SS ROTTERDAM 1959 Inside-Arts

Was very fortunate to work aboard this beautiful ship for extended periods in the 1970's and 80's (as well as HAL's Statendam and Prinsendam). During my career at sea I also worked aboard many Cunard line, Sitmar, Ulysses, Black Sea Shipping, Chandris, Costa, Carnival and P&O vessels. I can honestly say, hand on heart, that the Rotterdam was my favourite ship to work and travel upon - It had a timeless down-to-earth elegance, handled all seas with total ease and the Dutch, Indonesian and Phillipine crew were always wonderfully friendly and welcoming to work alongside. I walked past many of these incredible artworks almost daily - and just wish I had taken more time to study and understand them fully. I can remember the First Officer Jacob ? once explaining to me that he and his onboard team of carpenters had quite a job maintaining all of the various exotic woods - literally dozens of them - that were no longer easily sourced - that had been used in virtually every passenger area across all decks. To do this they would dismantle panels of the specific rare woods they required in the least used areas of the ship - and use them to repair/replace damaged woods in the busiest most visible passenger areas - that's why she always looked immaculate throughout her long sea-going career - and in her new home in Rotterdam. I am delighted (and relieved) that they saved this stunning piece of nautical history.

I was on this ship in 1991 and thought it looked like a floating art gallery. I'm so glad this unbelievable ship was not sent to the breakers! The art work alone on the ship is worth 10's of millions of dollars!

The Murals look like Picasso, but everything else about Rotterdam is beautiful. The Salon a Manger, The Grand Salon,. The Fumoir, The Grande Descent, The Grand Lobby, The bars, The Theater, everything about Rotterdam is beautiful.

The Rotterdam is a very beautiful ship. I will paid her a visit when I can actually go to Holland.

Ich war von Mai bis Dezember 2009 an der Restauration dieses Schiffes beteiligt! Es erfüllt mich mit Stolz einige dieser von mir in Stand gesetzten Objekte zu sehen. Zum Beispiel die Pfeifenwand im "Smoking Room"

toll...ich war als Schiffsfreund begeistert von der vollendeten Restauration des Schiffes. Einfach super was solche Arbeiter wie Du geleistet haben, um zukünftigen Generationen die vergangenen Zeiten zu erhalten, und weiter zu geben.
