2 things; former asphalt drum plant operator. Slag is used in some blends, normally 14mm slag for extra grip. Roundabouts for example, with a rubber/asphalt mix. As for the base underneath, i can only assume but it was probably based on availability. 2nd thing, a bloke we worked with was trying to tip off a little bit via the grain chute like that. I think it was a ten wheeler 🇦🇺 (T23 config, twin-steer & 3 axles). The load was stuck and the driver attacked the load through the chute. It came loose, smashed the back gate open and dumped the load of 180c hotmix, burying him up to his tummy.That's induced coma shit right there. Please only do that method on small jobs, only that single axle truck, nothing bigger...and add a second control for the back gate like an extra chain, pins or both. Make sure it cant open, that shit will put you in hospital proper.

Base coat like used on town streets is best mix for driveways. Friction coat is the top layer used on state and federal highways where high speeds and high traffic because it is cource which helps displace rain and offers better traction. Not used on city streets because speeds are lower. Base coat material can turn out as flat and smooth as tile and being as tight as it is will last much longer on drives. Always check with plant too see what mix they are running before loading. Just saying.

"Slag" is also called "manufactured stone" or "man-made stone". It's a byproduct of some smelting or refining processes. I used to haul waste dust from a steel recycler foundry to a lead/zinc recovery facility. The leftovers from extracting the lead & zinc was relatively fine & called sand instead of slag, but particle size is the only significant difference.

I would suggest to anyone to try to restore your asphalt driveway yourself before replacing it. In my neighborhood, it’s about $10,000 to rip out and reinstall. And based on other projects, I found the most contractors on big jobs don’t perform the entire quote, or the workers cut corners without you seeing it. Restoring your driveway, unlike your roof which can be dangerous, isn’t dangerous and can be redone until you get it right. Also, the new driveway, will also fail early if the issues causing it to fail are not fixed. So why not try to restore it yourself. Basically, repair all the cracks. I recommend Mike Haduck’s video on this, who did this in a mobile home driveway in Florida. Big potholes require stones and this is also DIY. Everybody is “wowed” by a dark, black color and no cracks, and you can do it yourself. It’s not a weekend job, and requires 55d weather, no rain, and like drywalling, multiple steps that contractors don’t want to do. They want to roll up, rip something apart, lay in new stuff, get paid and leave. So, repair the cracks and potholes. You can’t cause more damage, but there are steps to do, and materials suppliers swear it will be permanent if done right. Mike Haduck’s approach is excellent or cracks and alligator surfaces, but potholes require filling and multiple tamping of 2” fills that are tamped to 1” layers. The dark,black color comes from asphalt sealant that fills the valleys of stones and the tops of the stone mix, covering up the gray stone edges. Over time, UV will break down the sealant and rain will wash it away, exposing the stones gray edges. So, crack filling protects the driveway from water seepage that loosen the driveway, and sealing is the sacrificial layer that weather will wash away, like car wax on paint meant to wear out and reapplied. Except apply the 10-year asphalt that cost 25% more than 5-year but lasts 50-100% longer.

It's more of a watershed than a high weight capacity/traffic surface. So it fares better with higher gravel/tar ratio than a highway or even a parking lot would.

@readysetsleep Жыл бұрын
It looks more like a shared driveway originally. The fence probably went up because one homeowner was most likely using up more of the driveway. You can politely talk to your neighbor, and they won't listen. Until you end up being proactive delineation of the property line and they start moaning.

Depends on local codes, weight capacity & bedding surface. Concrete is more load bearing, & asphalt is more of a watershed. That's one reason they did so much compaction work on the bedding.

If the bastard bites n kicks at least the saws going over him and falling behind him.
