Seeker Question: Dearest beloved Sri Bhagavan, is mind a part of pure consciousness? Is the mind aware of itself? Does it have consciousness of its own? Thank you Bhagavan.
Sri Bhagavan: The mind is like a computer. It runs on programs. It may look as though it has consciousness, but it does not have. You identify yourself with the mind. Therefore, it looks as though the mind has consciousness.
You are not your body. You are not your mind. You are not your thoughts. Then, who are you? You are pure consciousness. You are a witness. And you were neither born, so you would neither die. You are the timeless eternal one. It is not that you are there, somebody else is there. There is only one “I”. Other than this “I”, nothing exsists. This “I” is what we often refer to as the Atman.
Unfortunately, this “I” identify itself with the human body, thoughts, mind, property, wealth, name and fame. Every human endeavor is to discover this “I”. But then we are seeking for this “I” in all the wrong ways. The pursuit of pleasure, the pursuit of wealth, the pursuit of name and fame, is also an effort to discover this “I”.
The problem is, as you are taking birth, there are some problems in the womb and during delivery, there is a deep dissatisfaction while being in the womb and while being delivered. And throughout life, you keep seeking for that satisfaction. You try to overcome that dissatisfaction which started while in the womb and during delivery.
That is why you are never satisfied with your wife, with your husband, with your job, with your property, with your name, fame, everything..No man can ever truly say “I’m satisfied” after achieving something. The very effort to achieve was because of the primary dissatisfaction, and it will always continue to be with you. That's why you make a hundred billions, you want to make another hundred billions. Nothing can satisfy you.
I knew of an Indian lady, an old lady used to come and meet me regularly. She used to say, “Bhagavan, bless me to buy the other piece of land.” I would give her a blessing, she will be back in six months time, saying “Bhagavan, I want to buy the next piece of land.” This lady happens to be a close friend of our guide here. This happened for about nearly half a dozen times. Then I asked her, “Why do you want the next piece of land?” She said, “Bhagavan, I'm only asking for the next piece of land.”
You can never be satisfied. You might have the most beautiful woman on the planet, and you are not satisfied. You may get the best man, and you are not satisfied. You win the Nobel prize, and you are not satisfied. I have met people who probably are the most successful people on the planet, but highly dissatisfied.
Once we set right what happened in the womb, the problem ceases. But then what happens is they also become awakened. As you keep taking the deeksha, the deeksha would set all these things right. It would happen automatically. We have to go into the womb and set things right. Then you discover the primal “I”, or what we call the big-self. Then that you discover that you are God yourself. The journey would ultimately end only when you discover that you are God yourself. Begin the journey.
