Not only the music but especially the IMAGES of the boxes, reels, even the ubiquitous old yellow "tails out" tags that flew everywhere around the control room.... great memories of a great format that largely departed the commercial broadcast scene way too soon. :-)

I digitized these in 2001 using a 400 MHz Pentium PC and burned to CD. At that time, that PC could only digitize one song at a time instead of today digitizing the whole tape directly to MP3. One of the 3 tapes (I believe 3262) had a few songs recorded over by a 1/4 track machine. I was able to play what was not erased backwards on a 1/4 track deck. Then use the Windows Pocket Recorder to reverse it back to normal. Thanks for the good comments.

In 2001 the PC I had could only make WAV files and there wasn't enough RAM to record the entire tape. So I made a WAV file for each song. Not only are there no pauses between selections but I did not record the cue tones and head alignment tone. Today I could re-record the whole tape but the 2001 WAV files convey the songs. I remember mention of giving enough pause between some selections to savor the song. Thanks for pointing it out.
@70sleftover2 жыл бұрын
That Jim Schulke must've been doing something right in his obsession with detail and selections of songs, because my father much preferred WWSH (106 FM) in Philadelphia over their bigger local competitor WDVR (101FM). He would say the music on "Wish" was peppier, more lively. As a kid at the time I sure didn't find any of these instrumental stations lively, but now probably mainly for the nostalgia I sure do miss the format on broadcast radio.

@@70sleftover I feel exactly the same way. This music was riding in my mom's station wagon, and sitting outside the principal's office waiting to be chewed out- two frequent activities for me in the seventies and early eighties. Do you also want the alignment tone at the beginning of the tape and any dead time between that tone and the music start? Another possibility is for you to buy the tape(s) provided you have a 10" tape deck. On tape 3262 CA, someone recorded over the first 5 selections with a 1/4 track machine. I was able to recover those first 5 selections by playing the tape backwards with a 1/4 track machine then digitally reverse the recording. I have already sold my 4 Muzak tapes to someone else. Hi Catloverplayer! On KZbin there is a version of "Girl of My Dreams" by Richard Alden (who is really Ronnie Aldrich), but uses the pseudonym Richard Alden when recording for Readers' Digest. That particular cut is on Readers' Digest boxset titled, "Two Hearts in 3/4 Time". That was from 1969. It's not available and Out-of Print. But you can hear it on KZbin under Richard Alden - "Girl of my Dreams". It was also available on Readers' Digest from 1973 on a double record set called "The Shadow of Your Smile".

So much thought went into this presentation the songs seem to flow into one another. Beautiful music programmers were as much mixologists as club DJs were. It’s such a shame the format ended up with a reputation as the lowest of the low when it came to radio entertainment. I agree it sounds like Ronnie Aldridge, whose '60s era music I got to know from working in the 1990s at a store that had a CD version of That Aldridge Feeling on their high-tech (to me at the time) multi-CD player. (I guess the CD player was our store owner's cheap answer to Muzak and similar services.) I preferred that CD to the other four or so in the rotation, as a lot were the really hip (at the time) late '80s-90s sort of jazz guitar stuff.
