Thinking about purchasing a Sportster, but not sure as to iron 1200 or the '48. Which is more comfrontable for someone of 5' 9", 170lbs stature? Driving locally for the most part, but don't want to be restricted. Want to be able to jump on the highway and take a 300 mile road trip.some weekends. Would you choose 1200 iron or '48, or upgrade to a solftail? Why? Also, I'll be ridding solo for the most part, and have only minor issues with gas restrictions. Thank you.

Lol It's usually a good idea for someone making a video to know their facts before speaking, especially when talking about Harleys, because there are a LOT of guys that really know their Harley history. I wonder if he even knows where the peanut tank design came from? Probably not. Or how about the model K and KR? doubt it. Oh well, that's ok, he's a salesman, not a gear head I guess.

I have an 2006 48 H-D Sportster, i bought it because an old Ironhead Sportster was how I got started. When I bought it used from a dealer I only rode it around the block. I thought it looked so cool all low and sleek. I soon learned, why I didn't realize it, that while low looks cool low and with the 18' instead of a 21' front wheel, it also affects handling, curves and cornering specifically. The bike's lean angle wasn't even as good as my Roadking. It's easy to throw foot peg sparks. i ride a lot but I don't consider myself a very aggressive rider. I put some apehanger, on it, I'm going to keep it, its a fun town bike, but that 2 gl tank only lets me ride 70 miles down the highway before the reserve lite comes on. The Evo sportster motor is a reliable motor. Thats my 2 cents.

It’s okay for you in the USA to have a bunch of bikes, but here in the land of Oz (Australia) Harleys cost more than twice what they do over there, so owning two takes a lot of cash and that’s just the purchase price. Registration here in Victoria runs at about $800 per year per bike and insuring it will set you back another $800-$1000 easy. So count your blessings that you live in the USA where bikes and gas are so much cheaper than here. (Gas costs about $5.45 per US gallon where I live) I have a ‘97 Sporty that I have ridden to Queensland and back a few times, which is about 2100 miles there and back.

@Cris and Steven, I do not worry about what people have to say. You two are funny. Really though. HDs are completely overpriced. They come factory feeling like crap and you spend money to make them 'better'. Completely changing the bike that you already paid a ransom for to ride off the dealership lot. For the most part you are paying for an engine that has been proven to run tip top for many moons. I am still enjoying my Forty-eight. Just get out and ride. I don't mind being slow, it is easier to take in the sights. I just sound fast. Ha.

Sportster are your fun around town to work bikes. Their made for short distances with no frills. Alot of bikes aren't made for long distances. The one's that are can be to big. Also the most you might get is about 200miles maybe probably 175 with the wieght of the bigger bike and fuel. But the greay thing about Harley's is you can make them your own. you can get a 3 gallon tank for any sportster along with diffrent bars seats pipes. Theirs no end to what it can become.

A 2.8 gallon tank! 92 Honda Shadow 1100. Worst tank, 47 mpg, best was 52 mpg. In 92, my dad bought a 92 shadow 1100 from the salvage yard on the day it showed up. Swapped the forks and bar, had it painted, and I was a few years away from my teens back then... but in 93 we rode it from fresno, ca to cody, wy. Good times.

Great bike .. after riding an M8, as nice and refined as it is, the 48 feels raw like HDs of the past ...which is a good thing. I had a 73 xlch! I rode it until 1990 and sold it for almost as much as I give for it! I learned one major thing from this bike, never buy a Harley without a electric starter on it! My leg still bothers me today from kicking on that thing! I extended the front end like 6 inches over and it kept bending my kick stand from kicking it! So we finally built a kick stand from a piece of 11/8 inch steel rod and that stopped the bending the kick stand problem! All and all it was a good bike and I had lots of fun riding it! I bought a 1991 Suzuki Intruder in candy apple red and chrome after I sold my Sporty and that was the prettiest bike,it was just beautiful and it would fly,I got it up to 140 one time!

@@harleyvulcancobra4.619 I have a 21" wheel on the front and my bike leans way the hell over. One of the first modifications I did to it was install an electric starter and to install an S&S Super E. Both have been a God Send for making the bike reliable. I should look at making a customer kickstand as I do tend to go through many because the 500-600 LBS leaning the bike way over like that tends to break a lot of them.

@@joelglanton6531 Friend, my 2 cents: forget HD as an everyday/beginner bike brand. Really learn how to ride on proper 'standard' bike, that you can use everyday that will be competent, comfortable, reliable, and fuel efficient...a good used, Suzuki SV 650 would be my best recommendation. A good used SV 650 is inexpensive, GREAT for really experiencing a great handling, manageable bike, one that can be reliably used for commuting, and with great economical running costs. Lots of aftermarket upgrades available as well to 'make it your own'. And a FANTASTIC and great sounding V-Twin engine. Once you get used to a 'proper motorcycle', you may not ever want to consider a 'parade' bike cruiser style motorcycle. Again, my 2 cents. Good luck friend.

Had a aniversary edition 1200 sportster that I loved and someone want to give me more money than I paid for it….so I let it go and had this model in my sights when he gave me cash for the old one. In fact, I saved 1k on it as he needed to sell(sucks when that happens for sure.) I’ve been on the 2010 model now for two years and although I’m putting gas in it seems every other day(I’m not) I still am impressed with the fuel injection 1200 and it caught me off guard one of the first few times I got onto it and the back tire broke loose a bit just into second. I swear I’m not lying and it happened. It’s all balls on the low end( a friend said who knows more than I) plus still plenty of power to cruise the highway confidently, love the wide front tire, the ride is smooth and it’s a no BS,overloaded with chrome that takes hours to clean, took the windshield off mine the guy had on it(looked stupid) removed the baffles from the Vance and Hines short shots(I dunno the model, they are short and turn sharp towards the ground) for the Karen in the neighborhood who tried to tell it’s too loud. Solo seat was a aftermarket and added an LED headlamp. I love it. Not sure if I get 100 per tank but it’s still better MPG than the wife’s car. (When I t rains, I’m jealous of her) but this is the sportster that HD should’ve been making years ago.
