In 1972, I went to get a new Harley. I was single, in the service, just returned from overseas with a lot of cash, no worries. Went to the dealer in Pensacola, Florida. The only bikes on the floor were used. He had a couple new ones but they already belonged to some one and were awaiting them to pick them up. I was told that at that time, the waiting list was almost a year. Meanwhile you would have to go ahead and pay for it in advance or start financing it. I would be paying for it for a year or more before I got the bike and it would already be a year old. So I went and bought a used bike. A 72 original sportster. Had that bike for years and rode it all over the country. Today I have a 2003 sporty and my Kawasaki vulcan 1500. I have an old Yamaha 650 for a project bike. I think it is an 83. And I have a 82 Honda GL500 I am rebuilding for a friend. My riding partner has a 2018 Victory Gunner. What a beast. Thanks for the video. I am looking for a mid 2000's 1100 to 1300cc area. I like the Yamahas , Hondas and Kawasakis. Love the words of wisdom. God bless ya'll

I went to order a 2000 Fatboy brand new. The MSRP was $16,700. The dealer had several lined up for $23,000 and up. I told him I would be fine with waiting 9 months for one. He refused to order me the bike. He said I just didn’t want it bad enough! I couldn’t believe that a Harley dealer wouldn’t let me order a new bike. I still go visit that dealer to test ride bikes I’m interested in. Then I go on Craigslist and buy the same type of bike for $5,000 less.

I had an 06 Fat Boy. It was a great bike and my only complaint would be the same complaint I had with any pre 2007 HD, it needs a taller top gear for interstate cruising. The speed limit in Idaho and Montana where I ride is 80, so the RPMs were just too high. I don't like working the motor that hard.

I remember when you had to place deposit and wait 18 months for a new HD. They were never meant to be an impulse purchase. I give HD 12 months to restructure or go bankrupt. I went to HD of San Francisco and Fulsom HD recently and they were both void of customers. The local stealership closed down in January where I live in Northern California after 30 years.

It's a shame because they're making better bikes than they ever have. They are actually liquid cooled. Air cooling in this millennium was just unacceptable to me. Especially considering the Japanese were doing it it the 70s and the price of a HD.

while it's true that there was a time when Harley couldn't keep up with demand, and used Harley's would often sell for more than a new one, 2003 was not the "pivotal moment" when that changed. This is a situation that started building in the late 80's after the introduction of the Evo Big Twin in 84, and the Evo Sportster in 86. This situation reached it's peak around 1990-91 right around the time the Fat Boy was introduced and then co-starred with Arnold in T2. After that everyone wanted a Black Fat Boy. As Harley realized that the demand was going to continue, they invested in expanding manufacturing capacity, eventually acquiring an old Briggs & Stratton plant in Kansas City. In 1991 I bought my first Harley, a 91 Sportster. There was a six month wait on a Sportster, but I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time and was able to buy it when the guy who ordered it backed out if the deal because he didn't like the paint. In 95 I traded it in on a Dyna Super Glide that I waited six months for. I worked for a Harley dealer in 1997-98, and even by then the situation was starting to turn around to a point that unless you were ordering a special color or an anniversary model you didn't have a long wait, and as often as not bikes were on the showroom floor ready to buy. Resale values were still up and when circumstances forced me to sell my Dyna, I got close to the price of a new one, but nowhere new to what I had in it. It was a lot closer to 2000 when the tide had turned and Harley was making enough bikes to meet the demand. The reason you see so many anniversary badged 100th anniversary models is because every last 2003 wore anniversary badging, where previous anniversary models were limited to 1,993, or 1,998 units for the calendar year of the anniversary. Harley did this because many dealers had been taking deposits for the 100th anniversary models since the 95th anniversary.
@flat6fever680
@flat6fever680 6 ай бұрын
Makes sense on the amount of them. All being badged anniversary that year. I too thought by 2000 the tide had shifted and the whole used bike being more expensive than a new bike trend was a thing of the past. Now, currently, they are a dime a dozen. I just bought a mint condition blue 100th Ann Dyna Super Glide for $3,500. Really hard to believe what I paid for a used Softail in 1995 or 96 but it was 14k and I think it may have been a 1989 or something. It was a softail custom. 99% of the motorcycles I see on the road today are Harley's (Central PA) but my have the prices come down, at least on used ones.

You're ageing yourself man. Back in 88 or 89 my Dad took delivery of his new 883 Hugger. He gave just price which was around 4700. Fast forward into the 90s, hes on a waiting list to take a bigger bike from his dealer. Mind you back then most dealers put you on a waiting list at retail or you had dealers with no wait lists, but they charged 1500 to 3000 over retail. My Dad takes Delivery of his 97 Electraglide at retail around 17000. He puts his bike up for sale on consignment and the dealer sold his sportster for 6400, the dealer kept 500 and my Dad got 5900 for a 8 year old bike that he gave around 4700 for. 2 years later we're in a shop that doesn't do wait lists and they have a Sportster Sport on the floor. Campbells HD, 1999 Xl1200s in Scarlet Red. Bike listed for around 8495, they're price was 11500. Now this shop would load all their bikes up with 1500 worth of accessories on it and charge another 1500 for the "labor" to justify the pricing. I wanted that bike but I didn't want those accessories. I had the money to buy, even knowing that I was paying a premium over it, and I still sat and talked with the sales guy. He wrote down all the accessories I wanted, he went to the woman that owned the shop and she came back and said no. I wanted to dress the bike up or get a different bike and dress it up with all the performance Screaming Eagle parts and she said no. Sad thing was just about 7 or 8 years before that very shop had been owned by husband and wife and the husband had ran the shop as a waiting list retail shop. The owner was a nice guy, him and his wife divorced, she got the shop and she was a real old Cunt. She later sold the shop to some Used Car salesmen and they've had a lot of success with it. Black Diamond HD, they're still douchebags though. I called up Widmans in St Louis and they had a silver one for 9500 and I never looked back.

Actually the Harley supply and demand problem lasted well into 2005. In 03 Harleys were going for as much as 20K over MSRP for some anniversary models. Some dealers wouldn't sell you a new Harley for any price unless you had a Harley to trade in. I did a video about this if you'd like more info. Here's a link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6LMn6SpgJJ_kMU

What's really hurt Harley is people not being able to pull money out of their houses so easily. I think everyone was spending their equity from 1999-2007. I knew so many people who bought 2003 bikes.. a couple guys who bought more than one even.. saying they were "investments". Didn't really work out that way.

The biggest advantage Harley Davidson has is the fact that if needed you can get the bike repaired almost anywhere here in the states. There’s a ton of aftermarket support, OEM parts, accessories etc. Additionally they have the lowest depreciation rate of any production motorcycles. Sean, here is how to get that boot mark off your exhaust pipe.... Get the pipe warm NOT HOT, just warm.... Put some mechanic's hand soap on a cotton rag and rub it in until it is gone. DO NOT USE PUMAS HAND SOAP, PUMAS SCRATCHES!!! Use the mechanic's hand soap that is creamy.... Takes that boot mark right off. It also can be used on that shirt you got oil on or other greasy stuff (pork ribs dripping on your shirt). Rub it on the greasy spot, toss it in the wash and voila, grease spot gone.... BTW, I have a 2003 CVO Road King with Gold Leaf lettering for Harley Davidson.... Stock paint.

As if the overheating problems, crankshaft failures, and cam chain tensioner failures of the Twin Cam (all of which tended to destroy engines) weren't bad enough, the M8 has a lot more in common with the Honda Goldwing engine as far as the sound and feel goes, which means there isn't any. It might as well be electric. The traditional H-D riding experience is completely gone.

The Harley's of today are soooo much improved with there modern machinery. No more oil slobbering. Fuel injection can't be beat out west where altitudes can change 8,000' in a few hours. Soft tail smoother than my Caddie!

Now the market is showing that you can get a used Harley for only a few hundred $$ for an equivalent metric bike...that being said, at the point I’d be happy or even be able to afford a Honda Rebel just to get riding again..but still, the market is definitely a buyers game now!

Harley may have made lot of money these last 2 decades but they've flooded the market and expanded so much they'll be in the same place as Hondas which does very well on the market but honda covers many cycling areas and Harley prior to now was in a safer place and was in a more defined place. Last yr i bought a very nice softail for 4500. 13 yrs ago i paid 12,500 for a softail

Love Floor-Boards. I cheat when it comes to shifting. I shift up with the edge of my shoe-sole. It has also 3/8th of an inch edge, enough to lift the front shift tab. Then to shift down, just tap down. Easy. I never lift my foot off the floor-board.

In 2002 the Harley dealers sales staff asked you where you live, because they carved up the whole US into sales areas, sort of like a club, to prevent capitalism. I hope Indian and Can Am keep getting better and forces them to not be such overpriced underdesigned bikes- they have improved a lot since 2002.

I know your post is a year old and I'm sure you figured out that 6th gear is just an overdrive. 5 speed has longer gears from 2-5 gear. 5th gear at 100 is around 3100 rpm just like a 6 speed. 6 speed has shorter gears so you're shifting more. I figured that taking off (rolling) in 2nd gear will keep up with a smaller motor 5th gear.

I remember the days of the waiting lists for a NEW HD. I knew guys that would order a new HD every year and sell their used bike for a great price. Of course this type of anomoly can never last forever but for sure the assclowns that were running HD at this time were some of the dumbest merfers imaginable. You have a great product and name brand that has reached premium price and cult status and you decide to flood the market with overproduction.

Did they ever pay back that $2.4 billion they borrowed? Could explain why the prices are so bloated, need more money's to pay creditors. I don't think Harley saw the used market as ever being a threat to their new sales. They figured the briefcase bikers were going to last forever.
