Rajkummar Rao’s conviction and process manages to break through the banal writing.

Srikanth Movie Review by Sucharita Tyagi - Rajkummar Rao is the lifeblood of this film, there is no doubt. Playing a visual impaired person, a man who has been blind from birth, is a very specific, particular challenge, one Raj spoke about in my interview with him, yahaan par dekho. The dedicated, focused, hard work shows, and there nary is another actor in mainstream hindi cinema who could have done a better job. Given, it IS IMPOSSIBLE to accept him as a 9th standard student in 2006, telling APJ Abdul Kalam he wants to be india’s first blind president, but the staging of the shot and the performance, are both just so earnest, you let it slide. Even when the film WANTS to explore Srikanth’s God complex, when we see that “main kuch bhi kar sakta hoon” has taken on a new, more conceited meaning in Srikanth’s life, the writing and direction are unsure how to approach this behavioral change, just sort of dumping it in the middle. However, Raj’s conviction and process manages to break through the banal writing, and explore a side to the protagonist the film itself doesn’t have enough time for.

There are facts & figures on the screen during closing credits. NOT accessible to an individual with visual impairment enjoying the movie. A cruel irony.

Yeah - a bit filmsy and not as tightly directed as say 12th fail (which is gold standard) but still worth watching due to Rajkumar’s, Jyotika’s and even Sharad’s acting

Sparsh with Shabana and Naseer was among the most empowering, original, and sensitive portrayal of visual disability. Tik tok wala writers cannot even hope to reach those heights, only diss those actors for their religion.

Very well put!- that gem of a movie, with the scale of a normal life of...a visually challenged person, struggling more with society's patronizing rather than empathy, has not had an equal tale on the screen yet.

Seriously it's good you are reviewing such underrated gems but why are you limiting to hindi or bollywood? I mean when the best movies in the country are coming from other industries why are you restricting to bollywood which is somewhat in mediocre form in years (except for just a few gems)? Is that a language barrier? When the whole country is raving about how malayalam films are on a roll and yet here you are following heeramandi and such. It's ofcourse personal but at least it would be better if you change your bio to bollywood critic so others are not misguided. 😊

I watched it today. What a performance by Raj Kumar Rao! Ek bhi scene me aisa nahi laga ki wo blind nahi hai.Entertainment nahi hai par agar character acting dekhni hai to 👌

Hi Sucharita! Big fan here, but, I’ve got a quick question I’ve often seen you (very justifiably) critique 4th wall breaking voice overs because they’re not organic (and may even be called lazy) Is there a film where the 4th wall breaking dialogue has been done effectively or do you personally feel like it’s a trope that isn’t effective to begin with ?

I love how you put into words exactly how I feel watching a movie when I am not able to express all of it. The manipulation working even as we know it's a trick is exactly how I felt. I also felt like the second half was long drawn out and there were multiple times I thought the film had reached its conclusion.

Maybe it’s me being a bickering Debbie Downer but representation of disabled people in cinema…uffff that’s a looong discussion. Also, age gap discourse mostly because the chemistry felt non-existent and also the character of a female partner in a biopic? Hehehehe the less said the better.

Movie is good.. but in reality the person on whose movie is based on a Telugu speaking person from Andhra Pradesh.. If atleast in the movie should have shown some linguistic culture which is specific to Andhra Pradesh as far as we know Mr Srikanth can only speak Telugu and English but here in movie he speaks Hindi and English.. so if you had mentioned this in your review it had been better.. As we generally see this type of conversation is not happening so far average movie watcher he is a hindi guy.. No hate to Hindi speakers ❤❤❤❤

Why did she make a sarcastic comment on "us Indian folks" not coming forward to help each other? How many countries' (esp. of a large size) folks do you feel are really helpful towards each other which makes this a uniquely Indian issue?
