Thanks! I had not known that when the Bremen continued on to New York, that the captain had been ostensibly disobeying orders to deliver his passengers to safety in the US before the whole drama with the Bremen's run for the Axis afterward. My respect for him skyrocketed after learning that.

Great vid. Excellent book "Shadow Voyage" on this. Ironical that Bremen survived all this only to be burned and destroyed by an angry 14yo crew boy just 16 months later.

I strongly suspect that the seaplane catapult had another purpose. Knowing the Germans and their clandestine rearmament program going on even in the 1920s, they fully intended that Bremen could be used as a merchant raider in the event of war, and having a seaplane catapult would give it useful reconnaissance capabilities both for finding targets of opportunity and avoiding warships trying to find it at sea.

Maybe, but back then, when the boat was first created, the Nazis were not in power, and so i really believe that it was a selling point to get more high end customers. If you think aboit it, a busness man who needs to make it to the meeting ASAP will pay good money to get to land a few hours faster. Or if the ocean liner faces distress of some sort and radio comunocations have failed...well you now have a way of callimg for help if you are close enoigh to land. The whole faster postage delivery is also a selling point.

@@maxnikolenko2302 Even before the Nazis took power, the Reichswehr (the military of Weimar Germany) was secretly rearming, and collaborating mostly with the USSR to do it. All the Nazis really did was continue the Weimar-era efforts and then accelerate them in 1935 when they decided to unilaterally abrogate the Treaty of Versailles. Want an example? The Deutschland-class panzerschiffs were designed under the Weimar government, and the first was laid down in 1929, four years before the Nazis took power. That was a ship explicitly designed for commerce raiding, for offensive warfare. All the Nazis did in regards to rearmament was stop pretending to follow the treaty restrictions after a couple of years of continuing the charade, so I guarantee you that the Bremen was made with the possibility of being converted into an auxiliary cruiser in mind.

When I just a little kid I got to go aboard the Bremen’s sister ship Europa after Europa was re named Liberte by the French Line. Europa was awarded to France as a war prize. I think it was about 1959. I would have been 11 years old at the time but I still remember much about it.

I wonder what would happen if the S.S. Bremen wasn't allowed to leave New York city?
@kevinkim271
@kevinkim271 20 сағат бұрын
Bremen and Europa were perhaps nearly identical in silhouette to the untrained eye. NDL gave AG Weser and Blohm & Voss the specifications they required and the shipyards designed it accordingly. They were vastly different when it came to their engineering spaces. NDL intended Bremen and Europa to enter service in tandem. But a devastating fire nearly destroyed Europa during construction and delayed her entry into service. Bremen and Europa also carried the highest average passenger loads in the first half of the 1930s. They were after all the newest superliners in service with direct service to Western Europe. The drop in passengers had more to do with the Great Depression. Take as an example, when Europa departed New York in 1935 at near capacity (close to 1,914). While the brand new Normandie also about the depart for the return maiden voyage only had about 1,491 passengers. Note this would be one of Normandie’s highest passengers loads during her short career. Although it was inflated by returning guests who were invited by CGT for the initial maiden voyage from France.

It would be nice to know why he got that beating. Maybe he was a thief and got caught stealing, or maybe he put other peoples lives in jeopardy. I mean to make a decision to set ablaze an oxeanliner because you were beaten tells you a lot about his personality. Maybe he was a habitual troublemaker. Instead of getting backcat the guy who beat him, he decided to burn the ship. How does that mind set even happen?

Brother i very much enjoy all your videos. But in the end, this time you said " Be nice to people...unless they are Nazis". The problem with saying this in todays world is that anyone can be easily labeled a Nazi. If someone has a different view point in politics, religion, personal preferences, society seems to think its fine to label antone a Nazi if they do not agree with you on certain issues. And so while I personally believe you meant the original Hitlers Nazis whennyou said to not be nice to them, in todays world people tend to believe everyrjing they hear, and if a certain media labels a politician a NAZI, people blindly believe without doing any reserch. These politicians are people with families that also become targets of that NAZI label. Thank you for your work. I enhoy learning from your videos about many great Big Old Boats Take

@sal-my1id i know, and i realize he meant it as a joke, bit unfortunatly there are too many people who are simple minded and will believe anything they hear, especially if they hear it on the news or from their favorite politician who is a rival of another politician. The term is " Mud Slinging" when politicians say things to make the other one look bad in order to limit the amount of voters voting for the opposition.
