I do think this makes sense. The song here frames their desperate struggle as being against the Soviets, and say what one will about Hitler, the Soviets were absolutely just as fanatical and malicious as the Nazis. It seems to me, then, that the Nazis made a fatal moral step in their opposition against the Soviets, this being the notion that 'Even the Devil -- and all the omnimalevolence symbolized within such a figure -- can be invoked in opposing the enemy that is the Reds.' In short, it is the claim that even the most rotten and vicious component of the human soul can be freely unleashed upon this enemy, such is its evil and pestilence. The result, then, would be the massacres and atrocities the Nazis are rightly known for today. And of course it gets immeasurably worse when this same notion of 'anything goes when facing the enemy' is applied against an enemy that really should not be seen as one to begin with (this being the Jewish civilians, Poles, and many more who perished in the Holocaust for the simple matter of being 'impure' by the Nazi standard). Even more ironically, this selfsame idea was baked into the ideologies of the communists against whom the Nazis marched; the Maoists just a few years after the end of the war would go on to commit similarly insane and horrifying atrocities, all under the ethos of "Do what must be done [to bring about the utopian vision of Mao]". An addendum to the "Do what must be done" ethos to ensure we avoid the fanaticism of the Communists and the Fascists, perhaps, would be that "while the limits on 'what you will do in service to a goal' should not be drawn by weakness, they MUST be drawn by decency". Even if it is to oppose the Reds, the Browns, or whomever else, der Teufel is not an appropriate figure to take as an ally.

Many were volunteers, that signed up to fight against the soviets. Many were from Scandinavia, France, Ukraine, etc. Communism was a real threat at that time. Some units were well trained and well equipped and some were not. A group of Swedish volunteers died fighting in the last days of the war in Berlin, attempting a breakthrough. There is a photo of a halftrack marked with the SS Nordland emblem. One thing you have to remember, people did not do it because they loved killing, they did it to protect their countries. And atrocities are committed on all sides in war, especially in the red army and even today. Would you fight or risk your girlfriends and daughters getting raped to death by the red army's advance?
