Sri Lanka's Last Indigenous People - The Veddas were traditionally forest dwellers, who foraged, hunted and lived in close-knit groups in caves in the dense jungles of Sri Lanka. But most people haven't heard of them.
Despite being Sri Lanka's earliest inhabitants, many people know little to nothing about them. Today Veddas are thought to account for less than 1% of the national population.
Vedda, also spelled Veddah, people of Sri Lanka who were that island’s aboriginal inhabitants prior to the 6th century BCE. They adopted Sinhala and now no longer speak their own language. Ethnically, they are allied to the indigenous jungle peoples of southern India and to early populations in Southeast Asia. They have now been largely absorbed into the modern Sinhalese population; in 1911 they were reported to number about 5,300, by 1964 the government estimated their population at about 800, and by the 1970s they had virtually ceased to exist as a separate community.
The aboriginal material culture and subsistence patterns of the Vedda were extremely simple. They lived in caves and rock shelters, wore bark-cloth clothing, hunted game with bows and arrows, and gathered wild plants and honey. Their religion was essentially a cult of the dead; ancestral spirits were believed to enter the bodies of shamans, through whom they communicated with their descendants.

I am aware of the prices requested from me. I cannot call it "fair" for an ordinary visitor. I greatly respect the community, but they have to understand there is a very tiny line between the authentic experience and the tourist trap. So they must create an environment where tourists recommend it to others and decide to return. Money collected from people like me has to be recorded, registered to make the place better for the community, and shared evenly among the community for their survival. But unfortunately, I have not received any receipt or anything in this case. But I hope the sum requested from me goes to the proper channels. I hope leaders and the tourism board will take necessary actions to ensure the place does not become a tourist trap but a learning experience for the tourists and locals about the treasures of Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan history. Last time he bought essentials for thousands of people with the money he raised, he did not use a penny for his own gain. Same as before, the money has raised now for building a village school. Actually what I think happens here is not Vedda people take advantage of tourists or the prices are too high, but the lack of organization and arrangement of things. The items and prices Ranjith explained was fair and I think it possible to be fair considering 9 items and possibly 5 or more people involved, then it will be divided and it sounds fair after a small calculation. This should not be a show for individual people who comes and asks for a show. This needs to regulated. Price is not a problem. Show has to be standard and accommodate maybe 50 audience. And with a pre booking they can charge 50,000 per show. So the audience can buy 1000/- ticket per head. Fair for everyone. This will solve everything. If individuals come and ask for the show they can give them public show time tables then they can just buy a ticket and enjoy. I don't think the great person "Wannila Aththo" and his beloved son who will possibly be the next prestigious leader are someone who cheats and tries to rob people. The case and the prices seemed fair to me but the arrangement is not correctly organized.

Dear Davud, As a Sri Lankan I feel ashamed after watching this video and would like to apologize you. 😢 They have treated you in a bad way and I feed really sad, because you still showed your kindness to these people, by providing more money. Just to get some idea how much they overcharged you, the average monthly salary of a graduate government teacher is around Rs50,000. But these crazy guys charged you Rs.15,000 for just 5 activities, which didn't take 30 mins of their time for that day. So you can imagine how much they have overcharged you. 😞 Also this is a good example that shows our country's problem is not only with the president or parliament, but also with the people of Sri Lanka including the Vaddha community. In the 1990s, self-identifying Veddas knew few words and phrases in Vedda, but there were individuals who knew the language comprehensively. Later studies indicate that the language spoken by today's Veddas is a creole which evolved from ancient times, when the Veddas came into contact with the early Sinhalese, from whom they increasingly borrowed words and synthetic features, yielding the cumulative effect that Vedda resembles Sinhalese in many particulars, but its grammatical core remains intact

It's a wonderful expedition that you did, showing one of the oldest living communities of the world. Their dancing is similar to those of indigenous people in Australia. You are a good marksman. Mr Oneshot😂, congrats. It's a bit shame that things are bit too much commercialised and they are after money, lost their innocence. Those days when I visited in late 1990s it wasn't like that.
