *before* the planet gears go back in. If you stop the video at 11m09s you can make out the washer in its installed location. I realised my mistake straight away, but my recording of correcting the error didn’t work out.

Maybe a better view of the installed washer at 8:04 … go back to 5:30, the washer simply goes into that lower chamber before putting the planet gears in.

... found the video helpful Rory as I'm doing the same job, thanks. is it possible to put in a link to the German company that supplied the bearings?

Hi Charles - I bought mine from www.retrobikefranken.de/ - but I had also found them in stock at www.daszweirad.de and hollandbikeshop.com/ Good luck with the service!

A thrust washer disappears from the left of the frame just after 7:50. Where did it go?
@RoryMacdonald-pfff3 жыл бұрын
Ah, excellent spot - and a bad edit on my part. It goes into the lower body of the planet carrier before the planet gears go back in. I forgot to insert this during the 1st pass and then went back but hadn’t recorded that. You can kind of make out the washer at 8:03
