For a more objective comparison of casting distance performance why not take them to the "casting field" as you've done before? You could also incorporate accuracy tests by casting at or to targets on the ground .

You should try casting lures under 2 grams, then you will definitely feel the advantage of the SS AIR. I can cast 1.5 gram lure with my Daiwa Steez CT SV TW with some technical adjustment but when I cast the same light lure with SS AIR, the difference is quite obvious. SS Air can cast light lures much easier. Steez CT SV TW is still a better reel over all but I still love the SS AIr very much that I also ended up buying two of them. Worth the money!

I found that with my higher end baitcaster ( + $500 ) my distances improved greatly when I matched it to a rod with a 1st eyelet that matched the height of the line where it comes off the level wind. Also I know a few people who can cast it twice as far as I can. So it truly is the Indian and not the arrow sometimes? Good rundown. Thanks!

Still prefer my Alphas Air Stream Custom any day... May cast shorter, but it's accurate and doesn't fluff up. Love it's flat trajectory too.

Different tools for different uses. SS Air is a skipping and pitching machine. If you watch Daiwa's videos for this reel they pair it up to a more traditional JDM bass bait finesse rod, MH power back with a very light solid tip, used for ambushing bass near heavy cover with soft plastics.

If you increase the spool brake, you will be able to reduce the casting/magnetic brake and get lon ger casts. The casting brake has relatively more impact on distance than the spool brake. Much due to line rising...

I have the Corzzas, SpeedStyle, Volkey, MSX, MSX Limited and they are all pretty similiar. They all look great, cast great, but for sensitivity I find them average.

MajorCraft isn't exactly top end JDM rod manufacturer. They have a pretty good design dept though.

@THEREELTEST that's pretty much my experience with MC rods but.... you take what you can get. Interesting that you have a speedstyle and an MSX I.e the higher end of MCs range. Might take a punt on the AG venom for my sub 2g work and keep my eyes open for a maybe a megabass option for 3>15g.

This is how most right-handed people fish with baitcasters, at least in the United States. Most baitcasters have the handle on the right side, so folks will cast with their right hand, then move the rod into the left hand to retrieve. What's funny is that a given person will reel right-handed for baitcasters and left-handed for spinning combos. I find that I prefer holding the rod with my right hand regardless of whether it's a spinning or casting rod, so all of my baitcasters have the handle on the left side. I suspect most right-handers would prefer this as well, but many people have fished a certain way for decades and are used to doing it that way.

when you are right hand dominant you want to cast as well as crank with the dominant hand

@@THEREELTEST I don't! I really lack precise rod control when holding the rod with my left. Cranking left handed doesn't feel too bad to me. Maybe for really big ocean-fishing gear I'd have a preference for right-handed cranking, but then the rod would need to be mounted on something.

@@WarEagleTheBest the advantage lies in the ease to cast. it casts really easily and well, very suitable for someone beginning to pick up baitcasting or someone looking to throw ultra light lures for the first time. if you're a seasoned bfs angler, you will find that the 22 aldebaran gives a slight edge in terms of casting distance. having said that, the gekka is pretty easy and forgivable when it comes to casting as well, if you can find one on sale, its the better choice compared to the ss air.

I can see aftermarket spool for daiwa ss air reaching down to 3 grams. But it is hard to say it will dominate shimano kkr spools now that it sits at 2.4 grams. But shortening the spool shaft now is the next step for bfs as the spool shaft does weigh quite a bit.

For bfs reels, im currently using the shimano Aldebaran 2015 xg limited. Not sure if I should upgrade or not. SS air looks a lot nicer than the alpha air, but I'm not sure if the steep pricing is worth picking over.
