Picked up a nice little GL500I Silverwing last year with 19k miles replaced the stator & R/R new windscreen upgraded to LED lights and it runs and rides perfect. Total investment less than 2400 and I’ve got a great very reliable bike that I enjoy more than any bike I’ve ever owned.

Love the silverwing. I put 160, 000 km. on a 1979 GL500, had 0 problems with regular services. A great little bike, handled 160 kmh easily.

I've had about a dozen Silverwings over the years. The last one I sold was a GL650I that I bought with 11,000 miles and sold it with 106,000 miles on the clock. IMHO it's the best bike Honda ever made. I'd still be riding it but for the parts scarcity. I do a lot of long road trips and the last thing I need is to have a unique part fail in No Hope ND. It would cost more than the bike is worth to retrieve it. I've switched to the closest thing I could find to the Silverwing. Moto Guzzi. Transverse V twin, shaft drive, 5 speed transmission, and detachable bags. One word of advise. If you get it up to 35,000 - 40,000 miles, I'd look very seriously at a new cam chain. They're not available from Honda, but you can get them aftermarket.

This is pretty well an exact match for my wife’s first motorcycle. We didn’t load it up with all the chrome, but had the full Type 2 radio, with CB, so she could talk to us on our Gold Wing Aspencades, one really cool feature is that from the factory, the seat was in two pieces, and if you wanted too, you could remove the back half and then move the trunk up in its place. This created both a backrest and brought the weight closer to the center of the bike. As a solo rider of Gold Wings since 1975, I always thought that Honda had a great opportunity to do the same thing to the Wing. It would shed weight and give the rider a great backrest. In her first year she rode it from Calgary to San Diego and back in our two week vacation window. Shaft drive, water cooled, it was a great light weight touring bike.

Yes, but the back seat is excellent for a large backpack to be bungied on, and that provides a more adjustable backrest :-) There are numerous attachment points for bungies, so the bike can carry a formidable load (e.g. a week's groceries from the supermarket).

Seems like a common obsession... To me, the regular bike is really beautiful, saddens me to see all the Interstate goodness removed. As a student, I had a 1956 Triumph Tiger 100 with rack and saddle bags... so I'm forever attracted to bikes with a balanced look including a functional rear end.

I had one just like this for eight years, though it has been fancied up a bit, especially with all the tubing and chromework in the rear end (the mufflers are not original). It is a fantastic "light" touring bike, don't let the 500cc fool you, it has all the power needed to take on semis on the freeway. The 1983 650cc version is even better (I have one now). Oh, that radio case is a pain to open, hence the value of the remote on this bike ;-)

I bought a CX500 that color with about 28,000 miles in 1993 for $375. Inside of the first 7 days the water pump impeller spun on the stripped spline. That is the coolant pump shaft spun stripping the corresponding hole in the center of the impeller. Cost me the engine the first week I had it. $375.00, exactly what I'd paid for the bike got me an engine from a cycle salvage and I swapped engines over a weekend. Good bike after that. In fact I don't recall a single issue over the next 3 year's I owned it. Not sure about the 'Wing variant but my CX500 was essentially 1 to 1 in 5th gear. Which means the speedo and tach were simpatico in 5th so travel on the interstate did not find the engine knocking back the miles at a somewhat less than a relaxed gait.

That's a lovely bike, their can't be many left now. The CX 500 engine's a reliable motor but attention must be given to the cam chain at the first sign of noise as continued wear will see it wearing away the portion of the main oil gallery on the rear crankcase casting.

At about how many miles do you think this problem might occur?
@johndoogan3712
@johndoogan3712 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, this tends to occur at high mileages. I wouldn't have expected this issue to occur on this bike yet. A workshop I once worked at mainly worked on courier bikes in the 1980's/1990's. These bikes certainly clocked up very high mirages with couriers clocking up mileages in excess of 1,000 miles per week with the resulting maintenance scadule condensed into a short timescale. Some of these bikes easily clocked up 80 to 100,000 miles during their service lives. We told their owners to have their cam chains replaced at the first signs of noise.
